U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Carbine

Firearm.Serial no. 449679, .45-70 caliber, 22-inch barrel with hooded front sight and Buffington rear sight. Breech marked: V/P/[eaglehead]/P/A. Case-hardened low-arch breechblock marked: U.S./Model/1884. Saddle ring and bar. Lock marked: [spread eagle]/U.S./Springfield. Standard walnut stock with faint outline of cartouche visible.
Condition: Fine. Retaining approximately 85-90% finish with scattered wear to relief edges and buttplate. Vibrant case-hardening. Stock showing minor dents and bruises. Bright bore.
Notes: Flayderman classifies this carbine as a Model 1890 because it has two government alterations: 1) front sight cover. 2) a special ""high hump"" barrel band to protect rear sight. It is a Model 1884 with these improvements.

Leather military sling marked: Rock Island/Arsenal/E.H.S.
Condition: Excellent to mint. Completely original, retaining 99-100% finish with vibrant case-hardening. Wood mint with no wear present. Sling very good.

Rare U.S. Springfield Experimental Model 1886 Trapdoor Carbine

Firearm.Serial no. 543592, .45-70 caliber, 24-inch barrel with unmarked Buffington military type sights. Blued finish. Marked at breech: V/P/[eaglehead]/P. Saddle ring. Case-hardened low-arch breechblock marked: U.S./Model/1873. Standard martial blue hammer and lockplate. Unique, uncapped elongated walnut stock with wrap-around front sling swivel for convenience in sliding gun from saddle scabbard. No inspector cartouches.
Condition: Fine to excellent for this model. Retaining approximately 70-80% finish with scattered wear and light spotting. Breechblock with brown age patina. Traces of silvered case-hardening remaining. Buttplate with brown patina and minor pitting. Wood very good to fine with scatttered wear and minor blemishes including a tiny chip to toe of butt. Action tight and crisp. Bright bore. No cleaning rod present in butt. [see Flayderman 9A386].
Notes: Only 1000 of this model were manufactured in the 1880s and issued to U.S. cavalry regiments. This is an excellent example of those that have survived.

Case-hardened low-arch breechblock marked: U.S./Model/1888. Positive cam in breechblock, the firing pin screw visible from right side of breechblock. Martial blued hammer and lock marked: [spread eagle]/U.S./Springfield. Standard walnut stock with crisp SWP/1888 cartouche. Circle ""P"" and ""O"" cartouches behind tang. Conventional cleaning rod. Sling mounts [see Flayderman 9A-388].
Condition: Excellent to mint. Approximately 95-98% finish with slight wear to relief edges. Vibrant case-hardening. Excellent to mint stock with a few insignificant marks. Bright bore. An exceptional and probably the best existing example of the100 of these made.

Scarce U.S. Hall-north Model 1833 Breechloading Percussion Carbine Made In 1839

Firearm.Unserialized. .52 caliber, 26 3/16-inch barrel with open sights and two steel bands. 25 1/4-inch retractable ramrod-bayonet. Browned finish. Breech with NWP inspector markings. Case-hardened breechblock marked: U.S/S.North/Midltn/Conn./1839. Spur-type breechblock release. Standard walnut stock. Triggerguard tang with two finger grooves and hinged patchbox.
Condition: Fine to excellent for this rare model. Retaining approximately 80-85% finish with light wear to buttplate and relief edges. Stock with several repaired cracks and numerous minor dents and blemishes. Action good.
Notes: Approximately 6,135 of this model were manufactured. The U.S. 2nd Dragoons were armed with these for their initial service in Florida. [see Flayderman, 9A-271]

Firearm..64 caliber smoothbore, 23-inch round barrel with open sights and two pinned steel bands. Case-hardened breechblock marked: J.H. Hall/US/1839. Retractable 22 1/4-inch ramrod-style bayonet. Eye-bolt style sling ring. Spur-style breech release. Standard walnut stock with no inspector cartouches. Initials WTL lightly carved in left side of buttstock.
Condition: Excellent. 100% original, retaining approximately 95-98% brown finish with scattered light wear to relief edges. Solid wood with minor marks present. One tiny sliver crack on right side under frame.
Notes: 2020 of this model were manufactured at the Harpers Ferry Armory.

Condition: Fine for this model. Steel showing grey patina and scattered light pitting overall. Hammer marks present on breechblock. Breechblock retaining traces of case-hardening. Wood excellent with minor dents and blemishes.
Notes: This was the last Hall carbine made at Harpers Ferry. approximately 1000 were manufactured. All were sent to the 1st U.S. Dragoons for service in the Western campaign.

U.S. Hall-north Model 1843 Breechloading ""side Lever"" Percussion Carbine

Lot # 166 (Sale Order: 166 of 514)      

Firearm..58 caliber, 21-inch round barrel with open sights. Two steel barrel bands. Breech marked: S.K. Top of breechblock marked: U.S./S.North/Middltn/Conn./1850. Saddle ring and bar. Standard walnut stock with no cartouche which is correct. Steel ramrod.
Condition: Excellent for this model with bright metal and only slight wear and minor spots of pitting present. Wood near mint.
Notes: This is one of the so-called ""Fremont"" carbines involved in the scandal of early Civil War years; the ""Fremonts"" were refinished by W. W. Marsden; the barrel is rifled and finished bright with the brown finish removed. The caliber was enlarged from .52 to .58.

""P"" inspector marks present on numerous parts. Brown lacquer finish. Case-hardened breech lever and lock mechanism. ""Mule Ear"" side-hammer with Maynard tape primer system. Lock marked: Remington's/Herkimer/N.Y. Standard walnut stock with crisp RP inspector cartouche. Brass triggerguard with saddle ring. Brass buttplate.
Condition: Excellent to mint and possibly unfired. Retaining approximately 95-99% finish on barrel with slight wear at muzzle. Case-hardening faded but present. Wood excellent with only light handling marks. An exceptional example of this scarce model.

Firearm.Serial no. 689, .54 caliber, 18-inch blued barrel with 16-sided hand grasp section. Military ladder-type sights. British proofs. Case-hardened swivel breech action with Maynard tape primer system. Saddle ring. Lock marked: [queen's crown]/VR/Mass.Arms Co./U.S.A./1856. Trigger-type breech release. Standard walnut stock with steel mountings and patchbox.
Condition: Excellent as partially refinished. Barrel retaining approximately 99-100% of a reblued finish with minor spots of pitting present beneath finish. Vibrant case-hardening. Pitting present on patchbox and buttplate. Wood excellent with minor wear and marks.
Notes: 2000 of this model were made under contract for the British government in 1855 for use in the Crimean War but saw little service.

Varnished walnut stock with steel furniture. Crescent butt [see Flayderman 15-027].
Condition: Fine for this model. Metal with dark age patina and scattered light pitting. Wood very good with light wear and patina.

Exceptional Maynard First Model Breechloading Civil War Carbine

Firearm.Serial no. 2959, .50 caliber, Maynard tape primer system. 20-inch round barrel with open sights. Blued finish. Case-heardened hammer and frame. Tang-mounted Vernier long range folding peep sight. Properly addressed on sides of frame and on patchbox door. Standard walnut stock with no fore arm. Case-hardened buttplate and patchbox containing original Maynard orange patent date label, together with original roll of unopened caps for the Maynard system. No sling swivel which is correct for this model.
Condition: Excellent to mint. Retaining approximately 95-98% finish overall with minor thinning on barrel and one tiny area of spotting on right side of frame. Wood excellent to mint.

Left side of barrel marked: M. Case-hardened frame and lever with proper maker markings. Martial blue hammer. Lower tang marked: 1865 and 25215. Standard walnut stock with two crisp JM cartouches. Case-hardened buttplate.
Condition: Excellent to mint, retaining virtually 100% finish with minor thinning of case-hardening on lever and buttplate. Remaining case-hardening vibrant with color. Wood mint with crisp markings. A truly exceptional example of this model, perhaps the best in existence.
