Rare Antique Chinese Bronze Field Mortar, C.1300-1400s

Lot # 1173 (Sale Order: 174 of 651)

4 1/4-inch tapered bore, 12 1/4-inch baluster-shaped heavy bronze tube with molded bands and spherical breech with vent hole at base. Mounted on a black lacquered modern plinth. These mortars were some of the earliest field guns made. Designed to fire either a single ball or a broad swath of projectiles, even in their primitive simplicity they could decimate a charging enemy at close range. Weight: 20.70 lbs.
Condition: Excellent with beautiful green age patina.
Notes: Mortar extremely rare, this specimen believed the only one yet encountered. The mortar was uncovered with a hoard of 14th century Chinese coins. Mortar may have been used in defense of the coin storage hoard. Such bronze cannon/mortars were sand castings, showing the sometimes peppered effect in the early pouring of bronze.
