1886 Tomlinson Studios Charlie Bennett Cabinet Photo. graded Good 2 and encaspsulated by PSA 3-21

Lot # 70J

Charles Bennett was a catcher and outfielder for 15 seasons for Milwaukee, Worcester, Detroit and Boston of the National League starting in 1878 to 1893 missing play in 1...more879. A solid and stand-out back stop and lifetime .253 hitter. Bennett amassed almost 1,000 hits and over 500 RBIs. His contributions led the 79-45 W-L Detroit Wolverines to "World Series Champions" status in 1887. It was his only World Series appearance but he made the most of it with 11 hits, 9 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. During his career, he set records for double plays, fielding percentage, putouts, and games played as a catcher. Very scarce 1886 Tomlinson Studios cabinet card featuring Charles Bennett. We can only speculate how few of these individual portraits were made. Today they are very rare. The presented 6-3/8" x 4-1/4" gem has a mount that shows some overall soiling and a small stain on the reverse probably from glue or tape from once being mounted in an album. The photo has some soiling and light wear but the portrait has remained string with a full range of tones and very fine details in the moustache, eyes and hair. A newspaper account confirms a photo session with the Detroit team in April 1886 at the Tomlinson studio. This makes this portrait one of the earliest known of Bennett!

Rare 1955 Spic and Span Milwaukee Braves Del Crandall

Lot # 75

"Spic and Span" was a dry cleaning chain based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin famous for their annual promotions that showcased the Milwaukee Braves. Their first promotions appe...moreared in 1953, their final promotion in 1960. By far, their rarest and most innovative promotion came in 1955 in the form of large due-cut stand up cards of 18 home town heroes. As with other Spic and Span cards, these are black & white but are made of thick card stock and all measure up to 8" wide and 8" tall. Between the need for die-cutting, removing the backgrounds and then folding portions to allow the impressive mini-statues to stand, high grade examples are almost impossible. Overall this set is so rare an example in any condition is missing from even advanced type-card collections. Offered is a very well-preserved copy of Braves catcher Del Crandall. Measuring 7-7/8" x 7-3/4" at its tallest and widest points. Thankfully this beauty has just a few faults, none that greatly impact visual appeal. There are three creases, all of which affect the base portion, some very slight rough spots along his shoulder and some tape staining on the reverse (at his head). The delicate tab is still fully intact. This card was obviously taped down, probably as part of a display, which could explain why it has suffered so little from use and handling.
