War of 1812 Silver Mounted Officer's Saber Belonging To G.J .Floyd
Lot # 43 (Sale Order: 43 of 761)
This sword is attributed to Kentucky native Lieutenant Gabriel Jones Floyd (1795-1842) who was born into a military family and served during the War of 1812.
Young Floyd joined the war, raised 17th US Infantry at Washington City and was commissioned Ensign in April 1813, and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in October 1814. The 17th Infantry was recruited in Kentucky and organized at Georgetown under the command of Colonel Samuel Wells. Assigned to the Army of the Northwest, the regiment was split between General Hull and General Winchester, with each detachment taking part in see-saw operations against outlaying posts guarding the approaches to British-held Detroit in the vast wilderness of Northwest Territory.
More information about Floyd is available on www.cowans.com. Much information relating to the Floyd family is found on the Internet at genealogy.com
