Genuine Cicero Al Capone Gangster Oak Bar 18'

Lot # 199 (Sale Order: 240 of 422)

This front and back bar ensemble was salvaged from The Wakefield Tavern/Sokups Hall located at 5036 W. 29th Place, Cicero, IL in January 1985, which was a well known proh...moreibition era gangster hangout. The bar was most likely made by Merle & Heaney MFG Co. of Chicago around 1905. It has been completely and meticulously restored and refinished. This beautiful, highly figured quarter sawn oak back bar measures 99" tall, counter is 18' 1” long, 22" deep and 44" high. The top cornice measures 18' 4" overall length and has original massive egg and dart molding and is decorated with wood composite appliques. It has raised oak panels underneath with 4 original decorative brass single bulb light fixtures. The cornice is supported by 2 handsome original quarter sawn oak columns with capitals that measure approx. 10" diameter and 43" tall. There are 3 gleaming mirrors with 1” exposed beveled and are illuminated by those 4 cornice lights, along with 2 original large decorative panels with applied wood composite appliques. The back bar base with 10 drawers with quarter sawn fronts and 8 cabinet doors with raised panels and has all original hardware. The side panels of the back bar base are raised as well. Front bar measures 18' 1/2" overall length, 29 1/4" at widest point and 23 1/2" at beer gutter. 3 decorative oak panels adorn the front also with matching massive original egg and dart molding separated by 2 large flat oak front panels and finished off with the original brass foot rail. Rail measures 16’ 8” long and 1 ¾” diameter. Has original end caps and 5 original brass support brackets have swing up supports for cleaning purposes. All damaged or missing elements have been carefully repaired or replaced and no expense was spared. Front and back bar ensembles such as this don’t often turn up, especially in oak and in this size, not to mention the incredible history of this particular bar. A large collection of memorabilia from the tavern is included with the sale. Original photographs of the owners and patrons, original ledger and beer purchase receipts, and several calendars from the 1940's. Found in the drawer of the back bar is an original leather blackjack and numerous bullet casings included, some spent bullets. There's even an original brass door handle backplate which has a bullet hole from the action in the Roaring 20's. Also included are original newspaper clippings showing the demolition and original snapshots of the building still standing and during demolition. Truly a rare opportunity to own a piece of old Cicero history. This bar is truly a piece of genuine Cicero prohibition/gangster era history. It was salvaged in January 1985 by the current owner from the demolition site of the Sokups Hall / Wakefield Tavern which was located at 5036 W. 29th Place, Cicero IL. This southern part of Cicero was known as “Hawthorne” which was near the legendary Hawthorne Race Track and the Western Electric Hawthorne Works. The racetrack was a weekly stop for Johnny Torrio and Al Capone and other members of the south side outfit. It is also known that on the way to and from the track, Capone, Torrio and others would stop by Sokups Hall/ Wakefield’s Tavern to visit their “good customers” of their thriving beer running business and gambling empire. The Torrio /Capone outfit moved the headquarters of their beer running and gambling interest to Cicero in 1923, as a result of William E. Dever, being newly elected mayor of Chicago. The change of the administration struck panic to the underworld prompting the move. Cicero soon found itself overrun by the underworld elements. The town leaped into national fame as one of the toughest spots on earth during prohibition. Cicero, with its industrial corridor along Cicero Avenue and with its thousands of thirsty employees and the racetrack with its gamblers, was a “gold mine” for the prohibition era gangsters such as Torrio and Capone. The town was alleged to have had 123 saloons and speakeasies, or “Thirst clinics” as they were called in those days, within the town’s borders. Torrio and Capone soon had the prohibition law looking silly. The town of Cicero was not “dry” but very “wet”. In 1984 the current owner of this bar made an effort to befriend the late Barbara Wakefield, the only human resident of the rundown tavern and dance hall that she shared with dozens of rats and cats. He would bring her cat food in exchange for her stories and in the hope that some day he would be allowed into her domain. She did share with him stories of the visits of the Capone gang and others from the underworld. In January 1985, during the demolition process of the building, many of the local “old-timers” who were still alive, came out to watch the demolition and share their own stories with the current bar owner, of the tavern /dancehall and their knowledge of the Capone/Torrio connection to the site.
