Antique Japanese Shinto Period Samurai Katana Sword

Lot # 1 (Sale Order: 2 of 789)

Antique Japanese Shinto Period Samurai Katana Sword, with 25.25" shinogi-zukuri blade, narrow straight suguha hamon temperline, chu-kissaki point with small turn back ko-maru boshi. Nakago tang is o-suriage mumei shortened and unsigned with a dark rust patina. The habaki is silver foil covered copper with horizontal engraved decorations. Mounts have a wood scabbard covered with lightly textured black lacquer and scattered spots of gold foil. The tsuka handle is wood covered with rayskin and wrapped with a thin dark blue silk ito. The fuchi and kashira handle fittings are shakudo with Nanako and feature scenes of birds done in shakudo, copper, and gold. While of similar in motif, they are not a perfect match. The fuchi is signed on the bottom by the maker. The menuki under the wrapping are shakudo and gold pine trees. The tsuba guard is iron with a shakudo rim and features thin overlays of silver and gold birds and pine trees. The tsuba measures 75mm tall and 68mm wide, with hitsu-ana holes for a kozuka and kogai, but there are no slots in the saya scabbard for those type of fittings. The seppa guard spacers are silver foil covered copper with edges decorated to resemble bamboo, which is quite unusual. 37" OAL. Condition is good, the blade showing numerous patches of light scratches from improper cleaning, a couple of light rust stains, and some very light rust near the habaki. The hamon temper is clear and visible throughout the blade. No edge nicks. The tsuba has a dark patina to the iron with some losses to the gold overlay. The silver overlayed designs are heavily oxidized, but visible under bright light. The rayskin on the handle shows some shrinkage, and the handle wrapping shows light wear and minor fraying. The fuchi/kashira show some light oxidation and minor wear. The saya scabbard is missing its kogiri lower fitting and the kurikata sageo mount near the top. The lacquer on the saya shows numerous chips and losses, wear, and is held together with some re-enforced tape. Est.: $1,200-$1,500.

Silver Panels With Gold Inlay Work, NVSN, approx. .56 cal., 10.5" round barrel is cannon-turned at muzzle and inlaid with gold Arabesque scrolls and tiny gold poincon perhaps indicative of the maker or Islamic region.
