1850 Letter Sent Via Steamer Panama

Lot # 8467 (Sale Order: 473 of 506)

A commission merchants letter sent by F.W. Macondray & Co, on October 30th, 1850 concerning the current market conditions for staples and goods in San Francisco. Addressed to W.F. Parrott, Esq, of Boston, the letter mentions H.W. Hooper and Co, E.D. Brigham and Co, the ship Delhi and a Captain Barnes. The significance of this lies not in the letter content, but rather in the fact that it was sent "During the Gold Rush era of California from San Francisco, in 1850 and more importantly that it was sent via that same side-wheeler, the Panama, one of the original three ships to sail around Cape Horn that carried the US mails and the California Argonauts seeking their fortunes in California. Copies of pages from Bancroft and Coburn's letters of gold are included in the lot.
