Extremely Rare Transitional Prototype French Tip-up Self-extracting Double Action D.D. Le Vaux Revol

Lot # 1204 (Sale Order: 205 of 651)

Serial no. 14951. 9mm centerfire caliber. 6 shot non-fluted cylinder. 5 7/8-inch octagon barrel with high front sight blade. Right side of gripstrap marked "MR" and with number "2," visible when grips removed. Left side of barrel stamped "D.D. Levaux/Rtf." Right side of barrel marked "Acilp Fondu." Left side of frame with star over VC. Topstrap engraved "Donaghy-Van Egmond/Amsterdam." Face of cylinder stamped with JS within circle between two chambers, and Liege proofmark E/LG/* in circle stamped between adjacent chambers. Prototype manufactured in the white, without finish. Checkered one-piece ebony grip. Steel buttcap with lanyard ring. With data from A.W.F. Taylerson, The Revolver 1865-1888, and the French translation Le Revolver 1865-1888 regarding the Le Vaux.
Condition: Very good. Light surface gray patina and surface pitting. Some hand filing markings from original manufacture. Metal carefully re-cleaned to original in the white state.
Notes: Only a few examples believed produced, of which this is the only specimen known to collectors. The clever design of this revolver allows for removal of the grips by simply pushing forward the lanyard ring at the butt, allowing the grip to snap out automatically. Replacement is just as readily accomplished. The grips removed allows easy access to the spring and inner working parts. The left side plate, which is dovetailed, slips down for further field stripping and maintenance. The mainspring is then easily removable.
