Interesting Adams 1858 patent large bore double action revolver, by A. Francotte of Liege, Belgium, nickel plated, wood grips, American cased, with Confederate history. Bottom of the casing has a very old penned label stuck to it which is inscribed in ink pen, the label is partially missing. The remaining reaming writing reads: "This pistol belonged to a Rebel officer of one of the Rebel Gun Boats on the Mississippi River. The Rebel was run on shore when we helped the forts on the river, and the pistol was given by the owner to a farmer living there, by whom it was given to me at Fort St. Phillip , when I was in command of that fortress of Fort Jackson, Fort McComb, and of Shrimp Island and of all that district. The plating was done since." This label is absolutely genuine and of the 19th Century. Would be very interesting to research as the penmanship may be identifiable to the officer who commanded these posts. This particular pistol was obtained by noted old-time local collector Wing Houser from the descendants many years ago who had lost the military and family history. Pistol is of a very large size measuring approx 13-1/4" overall with 6-1/4 barrel, solid top strap, heavy octagonal barrel of approx. .46 cal, or 11.25mm, revolver is a 5-shot, double action only, with a military type plain wood grip and ring lanyard that is numbered in hand engraved script "480", and shows fill complement of Francotte/AF proofs. Pistol is in fine condition as refinished in the 19th century with good interior and sharp markings. There are slight areas of pitting and blemishes on the cylinder, about 95% of this old renickel remains. Pistol is cased in an American walnut casing lined in red velveteen in a partition style which is of the Civil War era. Casing is in original very good to nearly fine condition. A European flask is included, no mold or other accessories. A very attractive and rear Civil War outfit with a story yet to be discovered. (ANTIQUE)
