Lot of Two Swords, Including a Masonic Knights Templar Sword

Lot # 561 (Sale Order: 34 of 484)      

Includes one Masonic Knights Templar sword and one U.S. Model 1860 Staff Officer's sword.  Knights Templar sword blade measures 30" and 37" overall.  Silver mounted hilt with ivory grips engraved with initials and Templar imagery.  Silver mounted steel scabbard engraved "PAUL P. ROEHM.  Blade engraved with masonic emblems and medieval tournament.  Left ricasso marked "FRANK HENDERSON KALAMAZOO MICH" in four lines.  M1860 Staff Officer's sword blade measures 30" and 35" overall.  Brass hilt with wire wrapped leather grip and steel scabbard.  Marked "13" on guard. No marks on ricasso.  

Condition: 1) Good condition. Blade has some darkening due to age and retains some of its gilt wash.  Grip has some damage near pommel.  Silver has tarnished throughout and ivory grip has some darkening.  ...more

U.S. Sword Bayonet by Collins & Co.

Lot # 562 (Sale Order: 35 of 484)      

20.25" blade, 25" overall.  Left ricasso marked "COLLINS & CO. HARTFORD CONN" and right ricasso marked "1862".  Brass hilt.  Also marked "31" behind ring.  

Condition: Good condition.  Blade has an overall gumnetal gray patina and the hilt has taken on a mustard coloring.  No damage to edge.

Trompe L'oeil by Adrianas M. Bauman, Reported to Have Hung in Frederic Remington's Studio

Lot # 564 (Sale Order: 37 of 484)      

62" x 42" paper illustration coated over in varnish, signed Adrianas M. Bauman / Copyright 1904 lower right. Tromp L'oeil depicting a dead rabbit and duck, with a hunter's jacket, shotgun, cartridge belt and hat hanging on a barn door. According to the previous owner, this hung in Frederic Remington's studio at some point.

Condition: The verso of the paper has several repaired patches. The paper has several areas of craquelure, with extensive damage along the lower right side.

Early 20th Century Tex-Mex Saddle

Lot # 568 (Sale Order: 41 of 484)      

Black leather covered half-Mexican tree with very wide saddle horn.  All edges hand-tooled, additional decorations in the form of brass conchos.  The skirts and the right side of the back jockey are contemporary replacements tooled to match the original parts of the saddle. Complete with fenders, iron cinch rings, wide Texas-style stirrup straps and wooden stirrups with tooled leather hoods. 

Provenance: John Ashworth Collection

Condition: Fair to good.  Age and service worn with some crazing. A number of small repairs. Metal with dark patina.

Near Relic Western Flat-Pommel Roping Saddle

Lot # 569 (Sale Order: 42 of 484)      

20.5" length (including extended skirt). Bentwood stirrups with leather covers, ca 1850-1870.

Condition: Leather is alligatored and dry, but still pliable and not flaking. Seat is becoming unraveled vertically at the center seam. Saddle appears to have all of its original iron tacks. Rings with replacement pendant tassels. Slight unraveling around the horn. Overall the saddle is in poor condition.

Western Saddle

Saddle decorated with interlocking horseshoe motifs embossed in the leather including the cantle, skirt and fender regions. Wood stirrups with contemporary aluminum trim. Ten bridal rosettes throughout the saddle. Roped girth strap and new wool and cotton saddle accessory. Underside of saddle with thick wool liner.

Condition: Off-side fender may be a replacement since it is void of the horse shoe motifs and has Greek key design not found on other sections of the saddle. Excellent.

Woven Headstall Attributed to Davey Hart

Lot # 572 (Sale Order: 45 of 484)      

25.5" x 6.75"x5.5"  Hand hitched headstall crafted of horsehair.  Hitched tack of this type was made in the latter part of the 19th century into the early 20th century by the inmates of several western state prisons as an effort to guide inmate activity as well as provide them a source of income. 

Condition: Very good condition, some fading of the dye used to color the hair. Piece is still flexible and plumes are soft and full.  A fine example of this unique American folk art.

9.5" x 6.25" silver-mounted iron roller bit with copper cricket.  Reins are of leather and are also mounted silver.  The piece is extensively engraved in a paisley pattern.  

Condition: Very good condition.  Iron has darkened throughout to an attractive patina.  Mouthpiece has been fitted with a copper cricket and copper accents. Reins are pliable and flexible.

9.5"x6" silver-mounted iron roller bit with slobber bar and copper cricket.  Silver is extensively engraves in a beautiful paisley pattern.
