Very Early Engraved Sideplate Japanese Matchlock Rifle, #NVSN, approx. .45 cal, 39.25" iron octagon barrel. In good condition, displaying an even dark, uncleaned patina t...moreo the metal parts. Includes a brass trigger guard, rear barrel band, and brass floral accents to the action lever retainer pin, plus two retainer pins to the lock cover base. The 48" hardwood stock with beautiful grain patterns is very good, with a fissure along the bottom of the stock indicating two pieces were linked together to attach the stock to the barrel assembly. It appears there was space for a ramrod (not present) as there is a hole running the length of the forend that could accommodate such an important accessory. Action functions properly. In very good to near fine condition displaying silver inlay "FABRICADO ENEIBAR ANO D 1824" on the top flats of the rear portion of the barrel assembly, plus a gold inset into the bottom of the trigger guard stamped "U / S A / TO / ARE" over what appears to be two blade points. Also present are a belt hook & stylized iron ramrod. Finely checkered hardwood full stock is near fine. As noted above, the manufacture date is 1824 with Eneibar being in the Basque Country of Spain. In very good to near fine condition displaying a maker's mark on the left side barrel flat (partially covered by the stock) that appears to be "TORDU". The raised carved hardwood stock is near fine w/pleasing grain patterns. Stock is also beautifully decorated with an engraved trigger guard, butt cap, right side action securing plate, fixed blade front sight & two wood ramrod securing ferrules. There is also finely accomplished silver wire decoration on the rear of the grip. Other Special Features include gold washed engraving on the top & left barrel flats that also include what appears to be "Canon Tordu" in gold gilt script. Hammer and cock are flat type with two-line engraving, visible sear, and sear spring screws forward of the tail. Lock is engraved "TOWER" with "(crown)/G.R." and a partially visible "(lock viewer's)" mark. Stock is unmarked and has a raised apron behind the barrel tang and a flat side lock. Top, left side of the barrel is stamped with a crowned London Gunmaker's "GP" proof mark and a crowned "V" view stamp. Condition overall is good, metal has been cleaned, now mostly gray with light pitting and some areas of mild rust patina. Wood with a small crack behind the left sideplate, and a small piece missing in front of the frizzen spring. Otherwise, showing moderate age and handling marks. Top, left side of the barrel is stamped with faint proof and view stamps. Condition overall is good; barrel and lock assembly appear to have been cleaned with a bead blaster and are now a silvery color. Brass parts show moderate toning. Wood with cracks visible at the ramrod channel, at front of the trigger guard, and above rear of the lockplate. Additionally, there is a glued repair near the muzzle. Left side of the stock is stamped with the stock maker's name. There are numerous inspection marks stamped into the stock and brass parts. Condition overall is good, metal has been lightly cleaned, now showing spots of old patina and some light pitting. Brass shows mild toning. Stock is good, displaying expected marks from age and use. British 1796 3rd Model India Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket, #NVSN, .75 smoothbore cal., 39"round barrel, browned finish, walnut stock, no sights, with a bayonet stu...mored on the barrel 2.25"behind the muzzle. Includes a mushroom head iron rammer. Marked "TOWER" on the tail of the lockplate with a visible sear pin and spring, and "(crown)GR" with a Lock Viewer's mark in the center. Left side of the barrel is stamped with a proof and view stamp. There is a "(Broad Arrow)/BO" Board of Ordnance stamp on left side of the buttstock. Musket has a brass buttplate, trigger guard, sideplate, and forend cap, with two rammer pipes, and a tail pipe. This model features simplified decoration to the tang of the buttplate, front of the trigger guard, and ferrule of the frizzen spring. Banister rail stock has a raised apron behind the barrel tang and a swell to the forend behind the rammer tail pipe. Condition overall is fair. Barrel has been varnished and is now a deep black color and the lockplate, cock, and steel show dark toning with wear. Brass has a polished appearance with dents and handling marks to the trigger guard. Stock has a putty filled break across the barrel tang to the left side and forward of the sideplate. Action is a little stiff but functions properly. Bore with old rust but may clean better. Est.: $900-$1,300. (Antique)

Stunning Early Silver Mounted French Flintlock Fowler, Signed "Chasteau of Paris" on its 6" long round faced lockplate. The fancy 38-1/2" octagonal to round barrel, appro...morex. 65 cal., with ornate gold wash wedding band transition, has a series of 7 cartouches on the top barrel flat at its breech, showing some residual remains of its gold wash filler, displaying a smoothed German silver blade front sight. Barrel has drifted to dark patina with scattered spots of surface erosion at the left side of the muzzle. The very fancy and elegantly engraved silver mounts include the trigger guard, sideplate, and ramrod pipes. Tasteful relief carving surrounds the trigger guard, rear ramrod pipes, barrel tang, and forend molding. The original, segmented ramrod has a flared horn front end, with the back end set up for a jag. Cheek rest and buttplate areas are elegantly covered with red dyed leather tacked on over pillow soft filler. Leather shows age, with cracks and creases, it has separated in some areas but still looks great. Overall length is 54". Mfg'd circa 1760. Condition is very good overall. Est.: $3,000-$4,000. W&C Scott Pattern 1853 Rifled Musket, #NVSN, .59 cal., 39" barrel, blue and color case hardened finish, walnut stock, inverted "V" front sight and folding leaf rear sight with "V"-notched groove; graduated to 800 yards. Includes an iron rammer and period brown leather sling. Sling is in good condition, showing age and wear. A steel nipple protector on a six link brass chain is attached to the rear swivel. Lockplate has two line engraving and is marked on the rear tang with a "(crown)" and "1862/TOWER" under the nipple. Left side of the barrel is stamped with two proof and "24" stamps above a single view stamp. Right side of the buttstock is stamped "W&C.SCOTT/BIRMINGHAM/MAKERS 95 BATH ST". Condition overall is fine, retaining approx. 90% blue, showing some areas of moderate toning. Case colors on the hammer are muted but visible. Brass trigger guard and buttplate show moderate toning. Stock has impressions around the wrist and other scattered handling marks. Action operates and locks smoothly on full and half cock. A steel rammer is mounted under the barrel. Includes a leather sling, marked "BADEN". Sling is in fair condition overall. Breech cover is marked "WESTLEY RICHARDS/PATENT/(triangle)". Right side of the lockplate is marked "(triangle)1867/WESTLEY RICHARDS". Top of the barrel is marked "WHITWORTH.PATENT" to acknowledge the use of Whitworth pattern hexagonal rifling. Condition overall is good; metal has mostly toned to a brown color with spots of patina on the barrel. Brass trigger guard has toned to a darker color. Wood is fair, there are age cracks at the toe and additional cracks to left side of the forend, with putty repairs to left side of the wrist, bruises, and darkening. Nipple is good and the hammer and breech door operate smoothly. Bore with darkening in the grooves; rifling is good. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)

Original Deringer Style Flintlock Rifle with a 35.5" deeply rifled octagonal .50 caliber barrel, with a dovetailed brass pin front and diminutive fixed "V"-notch rear sig...moreht. The rifle has had its touch hole period rebushed with a lockplate that is signed "Drepert" at its center. Metal surfaces have gone to an even dark patina with surface erosion, expected minor indentations, and mars. Stock is dark stained walnut with indentations, and scratches consistent with years of carry and use. Brass patchbox has an eagle head finial with its beak pecking on its wing and includes a period flint. Buttstock ends with a smooth brass buttplate. Interestingly, the functioning patchbox release button is mounted on top of the heel, with a small 1" well completed repair at the toe. Overall length is 51". Condition is very good overall. Flintlock New England Fowler, in near fine overall condition, most likely made in Massachusetts by one of the fine gunsmiths for the trade where these types of rifles wer...moree quite popular, primarily for hunting and sometimes for defense. The 43" round barrel has a .70 caliber smoothbore, full-length wooden ramrod, brass ramrod pipes, with a worn brass blade front sight, making it usable for either ball or shot. The original flintlock is signed "Ketland and Co." who was an importer of locks while living in Philadelphia, supplying many of the northeast gun makers. This stock is very tastefully decorated with carving on both sides of the buttplate, around the lockplate and sideplate areas, barrel tang and trigger guard areas, and with a fluted forend. There is an attractive, decorative brass escutcheon plate in front of the comb. Barrel has drifted to a mottled dark patina with spots of surface rust, scattered light surface erosion, which is heavier in front of the pan. Brass hardware has taken on a pleasing patina. Overall length is 58". Mfg'd circa 1815. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)

Desirable Allentown, Pennsylvania Region Original Flintlock Kentucky Rifle, unsigned and attributed to "Peter Moll" of the famous Moll family of gunsmiths, who was well k...morenown for painting artificial stripes on the maple stocks of rifles he built. Rifle is still in its original unaltered flintlock configuration, with a 42.5" round, .64 caliber smoothbore barrel for use with either ball or shot. Barrel is fitted with a dovetailed brass blade front sight which is reduced and smoothed with age and wear. Barrel shows an even dark patina with surface erosion and pinprick pitting, deeper near the pan due to firing and powder exposure. There is an interesting oval etched into the top of the barrel at the rear. Stock shows indentations and scratches consistent with age. Brass hardware has toned to an even dark patina. There is a full-length wooden ramrod secured with brass pipes. Trigger guard protects a single trigger with finger rest. Buttstock ends with a smooth brass buttplate, which is proud at the toe, with a small chip missing. Overall length is 58". Mfg'd circa 1815. In very good original condition overall. Desirable Flintlock Kentucky Rifle Made in the Lehigh County of Pennsylvania, circa 1815, with a nicely figured curly maple stock, displaying lateral hairline cracks on b...moreoth sides of the barrel channel. The rifle is still in its original non-converted flintlock configuration. The long 44" octagonal to round barrel has a .50 caliber smoothbore, with neatly dovetailed brass knife blade front and fixed "V"-notch rear sight, showing wear and smoothing with age and use. The single trigger is typical for this region. Stock has a nice 2-piece brass patch box with an arrow finial, which is also typical for this region, displaying a pleasing taffy patina. There is a brass oval inlay above the cheek rest, secured with a single iron pin. Buttstock ends with a smooth brass crescent buttplate with functioning release button. Replacement ramrod is secured with smooth brass pipes. Barrel has a dark patina with scattered small marks and indentations, showing minor erosion and some deeper pinprick pitting around the pan from firing and use. Overall length is 60". Original Allentown, Pennsylvania Built Flintlock Kentucky Rifle, signed "John Moll Jr." in legible script on the top flat of the 42" long, .50 caliber smoothbore octagona...morel barrel, which is typical for this region. Barrel displays an even dark patina with surface erosion and light to moderate pitting along the left side, at the wood line. Front sight is a dovetailed brass knife blade showing reduction in height and smoothing with age. Rear sight is an interesting brass, folding leaf with shallow "V"-notch. The plain maple stock is finished in the traditional Moll family manner with a red violin finish, displaying indentations, mars and hairline lateral cracks with age, ending with a smooth brass crescent buttplate with functioning release button. The simple, attractive 2-piece patch box is finished off with tasteful border engraving. Nicely shaped and faceted brass sideplate has the traditional "Moll Family" arrow finial on its tail end, and this rifle is still in its original, unaltered flintlock configuration. Overall length is 57". Mfg'd circa 1810. Condition is very good overall. Est.: $3,500-$4,500. (Antique)

Buttstock ends with a smooth brass crescent buttplate, with functioning patchbox release lever. Ramrod is a replacement, with brass pipes. Barrel shows a mottled, dark patina finish with smoothed edges, indentations and areas of corrosion. There is a larger " scrape to bare metal in front of the rear sight. Barrel is decorated with crude punch dots around the sights and in areas along the barrel, with an even, dark patina with minor dents, scattered spots of erosion and dried oil, showing sharp edges. Full-length wooden ramrod has an old, brass cartridge case as a rammer and threaded jag at the opposite end, secured by brass pipes. The artificially striped stock (painted on), which is a Lemen trademark, has 3 oval silver escutcheons on each side of the forend, showing indentations and marks consistent with years of carry and use. Wrist area of the stock is nicely hand checkered, with a fancy, ornately engraved cap box in the right side of the buttstock, which ends with a smooth brass crescent buttplate, which has separated from the wood at the toe. Rifle also features double set triggers, ornate brass trigger guard, and twin finger rests. Mfg'd circa 1840. Condition is very good overall. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (Antique)

There is a crude screw-in peep sight at the tang. Lockplate is marked with illegible "SHMORE" maker's mark. Mfg'd mid-19th century. The rifle is in very good overall condition, with the barrel going to dark patina with moderate scratches, dents, and surface erosion. Lockplate shows light scene engraving and partial maker's mark, as described. Hammer is in the white and may be a replacement. The nipple is a modern replacement. Stock is in very good condition with indentations, scrapes, and small areas of wood loss around the lock. Butt displays a decorative pewter patchbox inlaid into the right side, with antlered game animal on the left side. Buttstock ends with a smooth pewter crescent buttplate. Lockplate is lightly engraved with game scene, no other visible markings. Rifle is in very good overall condition, displaying even dark brown finish along the length of the barrel with scratches, surface erosion and areas of dried oil. Edges are sharp with some heavier corrosion along the wood line at the lock. Lockplate and hammer display dull, smoky gray color case hardening. Stock is in very good condition, showing moderate to heavy use with indentations and bruises from years of carry and use. Brass mountings include ramrod pipes extended double finger rest trigger guard, functioning patchbox, and Scheutzen style buttplate. Brass hardware has taken on a dark, uncleaned patina. Hammer will not hold at full or half-cock. Double set triggers appear functional. Bore is good with visible rifling. Est.: $600-$800. (Antique)

Rifle is in very good overall condition with the metal surfaces toned to dark patina with the barrel showing a mottled dark finish with traces of old black paint mixed with dark patina. Barrel shows sharp edges. Lockplate shows moderate pitting and corrosion due to firing and powder exposure. Stock is in near fine condition with expected indentations and scratches. Buttstock ends with a smooth brass crescent buttplate, that shows a repair at the toe with wood loss. Action does not work with the hammer not holding at any position and will require repair. Alexander Ager was an Ohio gunsmith born in 1821. He built rifles on the family farm in Harrison County Ohio from 1848-1886, dying in 1898. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
