Engraved Powder Horn, Jeramiah Tinnan, 1747

Lot # 450 (Sale Order: 1 of 602)

Engraved Powder Horn, Jeramiah Tinnan, 1747

18" overall through the curve.  The octagonal spout is 3.625", the two strap-retaining rings beneath having some fracturing and loss. There is an old, shallow abrasion across the letters "AN" in the surname, not effecting their clarity.  The original, flat pine base is 2.75" in diameter and is inset from the rim of the horn 0.5". About half of the rim has been broken away long ago - a very common occurrence on horns with such a vulnerable feature. The two holes extend through the rim to accept the ties that secure the carrying strap. A large early-style "A" is cut in the face of the plug. Engraved during King George's War, 1744-1748 this fine horn bears the inscription in two lines "Jeramiah Tinnan His Horn ADYe1747".  The subject matter is that which is most commonly found on horns of the 1730's-1750's - two buck deer, a peacock in full display, a fox, and a speckled trout of generous size. These charming images are accompanied by several panels of attractive, well-executed foliated scrollwork.

This distinctive style, subject matter and careful craftsmanship compare favorably with the hand of one Stephen Parks (1721-?) of Concord, Massachusetts whose personal horn may be seen in the late James Dresslar's scholarly publication "Folk Art of American, The Engraved Powder Horn "(1996: 21).  This horn is now part of the collection of the Concord Museum.

The present cataloger has examined nine horns by Mr. Parks; they're in his own collection and are similarly engraved as the Tinnan piece and are dated 1747, 1749 and 1758 respectively, the last being the only one signed, and that with just his initials.

At this writing, after some in-depth research, no information has yet been found concerning the original owner. The surname is an uncommon one. Attesting to this was a survey of the Revolutionary War pension files of some 80,000 applicants which revealed only two men with this surname, both were from North Carolina and the spelling of their name was Tinnen with an "e".

King George's War was fought along the densely forested frontier between the northern British colonies and New France between 1744-1748. The combatants were small roving contingents of French and British regulars together with their respective Indian allies, and, for the British, significant provincial levies drawn primarily from New York, Massachusetts Bay, and New Hampshire. The British captured the important French fortress of Louisbourg in 1745 while French irregulars and Indians terrorized the upper York settlements, marauding as far south at Fort Massachusetts in the Hoosac River Valley. The Peace Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 restored the colonial borders to their pre-war status and returned Louisbourg to the French. Crown politics "outraged New Englanders, particularly Massachusetts colonists," who had suffered disproportionately while contributing the most in terms of funding and troops. Tensions re-ignited in 1755 with the advent of the French and Indian War.

Condition: The horn is very solid throughout, showing use, but no abuse, and retaining all of its original uncleaned coloring. Dated engraved horns fashioned prior to 1750, are seldom encountered and few can be identified as the work of a particular person. This description was done by Walter O'Connor.

Engraved Powder Horn of Josiah Morss, Dated 1760

Lot # 451 (Sale Order: 2 of 602)

Engraved Powder Horn of Josiah Morss, Dated 1760

17.25" overall length. Horn is inscribed Josiah Morss Horn Ensgn of Capt Holms Company in the Year 1760M July the 29 1760. Immediately above this are the stenciled initials ES and Montreail [sic] 1760. Immediately below the main verse is Fort Stanwix in block letters and C Ray in script letters and crudely dated 1846 followed by what appears to read Ann Dam. Near the throat of the horn in block letters is the name (of a subsequent owner?) Wm C Ray. Underneath this in crudely rendered letters Livonia Livington, NY. (Livonia is in Livingston County, New York)

In a separate pane on the horn is the script Made at Lake Ontario. Ensign Josiah Morss of Canterbury, M His Horn. In another separate pane of the horn near the throat in block letters reads Josiah Morss.

Etched on the horn is a mythical human figure with wings, three trees with four soldiers rendered in marching position, crouching shooting position, standing shooting position and prone shooting position. In a separate pane are two fish and pathway with a fisherman followed by two marching soldiers and trees and a crude structure. Undulating lines, cross hatching and other geometric forms are carved throughout the horn.

Black inked notations on top and bottom edges of horn AE 9 8843 and MG 1014. Engrailed edges on top and bottom of the main body of the horn. Throat of horn has two raised carved engrailed rings.

Buttplug is carved with the date 1846 and had carved flourished initials IS and a T all of which are partially obfuscated by a small old fragment of leather secured by three nails.

This historic horn is thought to have belonged to Josiah Morss (spelled as such) who is listed as Ensign (the junior commissioned rank) in Lieutenant Colonel and Captain Israel Putnam (of later Revolutionary War fame) 2nd Company of Colonel Eleazor Fitch's 4th Connecticut Regiment during the 1760 muster (see Rolls of Connecticut Men in the French and Indian War 1755-1762. Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, 1905, p.215). Five thousand Connecticut provincials were raised by order of the General Assembly in March 1760 to aid Crown forces during the upcoming campaign season. The roster shows that the 2nd Company was mustered in during mid-March and discharged on November 22, 1760. Putnam's Company was unusually large and experienced by the standard of the day, numbering 4 officers including Ensign Morss, 6 sergeants and five corporals, with 69 privates "who had served in some previous campaign" and "15 new privates."

During the decisive 1759 campaign the 4th Connecticut Regiment had "played an instrumental role in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga." For the 1760 campaign the provincials were mobilized primarily to garrison the chain of forts guarding the northern New York frontier thereby securing the lines of communication. This essential work was carried out while an exposed British Army under Brigadier General James Murray fought desperately to retain control of Quebec City which had been captured the previous September. Despite losing nearly a thousand regulars challenging a determined French attack during the see-saw battle of St. Foy, Murray managed to retire behind the walls of Quebec. Thanks to superior artillery, the depleted Redcoats were able to hold until the ice on the St. Lawrence melted making way for the Royal Navy to arrive triumphant on May 15, 1760. Later in September, General Sir Jeffery Amherst deftly negotiated the final terms of surrender and the long marginalized provinces of New France passed to the realm of the ascendant British Crown effectively ending the Seven Years' War on the North American continent. Parenthetically, we found the son, Josiah Morss Jr., serving in the New Hampshire militia during the Revolutionary War.

Condition: Excellent.

Revolutionary War British Officer's Uniform Accessories and Great Lakes Indian Artifacts of Sir John

Lot # 463 (Sale Order: 14 of 602)

Revolutionary War British Officer's Uniform Accessories and Great Lakes Indian Artifacts of Sir John Caldwell, King's 8th Regiment

A group of items collected and used between 1774 and 1780 by Sir John Caldwell (1756 - 1830), Fifth Baronet of Castle Caldwell, a Lieutenant of the King's Regiment, 8th of Foot while serving on the American frontier in the regions of Ft. Niagara and Ft. Detroit where he was made a chief of the Ojibwa.  British military items include a silvered officer's gorget engraved with the royal crest on the obverse and a castle and inscription "Fermanagh," the Caldwell's home county in Ireland, on both arms. The gorget is suspended by a black worsted tape band laced with red wool.  Also included are a pair of shoulder wing epaulets made of silvered disks, the central planchet embossed with the same castle motif as the gorget, and mounted on red and white wool with a silver cord border, and a silver bullion, red and blue silk sword knot. Native American related artifacts consist of an Irish dirk-style leather scabbard with silk embroidered floral elements at the top and two pockets for auxiliary knives, one bone handle knife remaining with the group; a 12" long quill work band with trade silver, bead and hair tassels is attached to the scabbard's tip; a trade silver tinkle cone with ring present may be one of the two that Sir John wears as a nose ornament in his period portrait wearing Indian dress still in the Caldwell family's possession; and a skein of green wool.  The collection is housed in a 26" x 17" wood and glass shadowbox.  It comes with excellent provenance via the Caldwell family to the Arthur Speyer, Jr. then to the John W, Painter Collection (Painter 1991:168-170; Brasser 1976).  Includes copies of articles relating to provenance. The majority of Caldwell's artifacts were acquired by the Canadian Museum of History and  this group represents the few items still in private hands.

Provenance: Ex John W. Painter Collection

Condition: The group is very well persevered with light age toning.

Mid-18th Century Man's Civilian Frock Coat with Revolutionary War Epaulet

Lot # 464 (Sale Order: 15 of 602)

Mid-18th Century Man's Civilian Frock Coat with Revolutionary War Epaulet

Single-breasted crimson wool broadcloth frock of a middle class man, 1750 - 1775. Completely hand-sewn construction, with a 1" standing collar, inset skirt pockets with large scalloped flaps, deep pleated skirt side vents and a round cuff on the left sleeve. All cut edges are left raw in the tailoring fashion of the time. Buttons are brass and have pierced geometric pattern tops over a tombac base on a bone backing with wire shanks that pierce the garment and are held by strips of rawhide. All buttons are present. The upper body back, sleeves and pockets are lined in coarse natural linen with the body and skirt lined in middle quality crimson silk; a coarser silk of the same color used to line the skirt vent folds. The single epaulet dates to the 1775 - 1800 period and is of ribbed gold braid with crescent of bullion and sequins, fringed in 3" long galloons, with an applied 8-pointed bullion and sequin star which is backed with linen. The placement of a single epaulet on the right shoulder indicates the rank of a Captain; however, a single star is associated with a Brigadier General.  Wear and fading patterns on the coat indicates that the epaulet has long been associated with this garment, although it could have been added at any time before the documented history of the artifact.

The provenance of the coat traces back to the Sanborn-Johonnott family and oral tradition states that it originally belonged to John Sanborn of Salisbury, NH who moved to northern Illinois along the Fox River in 1837.  It descended through the family until donated to the Vigo County Historical Society in Indiana in 1967.  Exhibit history includes display at its home institution and as part of the Smithsonian sponsored 2005 - 2007 traveling exhibit "Clash of Empires: The British, French and Indian War 1754-1763" at the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center, the Canadian War Museum and the Smithsonian Institution.  It was featured in an article in the Winter 1970 issue of the "Military Collector & Historian: Journal of the Company of Military Historians" and was pictured in the December 2006 edition of Smithsonian Magazine. Provenance and exhibit related documents are included with the coat.

A very scarce early American garment with a rare Continental Army rank insignia that holds the possibility of further research and identification.

Condition: The coat has been professionally museum conserved with repaired mothing on the rear of the collar and matching fabric replacements made to damaged areas in the lining, some seams have been strengthened, all work skillfully done by hand. The cuff on the right sleeve has been removed. The epaulet has been re-sewn to the coat and has a linen stabilizer sewn over the backing material, the bullion is worn with some loss and several of the galloons have been stretched. Overall, the garment is remarkably well preserved for its age and rarity.

As time went by, the original caps wore out and their plates were attached to new caps, allowing the regiment to continue wearing the very plates that had participated in the battle until 1917.  This specimen dates from before 1877.

Condition: Moderate overall moth damage on the wool portion of the cap. Lacks lining.
