RARE DESIRABLE WALTHER PPK SEMI-AUTO PISTOL 7.65/.32ACP CAL. 3.25" BBL.
Lot # 215A (Sale Order: 230 of 615)
Make: Walther
Model: PPK
Serial #: 960026
Caliber: 7.65mm/.32ACP
Barrel Length: 3.25"
Low Estimate: 400.00
High Estimate: 500.00
The Walther Model PP and PPK contract with Rampart Lion were proofed with Crown N commercial test proofs on the right side of the slide below the ejection port, on the right side of the frame directly above the trigger and on the right side of the barrel near the end of the muzzle. There is no commercial proof marks on the chamber on these models. Caliber is 7.65. The country for which these pistols were contracted is not definitely known, however, most collectors believe these pistols were contracted for Czechoslovakia. It should be pointed out that the rampart lion was included in many national crests or insignias of various European Countries.
There are very few of these contract pieces to be found. The ones that have been examined by the author were very early Model PP's produced around 1930 and 1931. Known serial numbers are 751,838, 760,024 and 760,748. The serial number reads in reverse with the muzzle of the pistol pointing at the reader. The chamber of these pistols are finished in both silver and black. The pistol with serial number 760,024 shows a rampart lion on the chamber with the number "8279" to the left side of the lion, and the number "31" to the right side of the lion. The four digit number is unidentifiable, but probably pertains to contract number requested by the contracting country. The two digit number to the right of the lion should pertain to the year 1931. On pistol number 751838 the chamber shows a plain black finish with no markings. The rampart lion on this pistol is found on the left side of the trigger guard directly in front of the trigger. The number "3530" and "30" are found on the left side of the frame directly above the rampart lion on the trigger guard. The four digit number is again unidentifiable while the two digit number probably stands for the year 1930.
As stated previously, these pistols were of very early manufacture and have large ring hammers with no notches. They have wide safety levers with 90 degree safety wells. The finish is high polish with black plastic grips.
Model PPK's also have the same type rampart lion and numerical arrangement. They have the same commercial proof locations as on the Model PP, and are in 7.65 caliber. These Model PPK's are serial number 763008 and 949886. On PPK, 949886 the rampart lion is found on the center of the chamber with the number "793" preceding the lion, and the number "37" following. As stated previously it was thought that the two digit number following the rampart lion on the Model PP's referred to the contract year date. However, on this Model PPK the number is "37" which could very well be 1937, the contract date; but which seems to me would be some six years late in comparison to the Model PP's. I would tend to believe that the two digit number following the rampart lion on both the Models PP and PPK represents the numerical order in which each pistol was issued by the contracting government. In any event, there is still quite a lot to be learned regarding these contract pistols. To the collector these pistols can be considered rare.
This desirable Walther Model PPK semi-auto pistol in 7.65mm/.32ACP caliber with a 3.25" barrel is in overall fine condition displaying approximately 95% bright black blued finish to the gun's parts with a polished barrel. The checkered brown & black variegated grips are also fine. The markings are sharp, the action is crisp & the bore/rifling are fine. (C&R/PPT)
