U.S. Naval Model 1852 Officer's Sword

Lot # 81 (Sale Order: 83 of 599)      

U.S. Model 1852 Naval Officer's Sword, 28'' blade, 34'' overall, with gilt Phrygian helmet pattern guard, the pommel of which is decorated with an eagle surrounded by 13 stars, oakleaves and acorns. The quillion terminates in a dolphin's head, and the blade is etched with naval symbols and motifs. Leather-covered scabbard with gilded throat, centerpiece and chafe, with dolphin-bodied drag. Condition is good. Scabbard with patination and loss of finish to leather portion, but no separations to stitching and remaining remarkably complete. Blade with some corrosion at leather washer, which is present but flat. Double-strand wrapped gilt wire has separated in places on fishskin grip. Old knot is present but frayed and with some losses. Guard and handle with mild discoloration and signs of age and wear. Leather scabbard body with cracking and creases on both sides; throat with a dent on the frontside. Blade with minor carbon spotting near tip. The sawtooth back remains very sharp. Handle with oil darkening and guard with mild discoloration. Release button remains tight and functions properly. Overall length is 26-3/4,'' checkered hard rubber grips, with a hooked quillon. Guard is marked ''62922'' with the reverse regimental marked ''36B797'', and additional ''crown'' marking on the pommel. Steel tipped leather scabbard is marked ''35B954''. Condition is very good. Bright blade with signs of age, use, and also appears to have been lightly cleaned. Exposed metal surfaces with an overall patina. Hard rubber grips with minor flattening.
