Freetrapper Jebediah Peterson's Chest

Lot # 8302 (Sale Order: 312 of 506)      

A freetrapper was a non-company fur trapper. It was a title of which they were very proud. The fur trade boom lasted from the 1840s to the 1860s. Peterson trapped pelts in central Colorado; and this chest is filled with his personal belongings and was improvised from an 1820s doll chest. This was exhibited on a loan from George Peterson of Colorado Springs.

Texas Land Grant

Lot # 8305 (Sale Order: 315 of 506)      

Large 14x16" land grant, dated 1878 from Austin. Has a title across the top "In the Name of the State of Texas" which grants 640 acres in Floyd County. Gives the boundaries of the land which borders the White River, also mentions G.N.R.R. (Great Northern Railroad). Has black on white printing, black formal border, with an imprint at the bottom - "J.S. Penn & Brothers Printers, Austin". Is signed at the bottom by R.B. Hubbard as Governor (1832-1901). Comes with information on Hubbard's career.

Preprinted, 3x6" stock certificate, circle 1835-36, for one share. States the town site being sold has "Fourteen hundred and eight lots composing of said town, situated on the West Bank of the Neches River, in the County of Liberty, which will entitle the holder, his and her assigns, to all the benefits that may accrue theron, free from all and every encumbrance whatsoever....". The stock is signed by S.H. Everitt, as Agent for the company.

John K. Sullivan Handwritten Letter

Lot # 8307 (Sale Order: 317 of 506)      

This Indian War soldier discovered Arizona's Silver King mine! A one page, 8x10" handwritten letter, dated 1869, from Las Vegas in New Mexico Territory, to Lt. John Sullivan - asking about vouchers from the Couchas and Stone Road military agencies - stating that the pay is $40 a month for room and stable rent. It is signed "Lorenzo Lopez", but the letter is written and signed by Sullivan as 2nd Lt. 37th Infantry, as a true copy of the original letter he received. Sullivan has written this from Ford Bascom and there are two additional military endorsements on the back - it is also signed by Lt. Col. M.I. Ludington from Santa Fe and also signed by Captain G.W. Bradley from Fort Union, New Mexico.
