The Boston Chronicle, May 2 - 9, 1768

A volume 1 issue of this early colonial American newspaper in excellent condition. While European newspapers of this vintage are quite common, colonial American newspapers are very scarce, especially of this condition. This paper dates from the post French-Indian war era when troubles were brewing between the colonies (especially Massachusetts) and England.

Annapolis, Jan 4, 1759. Here is an early colonial paper, but it is loose at the spine with various chipping at the spine. It fortunately has very little loss of words. Pg 3 mention of: "....J. Amherst, commander in Chief of all his Majesty's forces in North America..." arriving in town. Some foxing as well.

Colonial PA Order to Survey

Order to survey - a very interesting, one page, letter from the Deputy Surveyor of Pennsylvania ordering a county resident to measure a tract of land by the "great cover boundary". †The letter is written to Nathaniel Walker by Deputy Edwin Lynde. Being a surveyor in the colonial period.

Indictment for Theft (2)

Lot # 8204 (Sale Order: 215 of 506)      

This two page, 1827, hand-written, court document, is an indictment against a woman named Mary Grady who stole five yards of Irish linen from a neighbor. Indictment was written by the Attorney General of Pennsylvania Frederick Smith. Also, included in the lot, is another indictment for theft for Christian Smith and Daniel Garriet of Bedford County, who on the fifteenth day of December, 1826 with force of arms stole a sheep of the value of two dollars from Mary Jones.

PA Indentured Servant Document C 1787

Lot # 8205 (Sale Order: 216 of 506)      

This is an incredible court document putting an orphan boy up as an indentured servant. "..by these presents doth bind apprentice to the said Zacharich Connell, a minior child named John McKee for the term of eight years. Zacharich is to instruct John in all of the knowledge and skill of a farmer and husbandman. A rare document, dated 1787. On the bottom of the page is the signature of Ephraim Douglas. Research shows that Douglas was a soldier in the Revolutionary war and spent his early life as a boy in Cumberland Valley near Carlisle.

PA Accusation of Theft Documents C 1797

Lot # 8206 (Sale Order: 217 of 506)      

The remains of a wax seal on the bottom of the paper shows the page of this letter. Dated 1797, the document from a Bedford County law firm accuses a Miller of stealing flour and substituting bran in the flour sacks. The letter is addressed to the constable of Hopewell Township from Thomas Thornhill's attorney Amos Evans. Included in the lot are four other letters giving more details about the case of the bran in the flour bags.

The document that was probably posted notifying the public of an estate sale in Bedford County. The document has a large printed title reading, "To all people to whom these presents shall come," issued by "The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania". Bears the signature of the High Sheriff, "Joel Mann." 18x20".
