During WWII, he flew over 80 missions in the Pacific Theater. Though granted a commission, he later reverted to Master Sergeant to maintain his flight status after the war. Before the Korean War, then-Major Marion Carl selected Lurie as a jet pilot in the Marine Corps' first jet squadron, VMF-122. When the war began, he deployed with VMF-311, the Marine Corps' first jet combat squadron, and flew the F9F-2 Panther in 116 combat missions. After the war, he became a VIP Aircraft Commander, and transported U.S. and foreign government officials to more than 50 countries. Alongside Col. Luther S. Moore, he piloted the first U.S. Marine Corps airplane over the North Pole. During the Vietnam War (third combat tour across three wars) Lurie flew over 2,000 hours in the R4D-8 and UH-1E Gunship over the course of 25 months. Notably, he was able to fly with his son, Robert Lurie Jr., in VMO-2, before his son was KIA on July 2, 1968. Master Gunnery Sergeant Lurie, concluded his Marine Corps career as the Commandant’s VIP pilot, retired in 1973 alongside the last three active Naval Aviation Pilots (NAPs) in the Marine Corps. Over his career, Laurie Sr accumulated over 17,000 flight hours across 30 different aircraft and received the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Army and Navy Commendation Medals, five Air Medals, the Purple Heart, WWII Victory, Korean Service and the Vietnam Campaign medals. After retirement, Lurie remained in aviation, worked as Chief Pilot, Vice President, and Director of Flight Operations for an international corporation, and added another 10,000+ flight hours to his record. He retired in 1996 and passed away on September 20, 2009, in Havelock, North Carolina. He is buried at the Marine Corps Air Station Cemetery in Havelock.

USAF CIA U-2 SPY PLANE PILOT F.G. POWERS K-2B SUIT
Lot # 125512 (Sale Order: 509 of 889)
USAF / CIA U-2 Spy Plane Pilot Francis Gary Powers' K-2B Flying Suit. Allen Overall Company Manufacture tag present, dated 14 March 1963. Crown zippers. Size medium regular. No patches or nametapes present. This flight suit was gifted by Powers to the consignor’s father, Murray Robert Mayer, a U.S. Navy Intelligence veteran and close personal friend of Francis Gary Powers. During their friendship, Powers gifted this flight suit to Mayer as a memento that was to be given on to his son, Brian Mayer. Included with the suit is a letter of provenance / fact signed by the consignor, Brian Mayer. It is only known that this flying suit belonged to Powers. It is not known as to specifically when or in what capacity he may have worn it. Powers can be viewed wearing the same type of suit on the story about "The Powers Incident" at the National Museum Of The United States Air Force website. A copy of that image is also attached as the last image of this lot listing. Francis Gary Powers was born August 17, 1929, in Jenkins, Kentucky. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1952 as a Photo Laboratory Technician and was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant after completing flight training. In 1956, Powers was recruited by the CIA for its U-2 Spy Plane Program, and conducted covert reconnaissance missions over the Soviet Union. After he was discharged from the Air Force as a Captain in May 1956, he became a pilot with the CIA. On May 1, 1960, while piloting a U-2 Spy Plane over Soviet territory, Powers was shot down by a Soviet S-75 Dvina surface-to-air missile. He survived the crash, was captured, and sentenced to 10 years in a Soviet prison for espionage. The incident caused an international crisis, exposed the U.S. espionage efforts and derailed a planned peace summit, and further escalated Cold War tensions. Powers served 21 months in prison before he was released in a US-Soviet prisoner exchange in 1962. He went on to work as a test pilot for Lockheed until 1970, when he was dismissed following the publication of his book, "Operation Overflight." Subsequently, he became a helicopter pilot for KNBC Channel 4 in Los Angeles. On August 1, 1977, Powers died in a helicopter crash while covering the brush fires in Santa Barbara County, CA. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

WWII D-DAY FLOWN FLAG OF LST 331 - UTAH BEACH
Lot # 125513 (Sale Order: 510 of 889)
Historically Important WWII D-Day Flown Flag of LST-331 - Utah, Omaha, & Sword Beaches, Invasion of Normandy. Brought back by Bronze Star Recipient and LST Group Thirty-Five’s Senior Medical Officer, Lieutenant Harry Clarke Lawther, Medical Corps, USNR, who served aboard LST-331 during D-Day and the days following. The flag and accompanying items are consigned by Lawther's family. This 48-star US Ensign Flag was flown aboard LST-331 (Landing Ship, Tank) on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The ship was assigned to LST Flotilla Twelve, LST Group Thirty-Five, LST Division Seventy and played a pivotal role in multiple Allied operations, including the North African Occupation, Operation Husky (the invasion/occupation of Sicily), Operation Avalanche (the landings at Salerno), and Operation Overlord (the Normandy invasion / D-Day). LST-331 participated in the early landings at Utah Beach as one of 11 Coast Guard-Manned Navy LST’s actively taking part in the invasion. On June 6th, LST-331 initially delivered supplies, troops, and vehicles in support of the US Army’s 4th Infantry Division. From D-Day through June 25, LST-331 contributed significantly to Allied beachhead support operations. It landed at Omaha Beach and was reported to have discharged troops, vehicles, and anti-tank guns of the British Army’s Kings Own Shropshire Light Infantry on Queen Red-Sword Beach. Some online bidding platforms limit the number of images associated with each lot. Visit the following link to view an image album containing all image files for this lot. (You may need to copy & paste the link in a browser) https://photos.app.goo.gl/HKTwUHz3ihNFHzGR8 This lot includes the following - 48-star US Ensign Flag flown aboard LST-331 on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The Flag is multi-piece, linen/wool construction with machine embroidered stars and a reinforced header with four brass grommets. “US ENS” partial ink stamp present, but extremely faded. The ends of the flag are frayed. Approximate size: 30" x 42". Photocopy of “Secret” Bronze Star recommendation letter for Lawther, written by LST-331’s C.O., Lieutenant William Daniel Strach Jr., USCGR. On June 15, 1944, LST-331 landed on Queen Red, Sword Beach and was ordered to beach and dry out in order to discharge her load of troops, vehicles and anti-tank guns of the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. When the ship was dried out beyond possibility of retracting, a German battery of 105mm Howitzers, some 8,000 yards to the east, opened fire onto the seven beached LSTs. A shell burst and sprayed shrapnel onto the deck of LST-331, injuring several men and causing damage. Lieutenant Lawther managed to evacuate the casualties to the beach and then proceeded to turn back to LST-331 (which was the most exposed ship) in order to render aid to anyone if necessary. Pair of USN Lieutenant Commander Shoulder Boards (2) Ribbon Bars with European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign (4 Battle Stars) and American Campaign ribbons. LST-331 remained in service for only a short period following the June 15 attack, as it was decommissioned on November 20, 1944 and transferred to the British Royal Navy as HM LST-331. The British utilized LST-331 in their Far East Campaigns as a part of “W” Task Force, 6th Flotilla, traveling down the Coast of Burma and recapturing Rangoon, participating in the Invasion of Malaya and Port Swettenham, Singapore, Bangkok and assisted in the return of former P.O.W.s of the Japanese. LST-331 completed service in the Royal Navy on March 16, 1946 and was given back to the US Navy where it was stripped, scuttled and sunk in the Subic Bay, Philippines. During its tenure with the U.S., LST-331 earned the American Campaign Medal, Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal (4 battle stars) and the World War II Victory Medal. The Allied Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), involved nearly 160,000 Allied Troops (half of whom were American). The D-Day Invasion, and the sacrifice of those involved, signaled a turning point in the WWII European theater, and contributed largely to the defeat of Germany. Only a handful of legitimate D-Day flown flags are known to exist in the market. As such, this D-Day Flown Flag is an exceptional piece of history. All items in this lot are consigned by the family of Lieutenant Harry Clark Lawther. All items included have been in the direct possession of the family since being brought back by Lawther. Also included from the Consignor (Widow of Lawther's son) is a signed statement of fact / provenance.
Condition: Flag is battle worn. All else is very good.

WWII USN "OSCAR" PARATROOPER PARADUMMY PROTOTYPE
Lot # 125514 (Sale Order: 511 of 889)
Scarce WWII US Navy "Oscar" Decoy Paratrooper Paradummy Prototype. Tested by the Navy Beach Jumper Unit in 1943. Olive drab repainted, metal alloy construction. No visible marks. Post war added parachute pack and belt. Original WWII silk flare parachute. Included with "Oscar" are testing history research and a DVD containing declassified footage from the OSS Field Photographic Branch, exhibiting the Beach Jumper Unit tests of "Oscar" in March and May 1943 at Camp Bradford, Virginia. During World War II, the U.S. Navy's Beach Jumper Unit was tasked with developing and implementing deception strategies in preparation for Operation Overlord. One such tactic involved the deployment of decoy paratroopers, known as "paradummies," designed to divert enemy attention and potentially lure opposing forces into ambushes. The first prototype, nicknamed "Oscar," was constructed from cast metal and equipped with a parachute. However, following testing, "Oscar" was deemed ineffective due to its size and rigidity, prompting a reassessment of the design. Despite this initial setback, the concept of paradummies persisted, leading to the successful development of improved models that were effectively deployed by Allied forces during the Normandy Invasion.
Size: 18 1/4" x 4" x 7 1/4"
Condition: Good. Moderate wear and damage to the left arm and back. The consignor repainted Oscar and added the parachute pack and belt (both are contemporary / post war) for aesthetics.
