John has collected phones for decades and is a devoted member of the Antique Telephone Collectors Association serving as ATCA President in the past. This is the 2nd online auction for the Andrews Telephone Collection. This auction has 200 lots. The auction ends on Sunday, March 26th, 2023 beginning at 6PM EST. This is an ONLINE ONLY Auction. This is an unusual mahogany Western Electric wall telephone made by the British Western Electric/ Bell Telephone Manufacturing Co (BTMC) of Europe. From the information ...moreon the instruction card on the front; the phone may have been made for special requirements from the “Istanbul Telephone Company of Turkey”. There is a picture of this phone in Ron Knappen’s first telephone book on page 94. The phone is 18 ¼” tall and 8 ¾” wide at the widest part and 6 ½” wide at the top of the backboard. The backboard has small feet at each corner to raise the phone off the wall. The phone line enters the phone from the right side of the bottom box or a hole in the back board. There are small metal straps on the rear, one on the top and the other on the bottom, I assume the line wire ran through one of them. The transmitter arm and mount are very unique for a Western Electric as most of their parts emphasize quality and functionality rather than being ornate. It may have been a special request of the ISTANBUL TELEPHONE MANAGEMENT/COMPANY of Turkey The Western Electric transmitter is 4001 which is a Bell Telephone Manufacturing Company (BTMC) numbering, the full marking is: W20 _____ No 1 4001 The Western Electric ringer is marked: W-13 ______ No 1A 234 4005 A 1000 The coil resistance is 1000 ohms. The brass Western Electric receiver coils inside are marked: S-26 No 1A 4001 The switch hook was patented by Western Electric and was accepted by the British Post Office as a telephone standard. Subsequently used by most of the telephone manufacturers in their telephones in the British Commonwealth. Inside the writing shelf there are stamps in the wood above the wire terminals: L1 R E TR L2 There is an instruction card above the writing shelf written in Turkish. It roughly translates it to: ISTANBUL TELEPHONE MANAGEMENT/COMPANY Telephone Number 36.23 1. To call the center, hold the handset to your ear and wait for the operator to respond. 2. Please tell the operator the subscriber’s number in the order. 3. Hold the muzzle of the instrument very close to your mouth when you speak. 4. Never move the handset hook up or down while speaking. 5. Replace the handset after you have finished speaking, as you cannot be called if handset is not found. 6. For each type of complaint please inform 01---E 7. In case of any malfunction please inform 05---E The phone was used as a subscriber set in a common battery telephone exchange in Istanbul Turkey. It is a small unique telephone that is a great conversation piece.
