A historic photo by Soule exists that depicts Reade as a young lieutenant, kneeling over a teamster who has been murdered by Indians, scalped, mutilated and left dead on the prarie. Reade was well known among his contemporaries as a very brave and capable officer. A Spencer sporting rifle and cased set of Colt New Line revolvers once owned by Reade recently sold at auction for $67,500 and $73,125 respectively. This sword was recently discovered and was no doubt a part of Reade's estate which became separated from the other weapons at some time in the past.

Illustrations: The owner was advised by a gunsmith in Pennsylvainia that the guns were probably made by Isaac Mills in Brookville , Penn circa 1831. This is a note from the seller. My Grandfather was a gun collector. He had a gunsmith and his family as patients. They were from the "Ohio Valley Area". He was, at times paid for his services with guns. The pistols in question were, I understand, acquired in that manner. I would guess he obtained them in the 1920s or 30s. He gifted them to my father in the 1930s or 40s. Dad gave them to me in the mid 50s. In the early 1960s I was living in Ohio and had the pistols cased by a local gunsmith. He told me the guns were made by a gunsmith by the name of "Mills", who made Kentucky Long Rifles. He said has sorces indicated Mills made about 12 pairs of Dueling Pistols in the 1830s. Since they were American made he felt they were rare. Appariently in the early 1800s most Dueling Pistols were made in Europe. The pistols have been in my family for 80 Plus years. Overall, and excellent pair of American duelers.
