This group includes three TLS from commanding officer of U.S. 43rd Infantry serving in the Philippine Islands, dated 1900 with one reading: I have to thank Dr. Gordon B. Meldrum, contract surgeon, for saving the lives of the wounded. They were kept up during those two long days by his indomitable spirit and constant care, carried on improvised litters over roughest trails, across rivers, under the hot sun. During the fight while caring for one man shot through the body while with me on the left side of the line, the men were ordered to move to the right. Dr. Meldrum directed the men near to carry the wounded man with them but ran on and left him, dying as all believed, still under fire. Then Dr. Meldrum picked him up by himself and carried him to cover, and finally saved his life. In my judgment by this one act, which his constant heroic conduct shows to have been not due to impulse but the highest sense of soldiery duty, Dr. Meldrum is entitled to the Medal of Honor, and I recommend that it be given him. Very respectfully Signed L.C. Andrews Major, 43rd Infantry, U.S.V. Commanding. The other two TLsS address this same battle near La Paz, Leyte, P.I., April 26, 1900. The lot also includes a copy photograph of Dr. Meldrum in his military uniform. While Dr. Meldrum did not receive the CMOH for this service there was a CMOH awarded to George M. Shelton for a very similar act of heroism during this battle.
Provenance: Descended directly through the family of John W. and Gordon Meldrum
