Vintage Hansom Cab Horse Drawn Carriage from St. Augustine

Lot # 13 (Sale Order: 13 of 177)

This charming carriage needs some love. Interior upholstery in fairly good shape.. Exterior is white vinyl, and there are 57” Wheels. Housed in barn for several years, a...morend was used as tourist carriage. Compartment for battery to run lights & intercom. The Carriages we are selling were all housed and used at the Colee transfer station (mentioned below) located on the corner of Riberia Street and La Quinta Place in Downtown Saint Augustine. History of Carriages in St. Augustine: A horse and carriage provide the best way imaginable to negotiate the Ancient City's narrow streets, and it was in this way that Henry M. Flagler got his first look at the town he was to help so much. Louis A. Colee was the driver of the two-horse conveyance which took the financier on his first ride through the old town, and there is little doubt that what he saw on this leisurely carriage ride had an effect on his decision to spend millions on hotels and railways throughout the state. Colee was the owner and founder of the St. Augustine Transfer Company. In those days, carriages served the same purpose as taxicabs do today. They met all the trains and conveyed the tourists and their luggage to the big hotels. When the automobile first began to take over, it was a foregone conclusion that the horse was about to be phased out in St. Augustine, as it was in other parts of the country. Colee was quick to see that his carriages were ideal as a means of sightseeing and would be a unique attraction to visitors, so they survived. In time, many of them were owned by their drivers and passed on down from father to son. These drivers became famous for their unique rendering of local history as well as for their imaginative replies to all sorts of questions put to them by their clientele. Hansom Cab History General The hansom cab is a kind of horse-drawn carriage designed and patented in 1834 by Joseph Hansom, an architect from York. The vehicle was developed and tested by Hansom in Hinckley, Leicestershire, England. Originally called the Hansom safety cab, it was designed to combine speed with safety, with a low centre of gravity for safe cornering. Hansom's original design was modified by John Chapman and several others to improve its practicability, but retained Hansom's name. Cab is a shortening of cabriolet, reflecting the design of the carriage. It replaced the hackney carriage as a vehicle for hire; with the introduction of clockwork mechanical taximeters to measure fares, the name became taxicab. Hansom cabs enjoyed immense popularity as they were fast, light enough to be pulled by a single horse (making the journey cheaper than traveling in a larger four-wheel coach) and were agile enough to steer around horse-drawn vehicles in the notorious traffic jams of nineteenth-century London. There were up to 7500 hansom cabs in use at the height of their popularity and they quickly spread to other cities (such as Dublin) in the United Kingdom, as well as continental European cities, particularly Paris, Berlin, and St Petersburg. The cab was introduced to other British Empire cities and to the United States during the late 19th century, being most commonly used in New York City. Please Note: All items are sold As-is, Where-is, with no warranties or guarantees, expressed or implied. We DO NOT offer Refunds, Returns or Exchanges. All sales are Final. The barrel measures approximately 27.75” and is chambered to fit 16 GA 2-3/4” inch shells. This gun DOES require a background check. This gun and other high quality guns in this Auction are from a private collection and should be inspected in person to ultimately determine and confirm condition, value, type, grade, measurements, touch marks, and variations. We are not Experts on some of these rarer guns, so we have given possible models that they may be, but we have gotten multiple emails of different opinions on other possibilities as well, so please only use our opinions as a guide, and do your own research to determine what model you believe each gun is. Even the Gun Guide recommends that a gun expert validate some of these guns because of the slight variations that so dramatically change the values. ALL GUNS PURCHASED ONLINE ARE WIRE TRANSFER ONLY ~ NO CREDIT CARDS!!!! There is too much credit card fraud right now, and our consignor wants to make sure we have verification of who actually purchases the guns, and be certain it is not a stolen card, NO EXCEPTIONS! For the Antique Guns that Predate 1898: The law states that the specific gun must be made prior to 1898. This is NOT the Patent Date, but the date of manufacture, based upon the serial number. If we cannot find the date of manufacture in our reference books, and you do not want to have a background check, it is up to you to send us a link or copy of a reference as to what year the serial number of the gun you have purchased was manufactured. Otherwise you will be required to ship through an FFL and complete a background check. This gun and other high quality guns in this Auction are from a private collection and should be inspected in person to ultimately determine and confirm condition, value, age, quality, type, grade, measurements, touch marks, and variations.
