ANCIENT - SELEUCID EMPIRE - ANTIOCHUS VII SILVER DRACHMA - 138-124 BC - ANTIOCH MINT - RARE

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 1 of 329)

Measuring about the size of a dime, this coin has a lot going on. The obverse has a high-relief bust of Antiochus VII Euergetes, also known as Antiochus the Pious. He w...moreas the ruler of the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire from the summer of 138 to 129 BC. Antiochus VII was the last Seleucid king of any importance, and after he was killed in battle, the Seleucid realm was confined to Syria. The reverse is very ornate, as well. The coin is in overall near-mint condition and would be a highlight piece of any coin collection, even if one does not collect ancients.

1959 GOLD POKE from COLORADO ROCKIES CENTENNIAL - CONTAINS GOLD FROM BOULDER

Lot # 6 (Sale Order: 6 of 329)

Celebrating the Colorado Centennial, in the summer of 1959 this small pouch of gold was good for 25 cents in trade at participating merchants in Colorado. The unopened p...moreoke contains real gold ore tailings from the Boulder Mill mine near Boulder, Colorado. In 1959, the price of gold was fixed at $35.25 per troy ounce. With this item valued at 25 cents then, that translates to a value of around $12 at today's gold price around $1700 per troy ounce. This is a neat piece of history that is certainly worth more than just the intrinsic gold value. It's likely that very few of these have survived the past 63 years.

1935A $1 HAWAII OVERPRINT SILVER CERTIFICATE

Lot # 11A (Sale Order: 12 of 329)

Printed for use in Hawaii after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, this Series 1935A $1 Silver Certificate has black overprints of "Hawaii" running vertically at the le...moreft and right portions of the face, as well as in large letters across the back. The overprint allowed instant recognition of the notes and enabled quick devaluation in the event of enemy occupation or capture of large quantities of cash. This example appears to be uncirculated with just light soiling from long-term storage. These are very hard to find in this condition !

RARE EXPERIMENTAL 1935A $1 SILVER CERTIFICATE

Lot # 11B (Sale Order: 13 of 329)

During WWII, the U.S. government became concerned about the availability of currency paper. A new type of paper was designed and tested to see if it would be as durable ...moreas standard currency paper. On a single day in 1944, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing printed experimental Series 1935A $1 Silver Certificates on the special test paper – overprinted with a prominent red "S." The test proved inconclusive, and there was never a shortage of currency paper, so no change in paper was made. This is a super-nice example that is close to uncirculated. In fact, it probably is uncirculated but has been handled a few times over the years. There are a couple of tiny stains from contact with a metal object, but the colors are bold and the paper is crisp. These experimental notes don't come up very often, so don't miss this opportunity !
