Jesse W Henderson Montana Oil Painting

Lot # 656 (Sale Order: 656 of 1057)

23 3/4" by 35 3/4" framed. Jesse W. (Rocky Boy Chippewa-Cree) Henderson (Born 1965) is active/lives in Montana. Jesse Henderson is known for Native American genre, portra...moreit, figure. Jesse Henderson is a western painter who paints Indian themes to encourage interest and to educate. His images of the Lewis and Clark expedition were adopted by the US Postal Service, museums and corporations to commemorate the expeditions 2004 bicentennial. Henderson was raised on a ranch on the Rocky Boy's Chippewa-Cree reservation in Montana. "I paint what I know," says Henderson, who's now 40 years old. "From growing up on the ranch, I know horses and I know my culture. That's what you see in my work." Henderson had talent as early as the third grade, but passed on a scholarship to the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, NM, after high school to join the Army. "I was trying to find myself," he reasons. Henderson's introduction into the art world opened up before him almost accidentally. In 1994, his wife asked him if he'd make some paintings for the couple to give as Christmas gifts. The reception to the work was very positive and two years later Henderson began painting full time. Henderson has devoted himself to capturing the past and the culture of his people as well as studying the minutiae of other tribes pasts. In his zeal for accuracy, Henderson hasn't sacrificed artistry to dogmatism. There's quiet, plaintive beauty in what he paints, in the loneliness of the country, the fragility and resilience of the figures. Today, Henderson and his wife remain in Missoula, where he paints almost every day.

Ernest Berke The Hair Ornament Pencil Study

Lot # 666 (Sale Order: 666 of 1057)

Title is The Hair Ornament. 9 1/2" by 12". Pencil on Paper. Ernest Berke (1921 - 2010) was active/lived in Arizona. Ernest Berke is known for Western genre-Indian, sculpt...moreure. A sculptor and painter of western subjects and well known both in the Southwest and East Coast, Ernest Berke was born in Harlem, New York City in 1921 to a Romanian mother who designed clothes and a Russian father, who was a sheet metal worker. At six years of age, his father, who recognized his talent, encouraged him to pursue art. While working as an advertising illustrator for Sears & Roebuck for a number of years, Ernest became fascinated with the growing West, especially cowboys and Indians. A self-taught artist and anthropologist, Berke was a voracious reader. He met on a regular basis at a local New York City bookstore with a group who shared his interest in the West, and occasionally, Berke would also show his works there. When the New York Times reviewed his work, it was met with great interest, and he terminated his job to devote himself to his painting. His devotion to the West covers over four decades, completing more that 2500 paintings and nearly 80 sculptures, five of which are life-size. He has portrayed the North American Indian with considerable accuracy and sensitivity, having lived with the Northern Shoshone Indian tribe in Blackfoot, Idaho. He is the only Western artist to have been accepted to appear in the Kennedy Galleries in New York, and has been featured in the American Artist, Sotheby's, and Southwest Art. He has had studios in Long Island and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has written and illustrated two books on the American frontier and on Indians, both commissioned by Doubleday. Berke spent his summers in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he erected a 12-foot by 18-foot bronze sculpture titled The Buffalo Hunt. His winters were usually spent in New York City.

Harley Brown is known for Portrai...moret and animal painting, ethnic caricature, teaching. A Western painter and sculptor of figures and domestic animals, Harley Brown was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1939, and lives in Tucson, Arizona. His career made another leap forward when he received a call from Bob Lougheed to submit some of his work for the National Academy of Western Art show, where he won a gold medal for drawing in 1977. He is a member of the Northwest Rendezvous Artists, Helena, Montana; National Association of Watercolor Artists; Oil Painters of America*; Cowboy Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Cowboy Artists of America* since 2004.
