Alfa Romeo GT1300 Junior

Lot # 228 (Sale Order: 126 of 136)

The Alfa Romeo 105 series coupé, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaroof Bertone, was considered to be one of his greatest designs. Notonly as one of the best looking and handling classic saloon cars ofthe period, but the advanced specification with its five-speedgearbox, all round disc brakes, independent suspension and powerfultwin-cam engine still has the capability to embarrass many of itsmodern counterparts. We are delighted to offer this pretty Bertone coupé finished inits original colour of grigioindaco (indigo grey), coded AR735 andcomplimented with its Wild Boar leatherette interior. What isremarkable with this particular Alfa Romeo is how well thecoachwork has survived. A close inspection reveals the factoryspot-welds upon the rear wheel arches and panel gaps thatdemonstrate its condition and structural integrity. The doors stilldisplay their factory seam lines, often missing on lesser andrestored examples. Mechanically, this Bertone is in very good orderalso. The engine has recently undergone a rolling road tune thatresulted in nearly 108bhp being recorded. The gearbox operates inall gears, smoothly and easily with no baulking or jumping out ofreverse gear; once again, a common trait on lesser examples of themodel. On a recent test, the 1300 pulled very well belying itssmaller capacity, in fact, the Alfa Romeo 1290cc twin cam powerunit surprises many with its ability compared to its largercapacity siblings. Imported from Italy in late 2016, this AlfaRomeo Bertone Coupé has recently been UK registered and has an MoTtest certificate valid until January 2018. This fine and prettyAlfa Romeo automobile is presented with an attractive and temptingestimate; can you resist??

J.P. Mk. Ib 500

Lot # 231 (Sale Order: 129 of 136)

The 500cc racing fraternity can trace its roots back to beforethe Second World War when enthusiasts formed local clubs to competein amateur races in small capacity, lightweight cars. In 1946, theclubs amalgamated into one, the 500 Club, the emphasis being onmembers building their own cars. Many famous drivers started racingwith 500s; the most notable being Sir Stirling Moss. In the late1950s, the formula declined but in 1968, a group of enthusiastsjoined forces and formed the 500 Owner's Association. In morerecent times, and encouraged by the introduction of the GoodwoodRevival, the 500cc Formula 3 has flourished with many new and youngdrivers discovering the joy and excitement of this relatively lowcost sector of motor sport. From the early post war days, manymarques were born; the most well known being the Cooper 500s andKiefts; however, owning and running a lesser known car has itsbenefits and may certainly attract an invitation to Goodwood due totheir individuality. We are delighted to offer this 1951 JP Mk. Ib. 500 designed byJoe Potts, a Scottish Engineer, and Willie Rogerson.  The carwas similar to the Cooper 500 Mk. IV but with a more advancedchassis with longitudinal tubes; a design not adopted by Cooperuntil much later. It features an all aluminium coachwork over theoriginal-designed Joe Potts steel chassis. The suspension is of theclassic front and rear transverse leaf design with adjustableProtech shock absorbers on each corner.  In 1957 (please seeblack and white picture of 131 in 1957 at the Bo'ness Speed HillClimb) chassis designation 131 was fitted with a different style ofbodywork with a four cylinder engine; however, in 2009-10, VernonWilliamson built the car as you see it today which is very much hownumber 131 would have started life in 1951. A JAP 4B power unit, fuelled by a Dell'Orto GP race carburettor, was rebuilt by the muchrespected Jan Nycz in 2011 and is mated to a Norton AMC four-speedgearbox, an option preferred by many for its smoother gearselection. A set of Dunlop R5 racing tyres are fitted and safetyfeatures include a new set of RSA harnesses and a plumbed-in fireextinguisher system. Number 131 has been campaigned by the vendorsince 2011 in various hill climb and sprint events and has theadvantage of being complete with a number of spares worth severalthousand pounds. These include a complete JAP engine, a rebuiltNorton Dollshead gearbox, new clutch plates, two spare wheels andDunlop racing tyres, a Shackleton Racing built power starter, a setof Talon primary drive sprockets enabling a choice of ratioswhether hill climbing or sprinting and, most importantly, a period, refurbished, Don Parker Trailer with winch, ensuring easy transportto and from events and, due to its size, is easily parked, even ina single garage. Further items included are engine valves, an Amalconcentric carburettor, a set of carburettor jets and spark plugs.Interestingly, the ignition switch is the navigation light switchfrom a Supermarine Spitfire. Currently, JP 500 number 131 is set upfor the track and comes with a history file complete with eventphotographs from 1957, a history of J.P. cars by Vernon Williamsonand Douglas Turner (which includes this 500), 500 Owners'Association VIF registration and MSA log book. One of very few JP 500 racing cars on the current racingcircuit, number 131 provides a remarkably adaptable package, capable of not only providing the flexibility for various circuits, but is also great fun and surely a contender for invitation to thepremiere events such as the Goodwood Revival.?

Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Saloon Restoration Project

Lot # 232 (Sale Order: 130 of 136)

The first 'S-class' Mercedes-Benz arrived in 1968 in the form of the 280 S and 280 SE which were large comfortable sports saloons offering powerful touring capabilities and luxurious interiors with space to seat five occupants. Known as the W108/109 models, they were constructed on 108" wheelbase and the new S-Class saloons were much heavier than earlier models. The styling was updated using a thoroughly modern design featuring the attractive stacked layout of the headlights which was popular during the period. Although the 280 was usually powered by a 2.8 litre, straight six engine, Mercedes-Benz, rather confusingly, added a V8 engined 280 SE to the model range. The 280 SE 3.5 had a 3.5 litre, V8 engine and came with both automatic and manual transmission and power steering. These saloons were well equipped and extremely powerful. The 280 SE 3.5 would reach a top-speed of 125mph and offered effortless high-speed cruising mated with supple ride comfort. Between 1971 and 1972, Mercedes-Benz produced 11,309 examples and they have always been popular with collectors and enthusiasts alike. This Red 280 SE was recently subject to a partial cosmetic restoration which included a full respray. The interior is in good condition throughout however the vendor informs us that the bumpers could do with being re-chromed. Despite having been running recently this example has developed a fault after a replacement fuel tank was installed and is now sold as a non running partial restoration project. A 3.5 litre example first registered in January 1972, it is believed to have just two owners from new and is showing just 40,000 miles, despite evidence of some old MoT test certificates and service documents we could not, unfortunately, verify that figure at this time. 1970's Mercedes-Benz saloons are having somewhat of a resurgence at present, seen as ultra cool and a favourite of TV personalities and with a little bit of mechanical work this could be yours at a very attractive price.

Sunbeam Alpine Series V Convertible

Lot # 233 (Sale Order: 131 of 136)

Launched in 1953, the Sunbeam Alpine, a two-seat open sportscar, was the first vehicle from Sunbeam-Talbot to bear the Sunbeamname alone since the 1935 takeover of Sunbeam and Talbot by theRootes Group. Ken Howes and Jeff Crompton were tasked with doing acomplete redesign of the Alpine in 1956 with the goal of producinga dedicated sports car aimed principally at the US market. KenHowes contributed some 80% of the overall design work and, throughout its production cycle, the Alpine was manufactured infour subsequent revisions through to 1968. The Series V Alpine wasproduced from 1965 through to 1968, the final version having a newfive-bearing, 1725cc engine with twin Zenith-Strombergsemi-downdraught carburettors producing 93bhp.This 1966 Sunbeam Alpine Series V convertible looks attractivewith its red coachwork and contrasting black interior and ispresented in good order. The weather protection not only includes asoft-top, but also a hard-top for the more harsh conditions. Infact, we think the Alpine looks rather attractive with the hardtopfitted as well as its convertible hood down option. An overdrivegearbox means that cruising at higher speeds is more comfortablewhilst a set of Wolfrace wheels certainly give the Alpine thatperiod look. We are advised that the car was purchased from adeceased estate with a view to preparing the car for rallyinghowever, due to personal circumstances, this has not come about sothe car has become surplus to requirements. A small history fileaccompanies the car as well as, what appears to be a usefuloriginal factory workshop manual and a parts book. We are advisedthat this UK registered Sunbeam Alpine will arrive at the sale witha fresh MoT test certificate and is offered without reserve.

Volkswagen Beetle 1300

Lot # 234 (Sale Order: 132 of 136)

The Beetle is a true icon of 20th Century motoring and occupiesa significant position in the minds and hearts of drivers andenthusiasts across the globe. It is the longest-running and mostmanufactured car of a single design platform anywhere in the worldwith over 21 million cars produced between 1938 and 2003. The'1300' model was launched in 1966 and provided the biggest one-timejump in power output - by a whopping 25% - to 50bhp. The 1960'sbrought great strides in motorway development and Volkswagen'scompetitors were building ever faster cars to cover the tarmac. The'1300' was fundamental in ensuring that the Beetle was able to keepup with the modern pace. With tighter gearing and tuned for higherrpm, the nimble acceleration of the '1300' was also more than amatch for the later models in the form of the 1500 & 1600 andthese characteristics have made the '1300' one of the mostnostalgic and desired classic Beetle incarnations. First registered on the 13th September 1972 this very originalBeetle 1300 still retains the original Wolfsburg factory interior, engine and even the steel pressed wheels have all of the centresand nut caps. We are informed mechanically and electrically, everything is in good order, is an instant starter hot or cold andruns very well. The bodywork generally is solid with all steelwings. Although the underside is also good, the car has had anolder restoration and blemishes now show. Having both sets oforiginal keys, Bilstien jack, Blaupunkt radio, owner's handbook andVolkswagen stamped service book, this car has pedigree many Beetleslost years ago. It has covered just under 92,000 genuine miles in45 years. Before the current owner, it was family owned (It had 21main dealer stamps in the 1970's and 80's) and has three formerkeepers. The previous owner said the lady who was the secondregistered keeper asked the vendor to call the car 'Lilly'. Afantastic proposition for somebody wanting a tax exempt classicwith an MoT test certificate valid until 2018. Ready to be enjoyedfor the forthcoming summer months.?

The sight of rival manufacturers reaping the rewards of asuccessful circuit racing programme prompted Ford to renew itsalliance with engine builder, Cosworth, to create the Sierra.Assembly of the minimum 5,000 units required for Group Ahomologation commenced in June 1986 at the company's Genk plant inBelgium.  Based on the three-door Sierra bodyshell, the RSCosworth combined the standard 1,993cc Pinto engine's cylinderblock with a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, the firsttime the latter combination had been seen in a production Fordengine. Topping it off was a Cosworth developed, twin-camshaft,16-valve cylinder head fed by a Garrett AiResearch turbocharger, the latter being deemed necessary to achieve a competitive poweroutput for racing, which in time would amount to over 500bhp! Even in standard road trim, the Sierra RS Cosworth produced astaggering 204bhp, its Weber-Marelli engine management systemensuring that the resulting stupendous performance was deliveredwith minimal turbo-lag.   Needless to say, the standard Sierraunderpinnings were comprehensively up-rated to cope.  6,021examples had been completed when production ceased in 1992, andtoday the model is much sought after. This example, presented in blue with grey interior, was firstregistered in November 1986 and thus one of the first two-wheeldrive examples seen on UK roads. These highly desirable Sierra'sare rarely seen on the road these days and indeed this example hasbeen in a museum for a number of years until recently, the last MoTtest certificate expired on 10th July 2015. The currentvendor is reluctantly selling this iconic three-door hatchback dueto lack of storage space. Minor re-commissioning will be requiredfor D942 EDX, however these classic Fords have excellent car clubsto assist in locating parts and advice. Supplied with a V5Cregistration document this genuine RS Cosworth is veryrealistically estimated.
