Antique European Single Shot Flintlock Military Carbine, NVSN, .70 cal., 18.625" round barrel retained by two keys marked with a matted hummingbird-like figure at breech, has dovetailed brass blade front, no rear sight; rounded lockplate with pointed tail is marked with a ram's head-like image under integral pan; brass furniture includes loop trigger guard having a fan-shaped front tang, buttplate, nosecap and single ferrule retaining the captive button-top steel ramrod; fullstock of oil-finished hardwood is marked "EIC/BC/74" at left butt, has raised aprons at either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. early 1800s. Condition is good, the dark iron barrel with scattered moderate pitting, else dark-brown aged metal, and deeply-toned brass. Stock is sound with light-to-medium dings and gouges, and a 1.75" oval wood patch ahead of trigger guard. Lock appears original flintlock with correct parts, touchhole perhaps was welded, drilled and filed. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows heavy black-powder erosion. Antique Belgian Single Shot Flintlock Military Musketoon, NVSN, .70 cal., 31.5" round barrel marked "T C 40" and "NR" at breech behind an "ELG/(star)" Liege proof, has a bayonet stud 1.125" under muzzle; flat lockplate with rounded rear tail is unmarked, has separate brass pan and reinforced cock; iron furniture includes trigger guard having a sling loop at front and two finger-ribs behind, wide buttplate, serpentine sideplate, three spring-retained bands (upper of the double-strap type with brass blade front sight and integral nosecap/thimble retaining the tulip-tip ramrod, middle with sling loop). Stock of oil-finished walnut has raised aprons at either side of lock, a quatrefoil-like mark at right butt, dished cheekpiece, and "T C/(illegible)" at left. Mfg'd ca. early 1800s. Condition is very good being cleaned metal having scattered discoloration; markings are mostly sharp. Stock is sound with light-to-moderate dings, losses along ramrod channel, a 3" tight grain crack forward of frizzen spring and another between top and middle band springs. Lock appears original flintlock with correct parts, touchhole was likely welded, drilled and filed. Action is strong and crisp, smoothbore has overall light black-powder erosion. Est.: $600-$900. Antique British Late India Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket, NVSN, 10 bore cal., 39.5" tapered pin-retained round barrel has ring-turning at breech and a sunken cartouche ahead at left; flat lockplate is marked "(large crown)" over "VR" under the integral pan and "Tower" in a vertical curve behind the reinforced military cock; brass furniture includes large trigger guard with iron sling loop at front, nearly-flat buttplate, rounded serpentine sideplate, nosecap, three thimbles retaining the button-tip steel ramrod; fullstock of oil-finished walnut has raised panels at either side of lock (stock maker's stamp at left), step at mid-point, sling loop at front. Mfg'd ca. first half of 19th Century. Condition is good, the barrel having dark patina over general light to moderate erosion (heavier pitting at breech), balance of the iron being lightly-oxidized gunmetal gray; edges are good, lock markings are clear. Stock is sound and smooth showing relatively minor marks for its great age and military use, the comb and raised molding about the lockplate have been reduced, the rounded sideplate is from an earlier Bess, the front sling loop is later. This musket may have been captured by American troops (or by a British Colonial unit) and subsequently renovated including being bored out for use as a fowler, a common fate on the frontier of the time. Lock appears to be original flintlock, the touchhole was bushed, drilled and smoothed. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows heavy black-powder corrosion. A modern buff leather sling is included. Antique British Colonial Contract Flintlock Infantry Musket, dated 1830, #20, .64 cal., pin-retained 38.5" round barrel is marked with period Birmingham proofs in two places and "20" at breech, has stud-like front sight (likely doubles as a bayonet lug) and cannon-turning at breech; flat lockplate is marked "CTPUK/1830" over a "(cow)" under separate brass pan and "Verrante" vertically on rounded teat area behind the large reinforced cock; brass furniture includes trigger guard with two finger-ribs on long rear tang and iron plug at front tang, buttplate marked with (perhaps Indian, then a British colony) lettering, serpentine sideplate marked "D" and "L81", nosecap and three ferrules retaining the steel button-tip ramrod; fullstock of dark varnished hardwood has sling loop at top ferrule, filled area at belly perhaps for rear loop. Mfg'd ca. 1830. Condition is very good retaining good traces of barrel nickel along stock, else a smooth dark brown. Lock is clean gunmetal gray with sharp markings, brass with light age toning. Unusual Civil War-Era Belgian 3-Band Percussion Infantry Musket, Altered from Flintlock, #997, .69 cal., 35" tapered round barrel is marked "997" at breech with Belgian proofs incl. the black powder view mark, has "winged" blade front sight (likely also acts as a bayonet lug); flat lockplate is marked partially "Ame?" in semi-circle, has unusual mortised filler at top-rear, integral large octagonal breech piece/nipple bolster and large rounded rear "tang"; nickel-plated brass fittings include trigger guard with sling loop at front, curved buttplate, three clamping bands (middle with sling loop) retaining the slotted and grooved steel ramrod, serpentine sideplate with illegible marking, nosecap; fullstock of oil-finished walnut has raised panels at either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. 1820s, altered ca. 1860s. Condition is very good retaining approx.. 50% nickel overall, the balance of the steel being bright (difficult to ascertain, as colors match closely). Stock is sound and smooth with a dark varnish finish showing the expected light-to-moderate marks of age and military use, splintering both sides where ramrod enters stock. Perhaps this gun was mfg'd for American naval use during the Civil War, as indicated by its "AME" lock marking, nickel metal finish and dark stock varnish. Antique French Flintlock Infantry Musket, by Versailles Arsenal, NVSN, .75 cal., 40.5" round barrel without sights has bayonet lug 1" behind muzzle, marked at breech "P.B" and "(scorpion)"; flat lockplate rounded at rear with elongated teat has reinforced cock and separate brass pan, marked "sunken (crest)/MF LE/M Imp/De Versailles"; furniture includes 2-pc. brass trigger guard with finial tang and iron sling loop at front, two finger ridges at rear, iron buttplate, serpentine brass sideplate, three spring-retained bands (brass double-strap upper with integral blade sight and nosecap/ferrule retaining the steel tulip-tip ramrod, unusual iron double-strap middle with sling loop, brass lower); fullstock of oil-finished walnut has illegible 1" roundel with central lead plug at right butt, dished cheekpiece with large carved "P" at left. Mfg'd ca. late 1700s-early 1800s. Condition is very good, the barrel with an added brown finish and heavy pitting at breech obscuring other markings there, lock has light corrosion obscuring much of its lettering, pitting to upper buttplate, brass with a dark age patina. Stock is sound with light dings, shallow scrapes and losses, two thin 2" cracks emanating from rear sideplate. Iron middle band is enigmatic; unsure if original to this gun. Imple./de Versailles" in center with a horseshoe-shaped mark above, has reinforced hammer, separate brass pan; brass furniture includes triggerguard having sling-loop at long rear tang, curved buttplate marked "Le-Capitane-Pays-Sold At/De-L'Empire Italie/Almagne-Espagne-France", two winged lock screw escutcheons, three fluted and sculpted ferrules retaining the steel trumpet-head ramrod; oil-stained walnut fullstock has 8.75" raised cheekrest at left, .5" vacant roundel at right, raised panels either side of lock, step at lower ferrule, steel sling loop middle ferrule. Mfg'd ca. 1826. Condition is near fine retaining what appears to be traces of barrel blue showing scattered light oxidation, silvered case colors, and lightly toned brass. Antique Austrian Flintlock Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine, by Anna Oesterlein of Vienna, #851, .69 cal., 14.5" round barrel marked "Anna Oesterlein" at breech, with block-blade front and raised-notch rear sights; beveled lockplate has a "tree"-like mark behind reinforced cock and "851" ahead, has integral waterproof pan; iron fittings include loop trigger guard with rear finger-grip, flat buttplate, serpentine sideplate made integral with 6.5" saddle bar and ring, front band/nosecap marked "23"; 3/4-length stock of oil-finished hardwood has 7" raised cheekrest at left, button-tip iron ramrod. Mfg'd ca. 1830s-40s. Condition is good, the iron surfaces being bright with scattered light oxidation. Stock is sound and smooth. Edges and markings are sharp, action is very stiff, smoothbore is bright showing occasional moderate erosion. The entire gun is coated in amber-colored varnish, which has alligatored over much of the surface. The lock appears to be in original flintlock configuration, with bushed touchhole and correct parts. Antique Tower P-1856 Single Shot Infantry Rifle, with Unusual Breechloading Cartridge Alteration, #406, .577 CF cal., 30" round barrel marked with a chrysanthemum-like mark at breech, has block-blade front and sliding-leaf rear sights, bayonet lug at right; 3.75" breech marked "406" and what appears to be a Japanese character at top, with hinged "trapdoor" marked "406" with right thumb lever and bolt-like firing pin attached to unique hammer; flat lockplate marked "1868/Tower" ahead of hammer and "(large crown)" behind; mountings consist of brass trigger guard, iron buttplate, nosecap and 2 winged lock screw escutcheons, 2 clamping bands retaining the slotted/grooved ramrod. Oil-finished walnut fullstock has raised panels at each side of lock, step at lower band. Mfg'd ca. 1868. Condition is good having overall brown tone with scattered light discoloration to barrel and bands, silvered-out case colors, moderate patina to brass. Stock is sound with the scattered marks of military use, minor gouges at buttplate and lock, 3.25" crack emanating from rear lock screw. Antique Engraved Single Action English Percussion Pepperbox, by Henry Osborn of Birmingham, NVSN, .38 cal., 3.375" hand-revolved 5-shot fluted barrel group appears to be Damascus steel, has screw-out ramrod that also acts as arbor; frame is marked "H. Osborn" at left, has floral engraving, right-side hammer with sliding safety, bulbous nipple shield, separate loop trigger guard, integral grip tangs and finely-checkered "bag-style" varnished walnut grips having trapdoor at butt for spare nipples. Mfg'd ca. 1830s-1850s. Condition is very good retaining Damascus pattern but no finish to barrels, the balance smooth gunmetal gray. Excellent grips show little use and sharp checkering. Edges, markings and engraving are fine, nipples are sound, action is crisp, smoothbores are clean. Henry Osborn died 1827 and the business was taken over by his brother, Thomas, who apparently retained the "H. Osborn" company name. Est.: $500-$750. (Antique)

Antique Cased British Bar-Hammer Pepperbox Revolving Pistol of High Quality, but Unmarked as to Maker, NVSN, .36 cal., 3" ribbed barrel group has engraved muzzle flourishes and Birmingham proofs at breech; lightly floral-engraved frame is stamped "EVS" at left, has flared round nipple shield, engraved bar-hammer and separate loop trigger guard, integral grip straps with highly detailed deep-relief oval "grotesque mask" buttcap, 2-pc. finely checkered walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1830s. Condition is near excellent retaining bright case colors to barrels, all silver to frame and buttcap, traces on trigger guard. Grips show sharp checkering and virtually no wear. Action is crisp, smoothbores are clean. Case of varnished mahogany has two full-width repaired cracks to lid with a 2" scalloped brass escutcheon, missing front circular key escutcheon, is lined in faded red velveteen and partitioned for the pistol, 2-cavity steel bullet mold, 5.5" wood-handle ramrod, japanned tin of percussion caps (empty) with red "Eley Bros." label and a number of cast lead projectiles, all in very good or better condition. Antique Cased Allen & Thurber Double-Action Bar-Hammer Revolving Pepperbox Pistol, NVSN, .31 cal., 3.375" ribbed 6-shot round barrel group marked "Allen & Thurber Worcester" and "Patented 1837 Cast-Steel" atop 2 ribs and "2" between two nipples; floral-engraved medium-size frame has matching full nipple shield, bar hammer marked "Allen's Patent" at left side, separate loop trigger guard, integral "bag-shaped" gripstraps with what may be an illegible (perhaps dealer or agent) marking at butt, and 2-pc. varnished walnut grips having oval German-silver escutcheons at each side. Mfg'd ca. 1847-65. Condition is very good retaining approx.. 90% thinning smooth barrel brown, muted case colors to hammer, balance of the metal being gunmetal gray. Grips are sound with a few minor marks, a hand-scratched square having the initials "MB" inside, and most original varnish. Sharp edges, markings and engraving. Action is crisp, smoothbores are clean showing light rust oxidation. The bevel-top case of varnished mahogany is lined in faded red velveteen partitioned for the pistol, a two-cavity steel bullet mold, "coffin"-shaped powder flask, 5.375" wood-handled brass ramrod, and an assortment of cast lead projectiles, all in very good or better condition. Case has had nail repairs at two rear corners, a coat of varnish and later brass hinge screws; the velveteen shows age wear and light staining from contents, but is original and intact. Antique British Double-Barrel Large-Bore Percussion Howdah Pistol, NVSN, .58 cal./20 ga., 6" Damascus barrels are marked "Piper Guildford" on full-length top rib with gold band at breech, have platinum blowout plugs on sweeping flash-shields, Birmingham proofs, captive ramrod on central rib below; rounded iron frame has scroll engraving, matching hammers with sliding rear safeties, twin triggers, loop trigger guard, 1-pc. flat-butt checkered walnut grip with raised panels at each side behind lock, German-silver nameplates at wrist and butt, raised molding at butt with engraved silver band. Mfg'd. ca. 1830s-40s. Condition is very good retaining no original blue, good Damascus pattern, being generally smooth gunmetal gray with scattered oxidation. Edges, markings and engraving are very good. Grips show sharp checkering and a couple minor bumps, silver ring at butt molding is broken at right retaining nail. Actions are firm and crisp, nipples are mashed, nose of right hammer has been filed; smoothbores show overall light-to-moderate rust erosion. Antique American Kentucky-Style Percussion Long Rifle, NVSN, .38 cal., pin-retained 40" octagonal barrel has simple buckhorn sights and is unmarked; flat lockplate is marked "Cincinnati" (balance obscured by heavy pitting; perhaps famed Ohio gun dealer Benjamin Kittredge) and engraved with flying waterfowl at rear; brass furniture includes trigger guard with double finger-spurs, crescent buttplate, banner-style sideplate, nosecap and 3 ferrules retaining the hardwood ramrod; fullstock of artificially striped and varnished maple has raised panels either side of lock, step below rear sight. Double set triggers. Mfg'd ca. 1840s, perhaps with blued barrel, case hardened lock, bright brass. Condition is very good retaining approx. 90% later barrel blue applied over occasional nicks and pitting at breech, lock is dark gunmetal color having deep pitting under nipple bolster. (cross) Shoup"; likely British-import flat lockplate is marked "H. Elwell/Warranted" in oval under nipple bolster, has an engraved dog-on-point at rear; brass furniture includes trigger guard having long finger-rest rear tang, large patchbox having simple engraving and round open work "serpent-head" finial, crescent buttplate with long bottom tang and faceted top, sideplate, nosecap and 3 ferrules retaining the hardwood ramrod; varnished artificially-striped maple fullstock has curved "Roman-nose" profile with raised cheek piece at left and panels at either side of lock. Double set triggers. Mfg'd ca. 1840s-50s originally in percussion. Condition is good to very good retaining a smooth brown (perhaps later) tone to barrel, dark brown lock and hammer, lightly-toned brass. Stock is sound and smooth showing scattered marks and good striping with damaged stock toe, a 1" wood repair at top right of lockplate, 19" forend wood replaced behind nosecap. Moore & Co."; brass furniture includes long trigger guard with two rear finger-grips, 7.5" engraved open-work patchbox, crescent buttplate with long engraved lower tang and faceted upper, cloud-shaped sideplate, 1.75" nosecap, 3 pipes retaining the brass-tipped hardwood ramrod. Fullstock of highly-figured curly maple has raised fluted cheekpiece and double set triggers. Mfg'd ca. 1850s. Condition is very good, the barrel with later blue over nicks and light pitting, lock is smooth blue-brown, brass lightly age-toned. Stock is sound and smooth having a professionally repaired thru-break at wrist, another at right-front of lock, two secure repaired cracks at left and one at right between the ramrod pipes, lovely grain, color and added finish. Antique American Flintlock Kentucky Long Rifle, NVSN, .54 cal., unmarked 41" round-to-octagonal pinned barrel, dovetailed low-blade front and notched rear sights, double incised lines at either side of rear sight; delicate English-import flat lockplate with step at rear has sparse "turkey track" engraving, matching "swan's neck" cock and is marked "Condon/Warranted" below the integral pan; brass furniture includes trigger guard with finger-scroll at rear, 7.25" patchbox with hinged door opening to butt trap for spare nipples, linen patches (none present), crescent buttplate with faceted top tang, "bowtie" sideplate, nosecap and 3 ferrules retaining the plain hardwood ramrod. Fullstock of varnished and artificially-striped maple has "Roman Nose" butt profile, relief fluted cheekpiece at left, raised panels at either side of lock, step at lower thimble. Mfg'd early 19th Century. Condition is very good retaining traces of what may be barrel blue along the stock margins, else smooth gunmetal gray-brown showing heavy pitting in touchhole area, brass with light toning. Edges, markings and engraving are mostly sharp. Lock appears to be original flintlock with correct parts, touchhole apparently was restored at some time. Sharps' Patent/Sept. 12th, 1848" at right and "C,52536" on upper tang, other markings obscured; 2-pc. 3/4 stock of oil-finished walnut has sling loop at belly, crescent buttplate, three spring-retained bands (middle with sling loop), nosecap. Mfg'd ca. 1860s, altered 1867 to .50-70 centerfire at the Sharps factory, by removing the pellet-primer mechanism and replacing the buttstock with one lacking a patchbox. Condition is about very good showing age and military use: the metal surfaces are gunmetal gray with overall cleaned light-to-moderate erosion (heavy on buttplate tang) and mostly obscured markings. Stocks show moderate dings/losses, no inspectors' marks, but are sound with nice color. Action is crisp, bore is heavily corroded. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)

Antique Sharps New Model 1863 "Straight Breech" Metallic Cartridge Conversion Saddle-Ring Carbine, #81400, .50-70 CF cal., 22" round barrel has pinned low-blade front sight, sliding-leaf rear marked "R.S. Lawrence/Patented/Feb. 15th, 1859"; straight breech receiver has left-side maker's name and 1848 patent date ahead of saddle bar and ring, Lawrence name and patent date at top-right, and "C. Sharps' Patent/Oct. 5th, 1852" below, serpentine lever drops breechblock open for loading/auto ejection, flat-face hammer cocks action; oil-stained forestock retained by a single band, matching buttstock has left-side "RTS" (R.T. Safford) inspector's cartouche and "DFC" (David F. Clark) cartouche (added at time of conversion), lacks patchbox but has original notched crescent buttplate. Carbine was refinished in blue at the Sharps factory, barrel got a new 3-groove bore-liner, and a new buttstock was installed during conversion. Condition is fine retaining approx. 40% darkening barrel blue having scattered blotchiness, receiver with 50% blue and light peppering at right side. Stocks are sound and smooth with sharp "RTS" and faint "DFC" cartouches (perhaps lightly sanded and re-oiled), show lovely grain and color. Edges are sharp, markings are generally soft due to factory refinish. Action is crisp, bore is bright with sharp rifling. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)

Patch) at breech, has stud at muzzle retaining the button-tip ramrod; 9.5" receiver has 6" hinged breechblock (with hammer and nipple) marked "U.S./S. North/Midltn/Conn/1836" that tips up for loading when released by hook-type lever below; steel fittings include hook and stock plate, trigger guard with two finger-ridges behind bow and sling-ring at long rear tang, 7" hinged 2-part implement bay door extending to flat buttplate, two spring-retained bands. Mfg'd ca. 1834-39. Condition is very good as altered, the steel parts retaining traces of brown lacquer but otherwise bright. Stock with faint "NWP" cartouche at left wrist. The short 21" barrel is from a Model 1842 carbine, without the ramrod-bayonet and mount of the M1833. Breech hinge and mechanism are secure and function as designed.
