American Fullstock Flintlock ""tennessee Mountain"" Rifle

Lot # 51 (Sale Order: 51 of 514)

Firearm..58 caliber, 43-inch unmarked round barrel with punch-engraved scalloped decoration. Open sights. Flintlock mechanism with roller frizzen spring. Lock marked: W & G/Chance. Full walnut stock with steel furniture, the triggerguard and buttplate with interesting and unique ""finned"" tangs. Silver heart-shaped wrist escutcheon inscribed: W.W.M. 1821. Wooden ramrod. Without the grace and charm of a true Pennsylvania rifle, this example does not have the traditional curvature found on Pennsylvania rifles and was probably made in the Carolinas or East Tennessee. This rifle is very sturdy and practical. The lock is English made as with many early American guns of this period. It is completely original and not a re-conversion.
Condition: Fine to excellent condition for this type of rifle, the steel with pleasant grey-brown age patina. Stock with age wear and showing several hairline age cracks in buttstock with scattered wear and period repairs.
Notes: The maker of the lock is William Chance & Son, Shops in London and Birmingham. Made four-barrel pocket pistols, duelling pistols and later percussion naval pistols.
Estimate: 4000 - 5000...more
