WWII US ALBERT F. HEGENBERGER PRESENTATION WINGS

WWII USAAF Major General and Early Aviation Pioneer, Albert F. Hegenberger, Presentation Wings. Pin back construction with "Major Albert F. Hegenberger 15 May 1937" engraved on the back. Maker marked by Amcraft and marked Sterling. Major General Albert Francis Hegenberger was born September 30, 1895 in Boston, Massachusetts. Hegenberger was a famous early aviation pioneer. He was the first to complete major milestones in aviation history such as the first transpacific flight to Hawaii, which was a flight distance record at the time, the first instrument only solo flight, and the first blind flying landing system. During WWII he held duties such as command of the 18th Bombardment Wing at Hickam Field, VII Bomber Command chief of staff, 2nd Air Force assistant chief of staff, II Bomber Command commanding officer, 14th Air Force chief of staff, and commander of the 10th Air Force, and was promoted to Major General by the end of the war. He also received the 1927 Mackay Trophy, the 1934 Collier Trophy, and in 1976 Hegenberger was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio. He passed away in 1983 at the age of 87 and is buried in All Faiths Memorial Park, Casselberry, Seminole County, Florida.

WWII USAAF 332nd Bomb Squadron, 94th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force B-17 Waist Gunner Swiss Internee Grouping. Named to Waist Gunner and Sergeant Mitchell R. Friedberg, 17175954, B-17 #42-38034 Bomber "Twats it to you?" (1) Pair of dog tags. (2) ID bracelets. (1) 3" Sterling Aerial Gunner Wings. (1) British Made Bullion Bailout Boot patch. (1) Silk Scarf with B-17 "Twats it to you?", unit name, "Switzerland July 31st, 1944" and "Mitch" stiched on the ends. (1) Photo copy of the Missing Air Crew report. Sergeant Mitchell Friedberg, served as a waist gunner aboard the B-17 #42-38034 Bomber "Twats it to you?" during bombing mission to Munich on July 31, 1944. On the return flight, "This aircraft was observed to leave the formation between the target and rally point but continued to follow the formation in a straggling manner. A/C was last seen after turn from rally point to course out, straggling and under control. No further information is known. A/C is believed to have been damaged by flak which was very accurate in the target area", according the the MAC. It is known that the crew made an emergency landing in neutral Switzerland and immediately were captured by Swiss Forces. Sergeant Friedberg and the entire crew of 9 were taken to a Swiss internment camp in the mountains where they remained until the wars end in 1945.
