Extensive documentation. This truck was built on a stock Datsun 620 platforms by Southside Enterprises of Augusta, Ga. Southside Enterprises was owned by Southside Datsun, one of the largest and earliest Datsun dealers in the Southeast. Beginning as an import motorcycle shop in the 1950s, the company grew quickly, becoming Southside Imports in the 1960s, then Southside Datsun in the early 70s. They eventually became Sunbelt Nissan, and the entire business was sold to Bob Richards Automotive Group in 2016, when the last member of the founding family retired. Southside was so committed to Datsuns that they opened their Southside Enterprises operation, which outfitted Datsun trucks as tow trucks, campers and stake bed trucks - with some converted to dually configurations. It is not known how many of custom type trucks they actually sold, but it is thought that they didn't sell many. Based on what we have been told, it is believed that this was the prototype or show truck taken around by Southside Enterprises, and that this is the actual truck in the brochure. Southside also sold a conversion kit, which used a stock Datsun bed, and of which one is known.
This truck is extensively documented. This vehicle was purchased by the current owner in June of 2022 from McDonald's Towing in McArthur, Ohio. The only one of these you can even find on the internet is just one existing photo of this truck when it was owned by McDonald's, with his business lettering on the side. McDonald also owned West Side Motors, which is what is shown on the current title as the last owner. This vehicle was primarily used to advertise McDonald's/West Side Motors, not as an in service tow vehicle. It was not outside during winter months. McDonald's/West Side Motor Sales purchased the vehicle in April 2005 from a gentleman in Clarksville, TN, and that gentleman purchased the vehicle from Matthews Nissan in Clarksville, Tennessee. The current owner talked to a former senior person with that dealership, who told the current owner that the dealership's owner saw the Datsun tow truck at a show and purchased it. The brochures included with the truck were what were on the seat of the truck then. It is believed it was the promotional model toured by Southside Enterprises/Sunbelt. Matthews used the truck to tow cars to the dealership, as evidenced by the slips written and left in vehicles that the dealership was to tow. These slips were found in the glove box of this truck. The notes we have go back to the early 1980s.
The body of this truck is largely good, with some rust visible on the exterior facing sides of the rocker panels. The backs of the rockers are solid. The body looks good otherwise. 95 percent of the two rig is solid as well, but a rust hole can be seen between the truck body and the tow bed. The frame of this truck looks very good, as does all of the metal underneath the truck. The only exception is the floor pans, which were rusted and replaced, and the body mounts, which are rusted. Otherwise very good. Interior is good, although there are age cracks in the dash and a rip in the seat. Tires are clean and look good, but they are older show some signs of dry rotting. Some surface rust is visible inside the tool boxes on each side but they are overall good. Overall this is a very good truck that is in very good condition for its age and make. And you'll never see another like it. Also included with this auction is the original paperwork and brochures from Southside Enterprises.
Cash, wire or cashier's check only. 10 percent buyer's premium. Payment due by cash or cashier's check by June 28 at 5 pm. Once paid for this vehicle is your responsibility and we won't refund for theft or damage. Vehicle must be picked up by July 3....more
