It is listed under Section III as a weapon removed from the NFA list as collectors’ items and classified as a curio or relic under the GCA stating: “The Bureau has determined that by reason of the date of their manufacture, design, and other characteristics, the following firearms are primarily collector’s items and are not likely to be used as weapons and, therefore, are excluded from the provisions of the National Firearms Act.”

Cased Pair of Side-by-Side Tap Action Flintlock Pistols by Twigg & Bass 

.40 caliber, 4” barrels, each 8” overall in length, no S/Ns. Single triggers, wood grips. Simple engraving on frames with “TWIGG & BASS” on the left side of frame and “LONDON” on the right side. The wood partitioned case is lined in green baize material with a metal flask marked “G. & J. W. H.” With an iron bullet mold, a cleaning rod and wood-handled screwdriver.

Condition: This pair of flintlock pistols are in overall very good + condition displaying a dark patina to metal surfaces. The actions are crisp, the markings sharp and the bores are good. The grips are very good to near fine. The casing is overall very good to near fine and the accessories are overall good. These guns were made ca 1788-1790 and were capable of being fired single shot or firing both barrels with a single pull of the trigger.

Cased Pair of Over/Under Tap Action Folding Trigger Flintlock Pistols by William Parker of London 

.38 caliber, 3” round screw barrels, ca 1793 to 1843. Each 6” overall in length with engraved frames and marked PARKER on the left side and HOLBORN, LONDON on the right side. The barrels are blued and the wood grips are beautifully decorated with silver military and patriotic scenes of armament, flags, a spread eagle and the British Lion. The pistols are also British proofed and the barrels are numbered 1 & 2 on one gun and 3 & 4 on the other, denoting their true pair status. Each gun is capable of firing each barrel single shot, or both barrels with a single pull on the trigger via adjustment of the left side lever on each pistol. The wood casing is partitioned and contains a brass powder flask and an iron barrel removal tool.

Condition: This cased pair of deluxe flintlock over/under pistols are in overall fine condition displaying the majority of their original blue finish on the barrels. The engraving is finely accomplished, the actions are crisp and the wood grips are fine with outstanding silver decoration as noted previously. The casing is overall very good to fine with green baize lining and very good + accessories including a key that operates the lock of the case. An outstanding set by a great maker!

Plant’s Mfg. Co. Front Loading Pocket Revolver 

.30 caliber cup primed, 3.5” engraved octagonal barrel, S/N 4495. Blued barrel, silver-plated engraved brass frame, rosewood grips.

Condition: This gun is in overall very good to near fine condition showing considerable original blue finish on the barrel that is marked on the top flat “EAGLE ARMS CO. NEW YORK” (manufacturer of this gun).  The cylinder also shows considerable original blue although muted.  The engraved frame shows scattered original silver in protected areas. The bore is very good +, the action is crisp and the markings are very good, as are the grips.  Interestingly, there are small initials “APC” at the front of the butt strap (possibly the period engraver’s initials?).  Plant’s patent of the front loading cylinder was an attempt to circumvent the Rollin White bored-through-cylinder patents controlled by Smith & Wesson at the time (ca mid-1860s).

Condition: This rare oddity pistol is in overall very good to fine condition showing a dark patina on metal surfaces with areas of original muted blue finish with some scattered spots of erosion. The gun is 9.25” overall, Crisp action, sharp markings and engraving, good bores and very good + checkered grips. These guns were made to fire all barrels simultaneously in a spread pattern for close-in defense.

A mechanism operated at the top of the frame permits covering of one bank of the barrels to allow for the firing on one side and then retracting the cover, permits firing of the other bank.  Period of manufacture unknown.

9mm caliber, 2” barrels. Engraving on integral frame, grip and on the triggerguard; ribbon engraving on underside of barrel is worn, but appears to read “I Pierre” and “Lepag.” Overall length of gun is 6.5”.

Condition: This interesting oddity is in overall very good condition with a light grey patina, some scattered pitting on the underside of the two bottom barrels. Finely accomplished period engraving and all three actions are working at time of description. The two outside hammers are operated by the two rear triggers and the center hammer ingeniously is actuated by a “reverse” trigger that is “set” by moving it forward and then releasing it by an extension under the triggerguard.

Very Rare Wm. W. Marston Three-Barrel Double-Action Percussion Pistol 

.31 caliber, approximately 4” barrel group, S/N 11. Blued finish, right side of barrel group in top flute is marked WM. W. MARSTON NEW YORK CITY PATD MAY 26, 1857. Wood grips. The gun is double-action and a manually operated extension between the hammer and percussion nipples of the barrel determines which of the three barrels will be fired when the hammer is dropped.

Condition: The condition of this pistol is overall very good to fine with considerable original blue remaining on the barrel assembly. There are also areas of original blue on the frame. The action is crisp as are the markings. The bores are good. The grips are very good + with minor mars from storage and the majority of original finish remaining. A very rare variation of the Marston multi-barrel, Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms (7C-028) indicates limited production of possibly only 10-20 made in the late 1850s.

.32 caliber, 3” barrel group with proof marks; engraved frame, hammer and triggerguard with “Jos. Manton, London” on left side of frame. Blued finish, finely silver inlaid wood grip with engraved silver ring at base of butt and scroll and floral engraved escutcheon inset at bottom of butt.

Condition: This oddity is in overall very good to fine condition displaying a dark patina on metal surfaces with hints of original blue on recoil shield. The action is crisp and the cylinder revolves by hand with the half cocking of the hammer and retraction of the triggerguard. The grips are fine with exceptional silver wire inlays complimented with inlaid silver floral work. A beautiful example of early English craftsmanship and artistry!
