Nra Award Winning U.S. Martially Marked Model 1842 Percussion Navy Issue Pistol By Henry Deringer

Lot # 76 (Sale Order: 76 of 514)      

Firearm..54 caliber smoothbore, 6-inch round barrel marked USN/RP/P at breech, lock marked US/DERINGER/PHILADELA; brass mountings; oil-finished walnut stock. Made without rear sight. Numeral 2 stamped on left side of stock opposite lock. AJ on triggerguard.
Condition: Very good. Gray patina, pitting; stock worn. Replacement nipple.
Notes: This derringer won a silver medal at the NRA show in San Antonio in 1977. It was one of ten outstanding firearms receiving this award.

Firearm..54 caliber smoothbore, 8 1/2-inch round barrel, with US/JH/P on breech; 1849 on upper tang; lock dated 1849 and with US and H. Aston, Middletown markings; oil-finished walnut stock with U.S. Ordnance inspector cartouche SK and WAT on left side; inspector letter marks on various parts, including K on brass topstrap.
Condition: Very good to fine. Gray and brown patina to steel, light pitting most pronounced on barrel. Stock with nicks and light marks.

AMES/SPRINGFIELD/MASS; USN/1845 vertically at tail of lock; brass mountings; oil finished walnut stock with NWP inspector cartouche on left side; small letter stamp R on triggerguard and buttplate. Made without rear sight.
Condition: Good to very good. Gray patina, pitting, primarily on barrel; brass with mellow patina; stock worn and with nicks and mars.

Rare U.S. Navy Marked Model 1842 Percussion Pistol By I.N. Johnson, With Plated Brass Mountings

Firearm..54 caliber smoothbore, 8 1/2-inch round barrel, with US/GW/P on breech; 1849 on upper tang; lock dated 1855 and with US and I.N. Johnson, Middletown markings; plated brass parts, likely tin; oil-finished walnut stock with U.S. Ordnance inspector cartouche on left side. Anchor stamped on breech of barrel at top.
Condition: Very good. Gray patina, pitting. 60% plating on triggerguard assembly, 85% on barrel band and sideplate, excepting traces only on backstrap and buttcap. Stock worn.
Notes: Scarce example with U.S. Navy marking and plating.

U.S. Model 1817 ""common"" Conversion Rifle By N. Starr

Firearm..54 caliber, 7-groove rifling, 36-inch round barrel with open sights, three bands and breech marked: US/JH/P[within circle]. Belgian-type cone conversion. Bright-finished steel with case-hardened lockplate marked: U.S./N. Starr/1824/MidnCon. Standard walnut stock with steel furniture and patchbox. Faint cartouche present. Steel ramrod with brass tip. Sling mounts [see Flayderman 9A-244].
Condition: Excellent for this model. Polished bright metal with strong case colors on lockplate. Strong markings. Wood fine with only minor marks and wear.
Notes: Only 4020 of this model were issued in the 1823 contract.

Rare U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1841 ""mississippi"" Percussion Rifle, Converted To Merrill Breechload

Lot # 82 (Sale Order: 82 of 514)      

Firearm..54 caliber, 33-inch round browned barrel with two brass bands and three-position folding-leaf military sights. Rare conversion to case-hardened Merrill breechloading system. Breech strap with Merrill markings. Case-hardened hammer and lock mechanism marked: [spread eagle]/U.S./Harpers/Ferry/1848. Standard walnut stock with crisp JHK inspector cartouche. Brass furniture and patchbox. WJ markings on patchbox, tang and bottom of stock. Steel ramrod. Sling mounts.
Condition: Excellent to mint. Barrel retaining nearly 100% browned finish. 100% lightly faded case colors still remain on lock and breech mechanism. Wood is also near mint. Perhaps the finest 1841 Mississippi rifle in existence.

Brown lacquer finish. Case-hardened hammer and lock marked: Robbins/ & /Lawrence/U.S./Windsor/Vt./1850. Standard walnut stock with brass hardware and patchbox. Crisp WAT and LM inspector cartouches. Buttplate marked: U.S. Steel ramrod with brass tip. Sling mounts. Period leather sling.
Condition: Excellent for this model, retaining approximately 95-99% finish with slight wear in evidence. Hammer and lock retaining faded case-hardening. Wood excellent with minor dents and bruises.

Firearm..57 caliber, 40-inch rifled round barrel with ladder-type military sights and three steel bands [third band marked 124]. Breech marked: V/P/[eaglehead]. Tang marked: 1853. Lockplate marked: [spread eagle]/U.S./Spring/field /1853. Standard walnut stock with polished steel furniture and sling mounts. Buttplate marked: U.S./A/33. Stock stamped with numeral 19 in front of triggerguard. No inspector's cartouche.
Condition: Excellent. Clean metal with scattered wear and patina. Wood with only minor wear and marks.
Notes: 4000 of this model were produced, 1160 in 1853, 300 going to the Virginia Military Institute under order of President Zachary Taylor. [see Flayderman 9A-305]

Firearm..68 caliber, 31 1/2-inch octagonal swamped Damascus barrel signed in engraving and silver inlay on top of breech with elaborate scroll borders ""Sam Jung in Suhl""; crown over V proofmarks stamped on left angle flat of barrel breech; open steel blade rear sight; brass blade on brass base dovetailed at muzzle; richly engraved and relief sculpted front action lockplate with wild boar finial to rear of lock, and sculpted fantasy dragon hammer; scroll engraved barrel breech and upper tang; scroll engraved German silver mountings, including stag panel game scene on triggerguard; double set triggers; German silver wedgeplate escutcheon inlays; shield thumbpiece escutcheon of German silver; relief scroll carved and checkered walnut stock with elaborate cheekpiece; carved and checkered matching wood patchbox; sling swivel at front and stud on bottom of butt; brass-mounted wood ramrod. Horn fore-end cap.

Checkered walnut stock with German silver mountings and wedge escutcheons. Silver- mounted wooden ramrod.
Condition: Fine for this type of rifle. Barrel, rib and lock showing dark brown age patina. Triggerguard tang cracked. Wood very good with minor wear and marks.
