War of 1812 Silver Mounted Officer's Saber Belonging To G.J .Floyd

Lot # 43 (Sale Order: 43 of 761)

30" curved clip point blade having etched federal period military motifs, ivory handle with grooves on the right handle, the other side plain. Silver knuckle bow and pommel. Leather scabbard mounted with silver bands. At the top of the throat of scabbard the name G.J. Floyd is engraved in large script letters. The sword is consistent with the revised Army Regulations of 1813 that specified a weapon of “the saber form, and mounting of silver or plated” for infantry (see Peterson p.65-66).

This sword is attributed to Kentucky native Lieutenant Gabriel Jones Floyd (1795-1842) who was born into a military family and served during the War of 1812.

Young Floyd joined the war, raised 17th US Infantry at Washington City and was commissioned Ensign in April 1813, and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in October 1814. The 17th Infantry was recruited in Kentucky and organized at Georgetown under the command of Colonel Samuel Wells. Assigned to the Army of the Northwest, the regiment was split between General Hull and General Winchester, with each detachment taking part in see-saw operations against outlaying posts guarding the approaches to British-held Detroit in the vast wilderness of Northwest Territory.

More information about Floyd is available on www.cowans.com. Much information relating to the Floyd family is found on the Internet at genealogy.com

A superb identified War of 1812 era officer’s sword with significant family history.

Condition: Blade is gunmetal grey with some staining. Handle has a small chip out of the ivory at the pommel on the right and left side. Leather scabbard is good condition with some crazing.
