Single edged, straight, bright blade with fuller. Maker marked by Ames Mfg. Co. on one side of the ricasso and "U.S.N. G.G.S. 1870" stamped on the reverse. Civil War Named Confederate States Navy Captured US M1860 Naval Cutlass. Named to Master's Mate Arthur C. Freeman of the CSS Water Witch. Single edged, slightly curved blade with fuller. Brass hilt with ribbed leather covered grip. No visible markings on blade or hilt. Lot also includes letters of authenticity. On the night of June 3rd, 1864 Arthur C. Freeman was part of a Confederate marine raiding force, which under the cover of darkness boarded the USS Water Witch anchored in Ossabaw Sound off Savannah, GA. After a brief fight, the Union crew surrendered and the vessel & cutlass were captured. Later that same year the ship was scuttled to prevent recapture by approaching Union forces.
