CIVIL WAR CDV -11TH ILLINOIS INFANTRY KIA SHILOH

Lot # 18 (Sale Order: 79 of 489)

Photograph of Franklin D. Hartman, a Private in Co. A of the Eleventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry, who was killed in action while fighting on the first day of the battle ...moreat Shiloh, April 6, 1862. This image identifies young Hartman on the reverse by a period pencil inscription: "Frank D. Hartman died in Civil War Shiloh 1862 11 Inf. Co. A Enlisted July 30 1861." This CDV is a war time copy shot of a tintype owned by Hartman's family who undoubtedly had CDV copies made of the tintype to share with family and friends. The two cent revenue tax stamp on the reverse indicates that this photograph was made between 1864 and August 1,1866 when the photography stamp tax was repealed. The regiment had been under the command of W.H. L. Wallace, and at Shiloh it fought under Lt. Col. Thomas E.G. Ransom. Just prior to this in February it was heavily engaged at Fort Donelson. Frank Hartman was born ca. 1838-1839 in Union County, Pennsylvania. By 1860 he and his family had moved to Illinois and were living in Stephenson County near the small town of Buckeye, just north of Freeport, Illinois where he enlisted. Most of company A was raised from Stephenson County. He is buried in an apparently unknown grave at the Shiloh National Cemetery. In-house shipping is available. Pickup is Monday, April 29th from 11 am to 3 pm in Carroll, Ohio 43112 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item. Once packed up we will send you an invoice for shipping & handling. CIVIL WAR IDED POCKET BIBLE & HYMNAL 1ST OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY

Lot # 19C (Sale Order: 83 of 489)

Civil War prayer hymnal and pocket bible identified to Private Thomas H. Hiest, Co. A, 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The pocket bible is inscribed, "September 28, 1861 Pre...moresented by the Ladies of Dayton, Ohio to Thomas H. Hiest Co A First Ohio Regiment". The bible is titled on the cover "Cromwell's Soldier's Bible", and was published by the American Tract Society at the beginning of the Civil War. It consisted of 32 pages of short bible passages and was a reprint of the 17th century bible given by British military leader and politician Oliver Cromwell to his soldiers. The Western Reserve Historical Society of Cleveland, Ohio has in its holdings a letter written October 1, 1861 by Alexander Varian, a member of Company D, 1st OVI, in which he states that each member was presented a "Cromwell's Soldier's Bible, a donation from the Ladies of Dayton". The pocket bible is accompanied by "The Soldier's Hymn Book" which was published by the New York Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in 1861. Both books are in very good condition.Thomas H. Hiest was a 27 year old blacksmith from Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio who enlisted in Co. A (Lancaster Guards) of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. CIVIL WAR CDV 71ST OHIO VOLS IDED & PUBLISHED

Lot # 23A (Sale Order: 89 of 489)

Civil War Identified CDV photograph of Lieutenant Thomas T. More, 71st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The CDV is inscribed in light pencil on reverse "Lt. More" and what appear...mores to be "Bradford", perhaps a town. Seated view wearing an officer's frock coat with shoulder straps and holding a kepi. Several small pinholes are at the very top of the cdv. The backmark is that of Hoag and Quick's photographic studio in Cincinnati. This view of More can be found on page 270 of Martin Stewart's 2012 revised edition of "Redemption. The 71st Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War". While a first name is not identified on the image itself, the identification of this image was verified through an examination of the American Civil War Research Database. Of the 8 officers in the Union Army who had the surname More, two never held the rank of Lieutenant, 4 were in regiments that were never in Cincinnati (where the photo was taken) and one was at least a Captain when his regiment would have been near Cincinnati. This leaves only Thomas T. More. He enlisted October 1861 in Co. E of the 71st Ohio as a 2nd Lieutenant and was promoted 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the regiment April 6, 1862, the first day of the battle of Shiloh. He was discharged in August 1862. The 71st Ohio fought at Shiloh and suffered severe casualties at the battle of Nashville. Thomas Trenchard More is buried at Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. In-house shipping is available.
