Rare And Finely Engraved Solid Gold California Hat Buckle, With Civil War Era Patriotic Motifs And S

2 9/16- x 1 19/32-inches, with curved surface and finely executed pierced center. Clasp mounted on back with pivoting catch. Left side of reverse engraved with script initials "MAG." Profusely low relief engraved obverse with angelic figure at top center holding banner on which is engraved "Union" beneath an arched motif of 11 stars. Stars 12 and 13 border "Union" at each end. Bottom of buckle with American eagle and shield motif and stand of U.S. flags. Panel at left of Goddess of Liberty with shield and American flag. Panel at right of Figure of Justice with sword and scales. Embellishments within decorative borders including vines, scrolls and floral motifs. Stippled background. The elegant decorative border is accentuated by finely filed and formed edging.
Condition: Fine. Mellow patina with minor wear.
Notes: Engraver appears to be the yet-to-be identified San Francisco artisan responsible for the engraving on such special California Gold Rush objects as the Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver pictured in volume I, The Colt Engraving Book (p. 354). The special Gold Rush decorative features on that revolver are signed by jeweler J.W. Tucker, including "San Francisco/Cala."

Scarce Large 18th-century French Flintlock Grave Robber Trap Gun

12-inch blunderbuss barrel wrapped with wooden panels held in place by two brass alloy bands. Charleville marked flintlock mechanism with brass pan. Iron mounting pin and tripping lever. Steel anchor chain. Length: 20 1/2-inches long. Sold together with associated wooden stand and Photostatic reference notes on the history of the trap or
Condition: Fair to good. Metal with dark age patina and scattered heavy pitting. Wood with wear and minor worming.
Notes: This particular type of flintlock trap gun was often called a "chicken thief gun" used to trap would be chicken thieves or grave robbers. These guns were often mounted on a base and either camouflaged or hidden from sight with trip wires rigged to be triggered by violators. The theft of human bodies from gravesites in the 19th-century for profit caused the rise in the use of trap guns to secure gravesites from violation. The thieves however, were often smarter by sending a man dressed like a mourning woman during the day to defuse the guns, thus allowing easy access for body snatchers later in the night. A rare and macabre firearm.

Lanyard ring and stud secured to bottom with beaded mount. Brass hinge to steel frizzen. Steel flintlock hammer pivots in slot of brass plate cover to bottom. Hammer cocked manually and released by 3/16-inch diameter button trigger. Slotted smaller button adjacent serves to release lid. 1 3/4-inch overall length. 1 1/8-inches high not including lanyard ring and mount. 7/8-inches wide.
Condition: Very good to fine. Mellow patina and light wear to brass. Brown patina to steel with light pitting. Some petals to silver flowers missing.

Barrel swamped toward muzzle. Open sights. Brass matchlock system with stamp on lock near stockband. Brass cover to pan. Brass ball trigger with curved brass triggerguard. Brass floral motifs on varnished hardwood stock, including in form of barrel pin plate inlays. Two brass barrel bands.
Condition: Very good. Brown patina to barrel, with pitting and spots of encrustation. Mechanism needs minor adjustment so serpentine will remain cocked. Stock with nicks, marks and wear. Missing barrel pins and one front barrel band, as well as ramrod. Pitted bore.

Condition: Very good. Brown, black and rust patina to barrel, with pitting. Stock with nicks and marks, and light wear. Light chipping beneath and above lock, and crack near eyelet above lock. Ramrod missing. Pitted bore.

Japanese Medium Sword With Elaborate Shibayama Inlay On Ivory Hilt And Scabbard

15 5/8-inch blade with 1-inch collar of copper near relief carved crossguard or tsuba. Hilt with scalloped bands of low relief carving, of vine and floral motifs. Areas of polished ivory with relief inlays of carved mother-of-pearl and other materials, in multi-colors, depicting aquatic birds, butterflies, leaves, flowers, and vines. The decoration continued on scabbard, with a 8 5/8-inch long relief carved mother-of-pearl dragon extending from bottom approximately half way up to just below lower of two relief carved bands. Each of the two bands with carved apertures allowing for wrapping or sash to secure to owner, one with lady bug inlay motif, the other with similar small insect, both finely depicted in colors. Pommel, hilt, crossguard and sections of scabbard pieced together. Overall length of sword, 23 3/16-inches. Overall length of scabbard, 16 1/16-inches.
Condition: Gray patina to steel, with scattered light pitting. Blade cleaned. Ivory of mellow patina. Low relief carved bands with brown and gray pigmentation. Ivory needs careful cleaning.

Rare Antique Miniature Flintlock Big Game Sporting Rifle, Signed By Cogswell, 224 Strand, London

.20 caliber. 4 1/4-inch barrel with patent breech, top flat engraved "Cogswell, 224 Strand, London." Lockplate engraved "Cogswell." Integral rear sight on barrel tang, and brass pin front sight. Decorative engraving on barrel including sunburst motif near center, and on upper tang, lock, triggerguard, buttplate and major screws. Steel mountings and ramrod, the cock with double neck and the triggerguard squareback. Pineapple finial to forward triggerguard tang. Varnished and checkered walnut halfstock. Functioning action. Overall length, 7 1/2-inches.
Condition: Very good. Gray patina to steel, with light surface pitting.
Notes: Believed made as miniature of 4-bore big game rifle for hunting Africa and India early in the 19th century. Steel cleaned.

.78 caliber, 38 1/4-inch barrel of bright steel, the top marked: Freeman London. British proofs. Banded breech. Lock marked: Freeman. Standard relief-carved, varnished English walnut stock with brass furniture and vacant oval wrist escutcheon. Marked: HI behind lower tang. Sling mounts. Steel ramrod marked SGS. Together with correct triangular bayonet, marked "2" at base. Twist-lock collar. Original black leather scabbard with brass belt hook and tip.
Condition: Excellent, unfired. Metal bright with scattered light wear overall. Stock excellent with light worming overall. Bayonet very good to excellent with light wear overall. Scabbard showing wear and light scuffing. Belt hook wired to scabbard.
Notes: Rare shorter version of the Brown Bess of the period. Believed only four of this barrel length currently known to collectors.

British Brown Bess Revolutionary War Flintlock Musket With Bayonet And Single Western Spur

.76 caliber, 39-inch barrel with British proofs. Lock marked PRITCHETT. Walnut stock with brass hardware. Left side of stock marked: 20 and V./BY/IM[within circle]. Ramrod missing. Triangular bayonet stamped: H/o/N-10. Sold together with unrelated single western cowboy spur.
Condition: Good. Metal showing dark age patina and scattered light pitting overall. Barrel locking pins missing. Stock with wear and scattered dents and bruises. Bayonet and spur with dark age patina and pitting.
Notes: According to accompanying documentation, this musket was handed down through the consignor's family. It originally belonged to Major William B. Gifford of the Third New Jersey Regiment from 1776 to the Fall of 1780. Gifford was born in Ireland in 1750. Sold with a notarized letter from consignor, attesting to the history of the musket.

.77 caliber, 38 7/8-inch barrel stamped: JPK/EXR/88 and breech marked: GP under a crown [definite black powder proof since 1637]; East India Proof [4 over a heart containing V/EI/C] and a V. Lockplate with rampant lion emblem of the East India Company and lock dated 1810. Standard walnut stock with brass furniture and sling mounts. East India cartouche on right side of buttstock. Steel ramrod.
Condition: Very good for this model. Metal with grey-brown age patina and scattered light pitting. Wood with age wear, small stable hairline crack in front of lockplate and numerous dents and bruises. Action good.

The scale model ship's cannon, having an 18-inch lathed solid brass tube, 3.5-inches wide at the breech and 1 1/4-inch bore. Hand-crafted wheeled truck of white oak constructed with blind mortise and tenons as with the originals and with scale hardware and wooden wheels. One of a limited edition manufactured in the mid 1990s. An excellent scale model no longer manufactured. Fully functional with cannon balls. Four scale cannon balls are included with this lot.
Condition: Excellent with light wear and age patina.

Bold and finely checkered deluxe walnut stock with sling mounts. Steel ramrod. Case-hardened buttplate dated 1832.
Condition: Excellent to mint. Retaining approximately 90-95% finish overall with scattered light wear to relief edges and some areas of faded case-hardening. Wood with excellent checkering and light handling wear. Excellent bore.
Notes: The Murcutt Snider manufactured in deluxe grade is rarely encountered.
