Maurice Braun San Diego California Oil Painting

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 1001 of 1250)

Oil on Board. Title is Outside of San Diego. 12" by 16" unframed, 16 1/2" by 20 1/2" framed. Provenance: From the Estate of Uvaldo and Isabel Sandoval of Taos New Mexico....more Uvaldo was the sheriff of Taos Pueblo from 1952-1954. Maurice Braun (1877 - 1941) was active/lived in California, New York / Hungary. Maurice Braun is known for Landscape, portrait and-still life painting. An established California plein-air painter in the Impressionist style, Maurice Braun painted landscapes reflecting moods of nature and his skill of showing the varying effects of light put San Diego into the national art scene. He was born in Nagy Bittse, Hungary, and immigrated to New York City in 1881 when he was four years old. He showed early art talent and interest and as a youngster, copying works of art at the Metropolitan Museum. From 1897 to 1902, he studied at the Academy of Design and then for one year with William Merritt Chase at the Chase School, which became the New York School. In 1902, he went to Europe, painting in Austria, Germany, and Hungary. He became a noted portrait and figure painter in New York but felt confined by subject matter. Then in 1910, attracted to the California landscape as a subject for his painting, he moved to San Diego and from his studio on Point Loma painted the French Impressionist influenced landscapes for which he became known. He was initially drawn to California because of an active Theosophical Society of which he had been a member since college and which espoused the merging of truths common to all religions. A special part of that religion was light as metaphor, a technique that he perfected in his painting. In 1912, he founded the San Diego Academy of Art and was its director for many years, although he returned to the East in 1921 and established studios in New York City, Silvermine, and Old Lyme, Connecticut. Several years later he returned to San Diego but from 1924 to 1929, continued to spend part of each year in the East. In 1929, he became one of the founders of the Contemporary Artists of San Diego, and he was also active in art circles in San Francisco and Los Angeles and exhibited with the California Art Club. He traveled and painted in the Southwest including the Grand Canyon.

George Dabich Sunlight Basin Wyoming Oil Painting

Lot # 1011 (Sale Order: 1011 of 1250)

Title is Sunlight Basin Wyoming. 27 1/2" by 33 1/2" framed. Condition Report: Unrestored, small quarter size area of paint loss in sky, some paint crackle as shown. Would...more benefit from a cleaning. George Dabich (1922 - 2013) was active/lived in Wyoming, California. George Dabich is known for West-historical genre, sculptor. George Dabich was born in 1922 in East Los Angeles, CA. Shortly he moved to be with his father in Alberhill, CA where he grew up. George was discharged from the Navy in 1945 after having two ships blown out from under him and returned to Alberhill. Jobs were scarce in those parts in 1946, so Dabich joined a friend heading off to Wyoming. Being that his friend was a gambler, they ended up in Cook City, Montana, which was a wide-open town then, where George took a job as a wrangler. After the wrangling job fell through, Dabich headed over to Cody, Wyoming where he took a job as a guide for an outfitting company. It was Dabich's guiding career that ultimately shaped his life as an artist and family man. On a hunt one morning in 1958, he went out to retrieve a couple of picketed horses. Not wanting to walk the horses back the half mile to camp he swung up on one of the horses bareback not knowing he was a bucker. Shortly Dabich flew over the horse's head landing on the ground in front of him. As the horse continued to buck, it lost it's balance and fell on him breaking Dabich's leg. Having no place to recover he was taken in by his girlfriend whom he soon married. To combat the boredom of recovery he took up sketching and painting. "Breaking that leg was the best thing that ever happened to me," Dabich said. A local restaurateur, Junior Kousolos, discovered some of Dabich's work in the trash and sold them to Senator Alan Simpson's farther, Milward, then Wyoming's governor, for $60.00 giving the cash to Dabich. Dabich had his first sale, and the artwork remains in the Simpson family cabin 'till this day. Kousolos soon opened an art gallery next door to his restaurant representing the artwork of Dabich, Bob Meyers and a resent arrival in Cody, Nick Eggenhofer. Dabich and Eggenhofer soon became fast friends and fishing buddies - although Dabich never had formal art lessons he learned immeasurably by watching Eggenhofer work. At the time of this writing Dabich is 87 years old, still painting, sometimes sculpting and doing some of his best work. He paints what he knows and his art is wonderfully detailed and accurate - a product of his intimacy with the wilderness and ranching gained through his many years of guiding and wrangling. Dabich's animals, besides being accurately illustrated, exhibit the critter's personality and reaction to specific situations. This ability is only achieved through real life experience.

Tarmo Pasto Three Sentinels Oil Painting

Lot # 1012 (Sale Order: 1012 of 1250)

Title is Three Sentinels. Oil on Canvas. 26" by 34" unframed. 32" by 40". Tarmo Pasto (1906 - 1986) was active/lived in California. Tarmo Pasto is known for Modernist-lea...morening landscape. Dr. Tarmo Pasto was born on July 27, 1906 in Monessen, Pennsylvania, of Finnish descent. He died on December 26, 1986. Tarmo Pasto was a clincal psychologist and artist, who taught psychology and art through the 1970s at California State College at Sacramento since the schools inception. He also authored a book on art, The Space-Frame Experience in Art, published in 1964. He, however, was mainly known to the world for introducing the works of one of his psychology patients, Martin Ramirez (1885-1963). Dr. Pasto was a psychiatrist for Ramirez in the late 1950s and provided him with quality art materials and also encouraged his artistic endeavors. The art of the insane was of particular interest to Dr. Pasto who would often use examples of it in his classroom lectures. Pasto was also very instrumental in initiating a number of Bay Area exhibitions of what today is considered outsider art. In the 1970's Dr. Pasto with the help of artist James Nutt, provided the first public showing of Martin Rameriz's art work. Thus Tarmo Pasto gets much of the credit for introducing one of the well-known Outsider artists to the world. He also discovered the outsider artist P.M. Wentworth and promoted his work. Dr. Pasto was a long-time contributor to the California art scene, as well as an art teacher and psychologist to many successful artists. Submitted February 2004 by Mark Jones. His sources included members of the Alumni Board of California State University at Sacramento.

Such artworks were done by others, and following is an attempt by the artist to clear up the confusion existing about these works: LEE REYNOLDS I as an Artist have done no more than 200 "Original" Paintings and Sculptures in my life. Lee Reynolds was simply a trade name. It was attached to numerous artworks and designs at Vanguard Studios. Vanguard Studios was the largest distributor of decorative art in the world at the time. Maynard Dixon Watercolor Cowboy Painting

Lot # 1018 (Sale Order: 1018 of 1250)

Watercolor on Paper. Title is Cowhand. 5" by 8" unframed. 13" by 14" framed. Provenance: Estate of Janice and Jack Decoursey (Mary Livingston's Gallery 2) Orange County C...morealifornia, purchased directly from the artist. Maynard Dixon (1875 - 1946) was active/lived in California, Arizona. Maynard Dixon is known for Western landscape painting-skyscapes, Indians. Born in Fresno, CA on Jan. 24, 1875. A sickly child, sketching occupied a lot of Dixon's time while growing up. As a boy he listened with fascination to the stories of the Old West told by the old timers. It is no wonder that cowboys and Indians were to become the main subject matter of his life's work. At 16 he sent his sketch book to Frederic Remington who encouraged him to pursue an art career. The Dixon family moved to Alameda, CA in 1893, the year the artist's first illustration was published in Overland Monthly. Dixon enrolled at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute, but the confines of a classroom were not to his liking and he remained only three months. In 1895 he took his first full-time job as an illustrator for the San Francisco Morning Call and continued four years later with the Examiner. By 1899 he was making regular sketching trips into the Northwest and Southwest, during which time he was exhibiting regularly with the San Francisco Art Ass'n. In 1905 he married artist Lillian West Tobey. A year later the earthquake and fire destroyed his studio and most of his early works. The Dixons then lived across the Golden Gate in Sausalito until 1907 when he accepted a commission from the Southern Pacific Railroad to paint a mural for their depot in Tucson, AZ. Afterwards he moved to New York where he continued his magazine illustrations. Upon returning to California in 1912, he abandoned commercial art to concentrate on easel paintings and murals. During the PPIE of 1915 he suffered a nervous breakdown and divorced his wife in 1917. He married photographer Dorothea Lange in 1920. This marriage lasted until 1935 and in 1937 he married artist Edith Hamlin. During the 1930s he did murals and paintings for the WPA. In 1938 ill health forced his move to the drier climate of Tucson, AZ where he spent his last years while maintaining a studio nearby in Mt Carmel, UT. Dixon died in Tucson on Nov. 14, 1946. Today he is internationally famous for his western subjects which he often signed with his logo, an Indian Thunderbird.

Oil on Canvas. Title is Summer Glow. 30" by 40" unframed, 38 1/2" by 48 1/2" framed. Minor loss to gesso on frame as shown. Provenance: Purchased from Dana Gallery Missou...morela Montana in 2008, Painting was exhibited on the China Exhibition. Robert C. Moore (Born 1957) is active/lives in Idaho. Robert Moore is known for Plein-air landscape, figure and still-life painting. Born in Burley, Idaho, Robert Moore's first days were spent on the banks of the Snake River. This same river and countryside have served as the focal point for many of Moore's paintings. Working in oil with brushes as well as a palette knife, he uses both hands to create paintings that, "reflect the endless movement in life." It was in high school where Moore discovered painting and received some of the first encouragement to pursue his talent in art. Undaunted by his partial colorblindness, Moore first attended The Art Center College of Design for a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration. He later moved on to Eastern Oregon State College where he received his B.S. in Art and Teacher Certification. Influenced by the styles of Dan McCaw and Willard Metcalf, Moore likes to paint on location. He often takes his four-wheeled motorcycle, equipped with easel and wet paints, onto country roads and mountain slopes. Moore's subject matter is diverse, ranging from the West Coast to the Rocky Mountains and often including a variety of figures and florals.

Philip R Goodwin Walking Bear Bronze

Lot # 1025 (Sale Order: 1025 of 1250)

4" by 2 3/8" by 2 1/4" Philip Russell Goodwin (1881 - 1935) was active/lived in New York, Connecticut. Philip Goodwin is known for Animal, field-stream illustration. Know...moren for his illustrations of hunting, fishing, and cowboy scenes, especially scenes featuring firearms, Philip R. Goodwin was from Norwich, Connecticut. By the age of eleven, he had already sold his first illustrations to Collier's magazine. He was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence and the Art Students' League in New York. He also studied with Howard Pyle in Pennsylvania. His works exhibit much of Pyle's earnestness and discipline, but are restricted almost entirely to subjects of hunting and fishing. In this limited area, however, he produced many notable pictures, the subject matter always convincing and dramatic in color. In his early twenties, he established a studio in New York and met Charles Russell, whose paintings of western subjects provided a great influence on Goodwin's work in that genre. Goodwin's interest in scenes of cowboys and ranch life is evident in Bronco Buster. The two men traveled together on several occasions, sketching source material for their paintings. Meanwhile, Goodwin appeared in such books as Jack London's Call of the Wild. Goodwin's pictures were also published in Harper's Monthly and Weekly, Outing, Scribner's, and Everybody's magazines, in addition to calendar subjects for Brown & Bigelow, advertising for Winchester Arms and the Marlin Firearms Company. He also illustrated African Game Trails for Theodore Roosevelt. Goodwin's interest in Charles Russell is seen not only in Goodwin's use of bright, vivid colors, but also in the romanticized subject matter, which appears to celebrate the bonding of rider and mount.
