U.S. Model 1860 Enlisted Cavalry Sword, by C. Roby

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 27 of 599)

U.S. Model 1860 Enlisted Cavalry Sword, 34.5'' bright blade with one wide central fuller and one narrow fuller at the top, maker marked at ricasso ''C. Roby, W. Chelmsford Mass.'', and inspector's markings ''U.S. 1864 A.G.M.'' on reverse. Three-branch brass guard, helmet-shaped brass pommel with stamped ''6 +3 H''; leather-covered grooved wooden grip with single twisted wire wrapping. In nickel-plated steel scabbard with large numbers ''65'' stamped in the drag. Condition is very good, the blade mostly bright, still showing the factory cross hatching just above the ricasso. There are a few light fingerprint type rust stains on the blade, with some scattered light rust near the tip but no edge nicks. The leather blade washer is a replacement. Brass guard and pommel retain much of their fire gilt gold finish, with scattered dark spotting overall. Grip is sound with no cracking to the wood; leather cover has sloughed off most of its shiny outer layer and is mostly a brown buff texture. Wire wrapping is intact and tight. Scabbard shows a light pinprick bubbling of the nickel finish overall with a couple of larger rust spots near the bottom. With the markings on the pommel and scabbard drag, and the nickel-finished scabbard, this was probably used after the war at a military academy or school. Est. $500-$700.

Sharps New Model 1863 Conv. Carbine

Lot # 50 (Sale Order: 50 of 599)

Sharps New Model 1863 Metallic Cartridge Conversion Carbine, #C16265, .50-70 CF cal., 22'' blue barrel, case hardened frame, lever, hammer and sideplate; DFC cartouched walnut stock, with blue steel buttplate. This Carbine shows no indication of originally having a patch box. Condition is fine as converted. Barrel retains approx. 92% lightly thinning blue. Case hardened components are mostly vivid with some silver gray toning, predominantly to the hammer and back portion of lockplate. Screws to left side of frame show mild distortion to slots. Good action, bore is bright but has a 2.5'' patch of erosion at muzzle. Est.: $3,500-$4,500. (Antique)(Joe Poyer collection)
