Edgefield Pottersville Jar 1820's

Lot # 15B (Sale Order: 33 of 396)      

Edgefield, South Carolina Pottersville Jar 1810-1820's very beautiful form, with 6 punch marks, crescent moon mark at base, also Old World Style tapering at base as well, and a line of marks going around bottom of jar. One lug handle is missing during firing , very tight hairline on bottom. Also great klin drips on the jar. Important Provenance- Franklin Fenenga 1917-1994 was an anthropologist and archaeologist. Director of museums for Georgia Historical Commission in 1960. Studying and collecting Edgefield and Dave pottery from the 1940's on. Dr. Burrison cites his 1972 article in Pottery Collectors Newsletters #1. This pre dates the work of Cinda Baldwin and Georgeanna scholarly work. This piece was acquired in the late 1950's. Franklin detailed some of the earliest scholarship about Dave.
