CIVIL WAR NAMED MEDICAL OFFICER EPAULETS | Post Mexican War - Indian Wars Medical Officer Epaulets. Named to Colonel Charles Henry Crane, Assistant Surgeon General of the Army. (1) Pair of Full Bird Colonel Dress Uniform Epaulets. Bullion stitching on felt. (1) Original Studio Portrait of Colonel Crane. (1) Discharge of Service document signed by Colonel Crane. Framed. US Army Colonel Charles Henry Crane was from Newport, RI. He was the son of Colonel Ichabod B. Crane. Charles graduated from Yale University and later Attended Harvard Medical school in 1847. He was placed under contract by the US Army as an Acting Assistant Surgeon in Mexico during the Mexican War, and later received a commission into the US Army in 1848. During his time in the Army, Crane served in California, New York, Virginia, Oregon and Florida. During the Civil War Crane was appointed Medical Director, Department of the South, where he was transferred to Washington D.C. to serve in the Surgeon General's Office. Colonel Crane was one of the attending physicians to President Lincoln after he was shot at Ford's Theatre in 1865. Later, in 1882 he was appointed Assistant Surgeon General, then promoted to Brigadier General after his appointment to Surgeon General, US Army. Crane passed away one year later on October 10, 1883 in his home in Washington D.C. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia in Section 1, Grave 62W. Provenance | Collection of Brigadier General Dr. Edward R. Burka (1930-2021): BG Burka was an avid collector of and expert on U.S. medical military insignia, uniforms, and instruments. Over his lifetime he assembled a comprehensive militaria collection. His collection included many extremely fine high-grade examples of 19th and 20th C. militaria. Items are consigned by the estate.
