Cased 3rd Model Tranter Percussion Revolver

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 27 of 344)

54-bore (.442 caliber), 6" octagonal barrel, S/N 12365T. Nickel finish, checkered one-piece walnut grip. 5-shot cylinder with standard 3rd model Tranter's patent "double trigger" mechanism with frame mounted spring safety on left rear of frame and standard Tranter cylinder arbor pin retaining mechanism on forward right of frame. Tranter's patent loading lever secured to left of frame with screw. Unmarked top strap with no retailer markings, frame with typical, light flowing foliate engraving and standard Tranter markings including the serial number. London commercial proofs on upper left angled barrel flat near frame and between chambers on the cylinder. Revolver is contained in a standard Tranter style compartmentalized factory casing with mahogany exterior veneer, dual brass hook clasps on front, "Bible" hinges and a dark green baize lining. Typical factory cased accessories are included in the casing, consisting of a Tranter's Patent and 54 marked brass bullet mold, an Eley marked tin of percussion caps, japanned bullet and lube tins with green paper Tranter labels, a brass tipped wood cleaning rod, an ebony handled cone wrench and an unmarked pewter oiler.

Condition: Fine. Retains most of a period nickel finish with a milky age patina. While the nickel appears to be absolutely from the period of use, the nickel plating of firearms was a process in its infancy when this revolver was produced circa 1861. Some American retailers like Schuyler, Hartley and Graham were offering nickel plating during this period but such finishes are extremely rare prior to the latter half of the 1860s. All markings and engraving remain clear and crisp, revolver remains mechanically functional with a fine bore that shows moderate oxidation scattered along its length. Grip shows some light wear and handling marks with some minor flattening to the sharp tips of the checkering. Case and accessories all remain in very good to fine condition, especially the mold. Most items show some light to moderate expected wear, including the case interior.

.44 caliber, 33" barrel length, S/N: NSN. Single-shot percussion rifle with target sights, octagonal-to-round tapered heavy barrel, double set triggers, and what appears to be a bayonet mount. Blued metal finish with plain straight-grip Monte Carlo-style stock. Target sights include an aperture rear sight, half-hood front sight, and adjustable mid-barrel sight. Features a Swiss-style metal buttplate, serpentine triggerguard, forend cap, and front swivel sling mount. "J. SCHMID IN ONSTMITTINGEN" is marked to top of barrel. Schuetzen-style rifles are single-shot competition guns that were used widely in Europe from about 1875-1945. Most are custom made by independent gunmakers of the period or by Bavarian immigrants. This item in particular is attributed to gunsmith J. Schmid from the town of Onstmittingen, Switzerland. Twice Altered Remington New Model Army Metallic Cartridge Conversion Revolver

Lot # 33 (Sale Order: 33 of 344)

.44-40 caliber, 8" octagonal barrel, S/N 83184. Single-action revolver with fixed cylinder, obsolete loading lever, exposed spur hammer, and fixed notch and blade sights. Blued metal finish, brass triggerguard, and plain walnut grips. Conversion number "249" on grip frame under grip and under barrel. Triggerguard marked "44" on right and with a "UB" to left of triggerguard. 5-shot round cylinder is marked as "PATENTED APRIL 3D 1856". The revolver appears to have originally been a Remington factory alteration to .46RF that was later altered to centerfire, apparently .44-40 as a dummy fits the chambers perfectly. Serial number and conversion number are both marked under left side grip.

Condition: Good. Retains some of the original blue as well as what appears to be older touch up blue. Markings mostly legible. Alteration to center fire somewhat crudely affected with long firing pin added to hammer. Mechanically functional, good bore with oxidation and some pitting. Grips appear to be old replacements with a crude and incorrect screw. Grips sanded and with wear.

Confederate Naval Cutlass by Thomas, Griswold & Co

Lot # 34 (Sale Order: 34 of 344)

21" spear point, semi-wasp-waisted blade, 26.25" overall length. 5.25" sand cast brass hilt with fish scale patterned grip without rivets and US "drooped wing" eagle motif cast into the pommel cap on both sides. Blade secured to the hilt with a simple peen at the top of the pommel cap. Sheet brass half-basket guard with rolled edge reinforcement and separately applied brass quillon at top of guard. Blade marked on the reverse in two lines THOMAS GRISWOLD & Co in an arc over NEW-ORLEANS. This scarce Confederate naval cutlass was based upon the US Model 1841 Ames naval cutlass and was produced by the New Orleans firm of Thomas, Griswold & Co which had been the long time fancy goods & military equipment dealers Hyde & Goodrich before the war. Thomas, Griswold & Co produced a wide variety of edged weapons for the Confederate south during their short time in business from the summer of 1861 through the fall of New Orleans on May 1, 1862. Most of the edged weapons, including the naval cutlasses are marked "T.G & Co / N.O" rather than with the full name of the company and the city spelled out. These fully marked examples are quite scarce and desirable.

Condition: Good to very good. Blade has been cleaned in the past and is now toning down to a lightly oxidized gray patina with scattered discoloration and patches of darker age toning. Blade is mostly free of pitting, with the exception of the tip which shows some light pitting. Blade also shows remnants of marks from an old sharpening and some light scuff marks from the cleaning. Hilt with a medium golden patina and showing some of the expected casting flaws typical of southern manufacture. Guard with a darker, bronze patina toning to ocher. Hilt and guard show some file and finishing marks as would be expected, and the separately applied quillon is a slightly different color than the guard, which is also typical. Blade is tightly secured to the hilt and the peen is undisturbed, but the blade does show some minor rotational movement in the hilt. The Griswold marking is mostly legible but is partly obscured due to a combination of an apparently weak die strike and possibly due to the old cleaning.

Rare "SFP" Pennsylvania State Police Force Marked Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Carbine

Lot # 49 (Sale Order: 49 of 344)

.45-70 caliber, 22" barrel, S/N 37578 (mfg. ca1875). Blued finish, color case hardened breech block, smooth straight-gripped walnut stock. Breech block marked MODEL / 1873 / {eagle head} / {Crossed Arrows} / US, lock marked with {spread-winged eagle} and US / SPRINGFIELD / 1873. Barrel without proofs as is correct for this serial number range of Trapdoor rifles and carbines. High arch breech, two-piece triggerguard, smooth trigger, 3-click tumbler, solid buttplate with solid wood underneath, not cut for rods or tools. 1873 carbine pattern rear sight with base correctly graduated to 500 yards having a replaced 1,100 yard rifle ladder, pinned front sight blade, sling bar and ring. Long comb, short thick wrist replacement stock without cartouche or firing proof, as is correct for the early M1873s that received stock upgrades in the field, replacing the short-comb, long-wrist stocks that had issues with breakage. Stock with scarce Pennsylvania State Police Force marking on obverse butt that read S.P.F. (upside down) and then C.68.

Thanks to an August 2007 article in Man at Arms by Dusan P. Farrington, we know that the enigmatic S.P.F. marking means "State Police Force" and refers to early equipping of the Pennsylvania State Police who were formed in 1905 and were involved with dealing with numerous labor disputes during the early 1900s. According to his research 220 of the Trapdoor carbines were purchased in 1906 and another 220 in 1909. The initial deliveries were primarily Model 1877s that had been refurbished during the early 1880s, many of which bear starred serial number suffixes. The second group of guns purchased in 1909 included a wider variety of models including M1877s, M1879s, M1884s and even a handful of original M1873 carbines that had been restocked with the later production short wrist-long comb stocks. Research indicates that the letter referred to the State Police district (town and county) where the gun was issued, with "C" being Reading, PA - Berks County. At that time only about 15 guns with these markings were known and interestingly guns C.67 (S/N 35343) and C.79 (S/N 21029) were both Model 1873 carbines that were apparently part of the 1909 purchase and like this example were then issued to the Pennsylvania State Police in Berks County. A very rare and interesting gun that was produced in 1875 and saw service on the frontier during the height of the Indian Wars of the Custer Era and later saw use in Pennsylvania in the hands of the newly formed state police.

Provenance: From the Collection of Charlie Hinton

Condition: Good. Metal with traces of finish and moderate surface oxidation having a mostly brownish patina with hints of blue. Markings in metal remain legible. Mechanically functional. Good bore is moderately oxidized with scattered pitting and good rifling. Stock with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
