WWII USAAF KIA NAMED PURPLE HEART GROUPING

WWII USAAF KIA Purple Heart Grouping. Named to 1st Lieutenant John V. Scanlan 0770432, of the 15th Fighter Group. Includes two unnumbered, named Purple Heart medals with cases, one has miniature medal and lapel pin. Pilot wings without maker mark, cadet cap badge, sweetheart ring, 10th Air Force patches, Pilot's flight log named to Scanlan with training flights, Purple Heart certificate, photographs, identification cards, military paper work, and more. Lot also includes Vietnam wartime correspondence named to Scanlan's brother Captain William J. Scanlan. 1st Lieutenant John V. Scanlan was born on July 15, 1921 in Pennsylvania. He served with the 15th Fighter Group, 47th Fighter Squadron. On June 23, 1945 he took off from Iwo Jima for a mission over Japan in his P-51D Mustang #44-72650. While over Japan, Scanlan was shot down by a Japanese Zero and was last seen safely parachuting to the ground by his wingman. He was taken in by some Japanese civilians, but later was turned over to an angry mob and was killed. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery Section 34, Site 3897.
