Thomas Edison Letter and Envelope

Lot # 107 (Sale Order: 107 of 291)

Hand written letter dated March 29,1880 from Thomas A Edison, Menlo Park, N.J., to Marcus Gardiner of Hadley New York. Letter is on T.A. Edison lined stationary measuring 5.5" x 9". Letter is folded in thirds. Hand addressed T.A. Edison Menlo Park N.J. envelope measures 3.5" x 6". Envelope retains original stamp and postmark and has been opened from the top. Research shows that Marcus Gardiner was an Industrialist from New York who owned the Rockwell Falls Fiber Co. on the Hudson River which was the largest paper mill in the U.S. at the time. He and his father in law had built a dam on the Hudson to provide power to the mill. The content of the letter is a vague response to a question Gardiner was asking Edison. All Edison correspondence is now housed at Rutgers University so it is possible that Gardiner's original letter to Edison still exists....more
