Japanese Shodhana Cha Tansu Elaborate Tea Cabinet
The cabinet is known as a shodhana (also spelled shodana) cabinet and was made in Japan likely between about 1870 and 1900. These cabinets reflected deep Japanese aesthetics and symbolism, along with the incredible abilities of craftsmen of the time in Japan (the Meiji period, beginning in 1868, marked the end off the Feudal Japan, a period of thousands of years during which clans throughout Japan were at a near constant state of war. During this warring time Japan developed thousands of brilliant craftspeople who melded art, spirituality and war into incredible objects such as swords and armor. But once the Samurai were abolished in the 1860s, these craftspeople went to work on finely constructed decorative pieces for export to the West as swords, armor etc were outlawed).
Such cabinets were used for curios and often for the elaborate tea services and related accoutrements in Japan, with such cabinets also known as cha tansu. Many were also sold to exporters who brought such cabinets to the west. Indeed they are probably most commonly found in England today.
Condition is excellent with just one small area of damage to teh pierce work (pictured). There is also one small wood piece loose from the cabinet and I'm not sure where it is supposed to go. 67" high, 15" deep, 43" wide. Pickup only.
