Savage Ale Advertising Sign

Lot # 8423 (Sale Order: 429 of 506)      

Oil on canvas, Savage Ale, Served by the Glass Here at Deadwood's Own Saloon #10. Signed bottom left, W.M. Kessler, 1875. In a Victorian gilt frame. Piece of paper points to a bullet hole. "Jane….., after too much drink shoots at Injuns with aim that stinks. On March 13, 1879, Calamity Jane shot this painting, the Injuns remain", At the back, U.S. Internal Revenue Certificate is pasted to the canvas for 1881. Received from the proprietor of Saloon #10 the sum of $20 for special tax on the business of wholesale dealer in malt liquors etc. State of South Dakota. (Canvas has some paint loss and some holes) 30" H x 50" L.
