8" Rare Door of Hope Shanghai Mission Carved Pear Wood Head Boy Doll in Mourning Wear Dress
IN HOUSE SHIPPING AVAILABLE - detailed hand painted and carved pear wood face, arms and hands, in black robe and vest of a boy mourning his father, patterned pink under breeches and hand sewn cloth shoes -The Door of Hope, a protestant mission, was created in Shanghai or Canton, China in 1901 to help destitute children. The dolls head, hands and arms to the elbow are made of carved Chinese pear wood and are smooth as satin and unpainted or varnished, the hair, eyes and lips are painted and the body is made of cloth stuffed with raw cotton. The girls of the mission hand made each dolls clothing, an exact replica of clothing worn by the Chinese people. Door of Hope dolls are unmarked, though some dolls had tags that read; N.E. Branch Women's Foreign Missionary Society. It's believed no more than 50,000 dolls were produced. (info from dollreference.com)
Sterling Silver & Mosaic Inlay Zuni Sun Face Concha Belt by Myra Tuscon
{local pick up or in house shipping available} Myra Tuscon (1935-), who began work in the 1940s and is mentioned in most all the books. This Concho Belt is inlaid with turquoise, jet, mother of pearl, and spiny oyster, set in silver. The belt is signed Myra Tuscon Zuni on back of belt buckle. Belt is a black leather belt. Buckle measures 4 1/4" wide. and there are 7 Concho Medallions that slide on belt. These are 3 3/8" wide. This is a fine representation of her inlay work. Myra Tuscon represented Zuni artists in her era; she participated in the exhibit "Southwest Indian Arts II" held at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco in 1955. She is one of the most important early Zuni silversmith artists. That Makes This A Very Rare Signed Piece Of Art By One Of The Greatest Zuni Inlay Artist. You May Find A lot Of Zuni Inlay Works Of Art Attributed To This Artist, But This One Is Signed.
