Scarce Burnside Third Model Breechloading Carbine

Lot # 176 (Sale Order: 176 of 514)      

Firearm.Serial no. 3175, .54 caliber, 21-inch round barrel with standard military sights. Marked ""M"" at breech. Blued finish. Martial blue frame and breechblock. Right side of frame marked: Burnside Rifle Co./Providence R.I. Saddle ring and bar. Walnut stocks with faint inspector's cartouche. Sling mount.
Condition: Excellent for this model. Barrel retaining over 95% finish on barrel. Strong traces of martial blue remaining on frame and lever. Wood excellent with minor wear and marks.
Notes: Third model Burnside carbines are difficult to find as 2000 were produced in the Civil War and were heavily used; production was discontinued until perfected in the issue of the refined fourth model. This example is exceptional for a Third model.

Rare Burnside Transition Breechloading Percussion Carbine, With Features Of Third And Fourth Models

Lot # 177 (Sale Order: 177 of 514)      

Firearm.Serial no. 1028, .54 caliber, 21-inch round brown-finished barrel with standard military issue sights. Breech marked: W/P. Frame with bright martial blue finish. Case-hardened breechblock, lever latch, hammer and buttplate. Saddle ring and bar. ""H"" inspector stamps. Lock marked: Burnside Rifle Co./Providence R.I. Upper tang drilled and threaded for a peep sight. Standard walnut stocks with sling swivel. This example, while appearing to be a third model but close examination shows that it has the breechblock with the hinged and pivoting feature found on the fourth model.
Condition: Excellent. Retaining approximately 80-85% finish with scattered wear and age patina. Faded case-hardening. Wood near mint with a few minor marks.

Merrill Balto./Pat. July, 1856/8350. Lock marked: J.H. Merrill Balto./Pat. July,1856./Apl 9 May 51-38-61. Standard walnut stock with brass triggerguard, patchbox and buttplate. Saddle ring and bar. Crisp GDL inspector's cartouche.
Condition: Excellent to mint. Barrel retaining approximately 85-90% finish with light wear and minor scratches present. Case-hardening thin and faded but present. Wood excellent with a few minor dents and blemishes. An exceptional example of this model.

Case-hardened falling block action with lock marked: Starr Arms Co./Yonkers, N.Y. Side hammer. Saddle ring. Standard walnut stocks, the buttstock with two inspector cartouches and inspector initials J.H. British WD Broad Arrow cartouche on right side of buttstock.
Condition: Excellent to mint. Approximately 95-100% finish with slight handling wear present. Faded but present case-hardening. Excellent wood with only minor marks.

Rare U.S. Sharps Model 1855 Breechloading Carbine

Lot # 184 (Sale Order: 184 of 514)      

Firearm.Serial no. 17422, .54 caliber, 21-inch barrel with original military ladder-type rear sight. Breech marked: U.S./J.H./P/H. Drop-block action with Maynard tape primer system with door marked: Edward Maynard/Patented 1845. Tang marked: Sharps/Patent/1848/17422. Saddle ring and bar. Walnut stock with brass barrel band, patchbox and buttplate. No cartouche on wood.
Condition: Very good to fine. Metal with grey-brown age patina and scattered fine pitting. Slight traces of silvered case-hardening remaining in protected areas. Rear sight needs ""V"" slide. Wood very good, showing a few dents and blemishes. Minor sliver chip to right fore-end.
Notes: Only 700 of this were manufactured and very few have survived as most were used in the opening days and weeks of the Civil War.

Condition: Fine for this model. Barrel and bands with smooth dark brown age patina. Traces of silvered case-hardening present. Wood very good with scattered minor dents and bruises. Bright bore.

Scarce U.S. Sharps ""berdan Sharpshooters"" New Model 1859 Army Rifle

Firearm.Serial no. 54716, .52 caliber, 30-inch barrel with pedestal front sight and ladder-type rear sight. Standard barrel markings. Three barrel bands. Drop-block action with pellet primer system and standard markings. Double set-triggers. Walnut stocks with faint cartouche present. Steel patchbox. Sling mounts.
Condition: Fine. Metal with mottled grey patina with scattered light pitting and spotting. Wood very good with one period crack repair to fore-end and minor dents and bruises. Old revarnish present. Bore good with strong rifling and minor spots of pitting.
Notes: Berdan Sharps are much sought after by collectors, primarily due to the Civil War fame of this unit. This very gun is pictured in Roy Marcot's fine book on Berdan's Sharpshooters. Author Frank Sellers discusses these arms on pages 71, 72, 73, 81 and 182 of his definitive book on Sharps rifles. A truly historic firearm.

Condition: Very good. Barrel retaining 90-95% brown finish with scattered light wear to relief edges. Frame and mountings with grey patina, showing minor pitting on lever and buttplate. Wood excellent with light marks.

U.S. Sharps And Hankins Model 1862 ""short"" Cavalry Single Shot Breechloading Carbine

Firearm.Serial no. 6083, .52 rimfire caliber, 18 3/4-inch barrel with adjustable elevation rear sight. Left side of frame marked: Pat???/1859. Fire-blued hammer. Serpentine breech lever. Saddle ring. Walnut stock. Brass buttplate. Sling mount. manufactured during the Civil War.
Condition: Fine for this model. Browning and fading of blue finish mixed with grey-brown patina. Minor spotting and pitting on right side of frame. Slight traces of blue finish remaining on the hammer. Wood excellent with a few minor dents and blemishes.
Notes: Approximately 1000 of these ""short"" carbines were manufactured and were used exclusively by the Third New York Volunteer Cavalry [see page 173, Sellers, Sharps Firearms] Flayderman states that some were used by the 11th New York Cavalry as well [see Flayderman 5F094]

Firearm.Serial no, 1575, .50 rimfire caliber, 20-inch round barrel with standard sights and single steel barrel band. Brass frame, triggerguard and buttplate. Frame marked: James Warner Springfield, Mass./Warner's/ Patent. Swing-open breech. Trigger-type extractor. ""L"" inspector stamps. Standard walnut stocks with faint inspector cartouche.
Condition: Fine. Steel with grey patina and scattered light pitting. Brass elements with mellow age patina. Wood showing a fine hairline crack and a few minor marks.
Notes: Approximately 4000 Warner carbines were purchased by the U.S. Army but nearly all were purchased at auction after the Civil War and re-sold in Europe; less than 200 survive today [see Flayderman, 9B-102].

Condition: Excellent for this model. Retaining approximately 95-99% finish with light wear to relief edges. Traces of case-hardening remaining. Wood excellent with minor wear and marks.
Notes: Only 1052 of this model carbine were produced and this example is unquestionably one of the finest Gibbs in existence.
