R. Ashmore & Son Smoothbore Fowler Converted to Percussion, #NVSN, 12 gauge, 42" smoothbore barrel, dark patinated finish, smooth walnut one-piece straight grip stock with pewter forend cap, brass pin front sight, full-length hardwood ramrod with brass tulip head. Iron hardware with scroll engraving, marked "R. ASHMORE & SON" at the rear of the lock. Mfg'd in the early 1800's. In very good antique condition, displaying a dark, mottled patina with roughness at the muzzle and breech, surface erosion and scattered areas of light pinprick pitting. Lock shows traces of original smoky case hardened finish, with 30%-40% coverage in light scroll engraving, along with the iron trigger guard, hammer, and tang. Rear section of the lock is missing a small piece. Stock is in good condition, with indentations and staining. Iron mountings are good with ramrod sleeves going to dark patina. Elaborate trigger guard shows a pineapple finial at the front end with an extended rear tang, showing some light to moderate pitting. Buttplate shows light scroll engraving with an extended top piece. Mechanically, the action functions well holding at half and full-cock. Bore is dark, showing roughness and pitting. Richard Ashmore was a noted lock maker from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania who began his trade in approx 1800, later incorporating his son into the business. Est.: $700-$900. (Antique)
