Eagle head officer’s sword circa 1800-1820 with brass scabbard. It has a 30-1/2” curved blade has floral engraving both sides plus panoply of arms including a liberty cap on a pole. The brass hilt has a bone grip and finely detailed eagle pommel having a feathered crest. Condition: the blade is smooth, free of pits and edge nicks, and retains about half of its original gilt in the engraving. The scabbard has various dents and the tip is worn through, but none of these affect its function. (500-1,000)....more

U.S. Model 1832 Foot Artillery Sword having a 19-1/8" unmarked double edged blade and a brass mounted black leather scabbard with buff leather frog. The guard also is unmarked. Condition: the blade is bright except for dark areas at the ricasso and near the tip but has good edges. There is untouched patina on all brass while the fine scabbard has most of the original surface finish on the leather. The front of the frog had been blackened, much of which has now worn away leaving a brownish appearance. DS-170. (500-900)....more

U.S. Model 1840 Artillery saber with scabbard on a 32" curved blade marked on the reverse ricasso AMES MFG /CHICOPEE/MASS and on the obverse ricasso U.S./A.D.K./ 1862. Condition: the blade is bright with scattered staining but no significant pitting or edge nicks. Each side near the edge has a wavy grind mark lightly done. The hilt has an untouched patina on the brass and has most the original brown leather wrap and all the twisted brass wire. The iron scabbard has most of the original finish and no dents. DS-157. Attached are reproduction white buff leather belt, hangers, shoulder strap, buckle, and sword knot. Condition: the blade is steel gray with scattered light pitting but no nicks on the edge. The hilt has been polished but has most the leather wrap and all the twisted brass wire. The scabbard is a close fit but is from another sword and is missing the throat. DS-H. (300-600)....more

It has a 28-1/8" straight blade deeply etched in a floral pattern with “United States Medical Staff” plus “W.H./ Horstmann/& Sons/Philadelphia” on the obverse and an eagle with a panoply of arms on the reverse. The brass hilt has “MS” in silver applied to the obverse langet. The brass scabbard has brass fittings with high relief floral design. Condition: the blade is bright with no edge nicks or staining. The hilt is untouched with bright gilt in protected areas while the scabbard has an even mellow patina and no dents. DS-175. (1500-2000)....more

U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officers sword with a brass mounted leather scabbard on a 31-3/4" blade etched in floral designs and panoply of arms having an eagle on the obverse and “US” on the reverse plus “C.Roby & Co/W. Cheltmsford/Mass” on the ricasso. Twisted brass wire binds the shark skin grip wrap. Condition: the blade has all the etching with a steel gray patina and is free of edge nicks. An untouched patina is on the brass hilt and all the shark skin wrap remains with all the brass wire. The scabbard brass is untouched and the leather is very good except for a kink in the lower half. Identified U.S. Model 1850 Staff and Field Officers sword with a brass mounted iron scabbard engrave

Lot # 309 (Sale Order: 9 of 802)      

Identified U.S. Model 1850 Staff and Field Officers sword with a brass mounted iron scabbard engraved on the obverse throat “Col. James Barnes/18th Regt./Mass. Vol.” and stamped on the reverse “AMES MFG. CO./CHICOPEE/ MASS”. A graduate of West Point, Col. Barnes was promoted to Brigadier General in 1862 and was in command of the 5th Corps that went into the Wheatfield at Gettysburg and embarrassed itself by retreating without firing a shot. He could not to be found during critical moments of the battle but still suffered a leg wound from a bursting shell. He was never again given a command. The 32” blade is unmarked. “US” is between the 2 branches of the guard and the grip is wrapped in shark skin bound with twisted brass wire. Condition: the blade is smooth gray with no edge nicks and only has traces of etching. The hilt is cleaned bright still retaining traces of gilt while most of the grip wrap remains with all the wire. U.S. Model 1850 Staff and Field Officers sword with a brass mounted iron scabbard The 33” blade is etched in a floral design with “US” on the reverse and an eagle on the obverse which has a “PROVED” round brass inlay on the ricasso. The brass hilt has “US” between the 2 branches of the guard and the grip is wrapped in shark skin bound with twisted brass wire. Condition: the blade is steel gray with much of the etching still visible and no nicks on the edge. The hilt has a nice patina, most of the shark skin wrap, and all the twisted brass wire binding. The scabbard brass fittings have a nice patina with some dents, but no dents in the body which has most of its finish. DS-I. (600-900)....more

Presentation U.S. Model 1852 Naval Officers sword with sword belt, hangers, and belt plate. The scabbard throat is engraved “P.BURKE./WARRANT MACHINIST/U.S.NAVY/PRESENTED BY HIS/ MESS MATES U.S.S. GALVESTON”. The 30” Horstmannn straight blade is etched both sides and marked “P. BURKE” in a panel on the obverse. The gilded brass hilt has a shark skin grip bound with brass wire. Condition: very good. The blade has all the nickel and the hilt most of the gilt with wear on the edges. Some flaking is on the scabbard leather, but it also has most of the gilt on the brass as does the belt plate. (200-400)....more
