Train Robbery Poster

January, 1911. Issued by the Office of the Chief of Police, San Francisco. Missouri Pacific Railway Train No. 112 was held up and passengers in sleeper and day coach robbed between Leavenworth and Kansas City by a lone masked robber the night of December 25th, 1910. Description of robber is given and a list of property stolen, mostly gold jewelry and coins. 8.5x11".

Document Signed by Samuel B. Webb

This document concerns a soldier named Joel Doolittle's service in Webb's command. Samuel Webb rallied his men at Bunker Hill and was wounded in that battle. He was wounded again in the battle of White Plains and served as George Washington's private Secretary. His home was used by Washington and Rochambeau to plan the siege of Yorktown which ended the war! The war records of Joel Doolittle included.

Important Collection of Research Papers

Lot # 8177 (Sale Order: 188 of 506)      

From the Estate of Robert Farrington Elwell. The following are from the personal collection of one of the most prolific western illustrators of the last century. R.F. Elwell was born near Boston, in 1874. He went to see the Buffalo Bill Wild West and did sketches for the Boston Globe. It was W.F. Cody, himself, who first recognized Elwell's talent and invited him to come and stay at his TE Ranch in Cody, Wyoming. Elwell became the ranch manager in 1896. He continued to manage the ranch and the majority of Cody's affairs for 25 years. He was friends with many of the celebrities of the day and became a member of the Sioux tribe after becoming close with Chief Iron Tail. Robert died in Phoenix in 1962 and left this material to his second wife, Kathryn. Elwell is a well listed and well respected artist, illustrator and historian. Included in the lot are 1) handwritten notes on the Poney Express, a detailed historical account of the development and operation of the famous mail line, with notes of Maj. John Burke. 2) Package of notes on the Custer Battle. All handwritten and including 4 maps of the battlefield, 2 printed and 2 hand drawn. 3) The handwritten diary of Sergeant John "Johnny" Rumble, a detauled account of the encounter with APache Indians at and near Cibicue, Arizona. Aug 30, 1881. The diary was later typed by Kathy Elwell. Ruble was R.F. Elwell's cousin.

The Law of Freemasonry in Indian Territory containing the by-laws, rules and regulations of the Grand Lodge of Indian Territory - 1897. The title says it all for this rare little 90 page booklet. Names Leo Bennett as the Grand Master for Indian Territory (he was a U.S. Marshall). Also states that Indians can become a freemason as long as they have a good interpreter. Phoenix Printing Co., Muskogee imprint on the inside of light blue cover.

Half Tone Photo of Powhatan H. Clarke

Circa 1900. In this photo he is wearing his Medal of Honor, received during the Indian Wars. Included in the lot is also a copy of his citation presenting him with the Medal of Honor from the President, as well as an extensive biographical outline that notes that he drowned in the Little Big Horn River, Montana, when he struk his head on a rock while diving to rescue a soldier from the flooding stream in 1892.
