California - Oriental Insurance Policy

Lot # 8092 (Sale Order: 101 of 506)      

A large and impressive insurance policy, dated 1899. Has a bold attractive title across the top reading "The Pennsylvania Fire Insurance Co. - Philadelphia" with three vignettes of the PA state seat and also, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. This policy is covering the business of Sun Sun Wo and Company in Coulterville, California for $2000. T he policy states it covers merchandise usually kept in Chinese stores, but does not include coverage of Opium, Treasure, Safe and contents and other items.

Early Montanta Territory Mining Certification

Lot # 8093 (Sale Order: 102 of 506)      

A pre-printed, 1866 document from Virginia City with title at top "Territory of Montana - Madison County Recorder's Office" certifying that a man has recorded a mining claim "on the Major Lode, 200 feet, located in the Hot Springs District, Major County" and is signed at the bottom. Has black on white printing with a fancy left border. The discovery of gold at Virginia City led to the creation of Montana Territory in 1864 - the first Territorial capital being in Virginia City.

Montana Stagecoach Waybill

Lot # 8094 (Sale Order: 103 of 506)      

A pre-printed Waybill - large title at the top "Virginia City & Red Bluff Stage Co." dated 1896 and listing passengers and express freight going from Virginia City to Red Bluff. The Waybill lists five passengers incluiding W.A Clark (probably the multi-millionaire Montana "Copper King", Senator, banker and railroad builder) with destinations of "Norris, Sterling, Revenue" etc. Also lists about 20 express items - mostly packages and boxes with fees and destinations listed. On the back of the document lists the name of the stagecoach driver "H. Weppler."

Notarized Statement Signed By Ash Upson

A one page, legal size, handwritten statement, dated 1885 from Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory. The document states that Frank Rheinholdt has appeared before him and that an account against another party is correct and just. It is signed by Rheinholdt - but the document is entirely handwritten and signed by "M.A. Upson - Notary Public." The Document has an embossed orange seal of Upson as a Notary. Includes biographical information about Upson.

Choctaw & Chickasaw Nation Land Patent

Pre-printed, one page, legal size document - title at the top says "The Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations - Indian Territory" and states that a lot in South McAlester, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory has been sold for $11 to a woman. It is signed on the bottom by Green McCurtain as Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation and Palmer Mosley as Governor of the Chickasaw Nation with embossed seal of both Indian Nations.

Handwritten Western Union Telegram

Lot # 8097 (Sale Order: 106 of 506)      

Dated 12/03/1879 from Robert S. Tingley, Helena, Montana Territory to E.A. Hayt, Commander of Indian Affairs. Tingley is trying to bid on providing 500 head of cattle to the Blackfoot Agency at $20 each. On the back it is noted when the bid arrived and that it was too late. Two post holes in upper left corner affecting one printed word and E in The Western Union.

Dated 06/24/1880 to Self, signed H (Henry) W. Taylor in Weatherford, Texas. Henry Taylor was a Texas Ranger from 1872 to 1873. In 1892 partnered with Charles Goodnight to start the First National Bank. Comes with a xerox picture of Henry Taylor and another with Taylor and his sons in the Bank.

A stock showing one of the early attempts to build canals that would bring water to a thirsty, budding Phoenix. Is signed by R.E. Farrington as President. Only three stocks are known to exist.†
