Lot # 19026 (Sale Order: 26 of 710)

The Jolly Jilter (Pathe, 1927). One Sheet (27" X 41"). This rare poster is rolled and never folded. It came from the collection of an apprentice at Morgan Litho from the mid to late twenties. Ben Turpin will be forever remembered as the cross-eyed comedian of the silent age. His comedy was broad slapstick, written for him by some of Sennett''s funniest gagmen, such as Frank Capra. There are nicks, tears, and pinholes on the borders and paper loss on the lower right corner. Offered here is a wonderful stone litho poster from one of his shorts, made for Sennett Studios. Lot # 19027 (Sale Order: 27 of 710)

Bonnie Scotland (MGM, 1935). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Hal Roach stars his most famous duo in what appears to be a spoof of the "Lives of Bengal Lancer," as the studio was steering them into more feature films. This was their third feature not counting their supporting role in "Babes in Toyland." Right after this film was made the famous team of Laurel and Hardy would never make another short subject again, but continue to work in 60 minute features. This lovely title card has a bend in the upper right corner, a pin hole in both of the left side corners and a small amount of foxing on the left border. All in all this is a very clean card. Lot # 19032 (Sale Order: 32 of 710)

Harold Lloyd Personality Portrait (Pathe'', 1921). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Labeled as "The King of Daredevil Comedy," Harold Lloyd is best remembered by many fans as the young man dangling desperately from a clock tower in the 1923 classic "Safety Last." His artistic achievements of the silent era are often overshadowed by two of his contemporaries, Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, even though he made more films than the two of them combined. Athletic and spontaneous, Lloyd performed his comedic daredevil stunts with grace and ease. In 1917, Lloyd created his most unforgettable character, one that was to remain a signature throughout his career. With round glasses, a straw hat, and an unkempt suit, this new persona was both the fool and the fox, bumbling imperfection that could cunningly outsmart the bad guys. There is fold line wear and small areas of paper loss. Professional conservation and restoration work performed on this poster have made these defects hard to detect and the post...more

Lot # 19033 (Sale Order: 33 of 710)

The Round-Up (Famous Players Lasky, 1920). (2) Lobby Cards (11" X 14"). This was Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle''s first full-length feature film. In 1913 he signed with comedy producer Mack Sennett where he rose to prominence while performing and collaborating alongside of Mabel Normand and Charlie Chaplin in Keystone Comedies. In 1917 he founded his own production company and even signed a promising protégé named Buster Keaton. Arbuckle''s success was short- lived however when he fell victim to one of the most infamous scandals in Hollywood. A starlet named Virginia Rappe died after one of Arbuckle''s parties and public outcry caused powerful moguls to blacklist the rising star. A prophetic scene occurs at the end of this film as the final shot shows Arbuckle, alone, saying, "Nobody loves a fat man." Very Fine-....more

Lot # 19034 (Sale Order: 34 of 710)

The Navigator (Metro Goldwyn Picture, 1924). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). At the request of his star Buster Keaton, producer Joe Schenck purchased an obsolete ocean liner for $20,000. Keaton wanted to use the boat as a prop in his upcoming comedy, but began production with very little plot in his head. Eventually he came up with the story of two wealthy, pampered young people, who, through a series of fantastic plot developments, end up stranded on a drifting, deserted ocean liner. This wonderful scene card features the great "stoneface" as the pampered hero taking a bath at home. There is slight border toning, one light stain at the upper right corner, and one pinhole. These trivial defects do little to distract, and the card displays very well. Very Fine....more

Lot # 19035 (Sale Order: 35 of 710)

Hard Luck (Metro, 1921). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Buster Keaton is considered one of the greatest comic actors of all time. His influence on physical comedy is rivaled only by Charlie Chaplin. An acrobatically skillful and psychologically insightful actor, Keaton made dozens of short films and fourteen major silent features. Each of these films was a testiment to the comedic skill of an actor who would come to be recognized as one of the most talented and innovative artists of his time. Out of all the two-reelers Keaton made, he said that "Hard Luck" was his favorite. He claimed that the great "high dive" stunt he performed in the film was the greatest thrill of his life. There are corner chips and some light foxing at the borders, otherwise the card is in excellent condition. This card is such a wonderful early portrait of the star. Fine+....more

The Passionate Plumber (MGM, 1932). Swedish (27.5" X 39.5"). This was a remake of the 1928 film "Her Cardboard Lover" that starred Marion Davies. This time it was rewritten as a Buster Keaton vehicle. "The Great Stone Face" stars as a Parisian plumber who is hired by a woman to make her sweetheart jealous. The film also featured the comedic talents of Jimmy "Schnozzola" Durante, who plays the wisecracking chauffeur. There is fold line wear, light staining on the borders and small tears. Lot # 19037 (Sale Order: 37 of 710)

The Cameraman (MGM, 1928). Insert (14" X 36"). Like many of the great actors of the silent era, Keaton''s work was cast into near obscurity for many years. Only toward the end of his life was there a renewed interest in his films. An acrobatically skillful and psychologically insightful actor, Keaton made dozens of short films and fourteen major silent features, attesting to one of the most talented and innovative artists of his time. After doing nine films under the auspices of Joseph Schenck and United Artists, he was offered a lucrative contract by the reigning power in film at the time, MGM Studios. Though counseled not to take the offer by Chaplin and Harold Lloyd, Keaton took the deal and his fade into obscurity is history. Offered here is the insert to the first film he made under the MGM banner, a film that is still considered one of his classics, "The Cameraman." We sold the title card to this film in our last sale and are pleased to offer this very rare and especially nice con...more

Lot # 19038 (Sale Order: 38 of 710)

The Circus (United Artists, 1928). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Charlie Chaplin both directed and starred in this comedy gem that has the "Little Tramp" running from the law and "accidentally" joining the circus as a clown. The whole circus soon revolves around their new star and his many adventures and narrow escapes, while performing under the Big Top. Charlie''s love interest in this production is a pretty tightrope walker, played by Merna Kennedy. "The Circus" won Chaplin a special Oscar in 1928 for, "versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing and producing." There is a corner chip, a small border tear, and light toning. Offered here is a wonderful portrait card which features a terrific close-up of Chaplin and the lovely Ms. Kennedy. Fine/Very Fine....more

Lot # 19041 (Sale Order: 41 of 710)

City Lights (United Artists, 1931). Pressbook (Multiple Pages). This Charlie Chaplin masterpiece tells the story of the little tramp''s love for a blind flower girl, who he desperately wants to help, and his sporadic relationship with a drunken millionaire. The plots come together when the tramp attempts to raise money so the blind girl can have an eye operation. Highlights include a boxing sequence with scrawny Chaplin climbing in the ring against a brawny opponent, and the final shot when the little blind girl sees for the first time. The talkie revolution swept the nation before Chaplin could complete production of "City Lights." He agonized over the decision to release the film as originally intended, in silence, which he did, receiving rave critical reviews. Light cover wear, otherwise the book is in excellent condition with the mailing sleeve included. Very Fine+....more

After conferring with son Frank (Zeppo Marx), who has been a student at Huxley for 12 years, he goes out to recruit two hot shot football players at the local speakeasy, but instead ends up signing Baravelli (Chico Marx) the ice man, and Pinky (Harpo Marx) the dog catcher.
