Mauser Model 98 Custom Sporter 8mm/06 SN: 6289

One more gun for the cheap brother-in-law who doesn't want to use his good gun in the rain or snow. A World War I Model 98 Mauser with a pretty nice commercial stock. All the necessary work has been done to allow a conventionally mounted scope, but the rest of the metal retains the glossy black paint that the French insisted upon applying to captured enemy weapons in World War II. Rechambered to 8mm/06, it is very accurate and has a great bore. Complete with 1.5-4.5X Bushnell scope. Missing rear sight leaf. This gun featured in Precision Shooting, June, 2012, and March, 2006.
Spanish Mauser Model 1916 Custom Rifle .308 Win SN: 17531

Another "brother-in-law gun" to loan when he really wants to use one of your nice rifles. Model 1916 Spanish Mauser in .308 Win. The military barrel has been nicely tapered and has been cut to 20". A Dayton Traister cock-on-opening kit has been fitted up to the gun and a Bushnell 1.5-4.5X scope is present. All in a fairly well done cut down military stock. Bore is excellent.
Argentine Model 1909 Mauser Custom Sporter .30-06 SN: 003280

Another "brother-in-law gun" to loan him after he left your Winchester outside for a week last year. A model 1909 Argentine barrel and receiver have been set into a "sporterized" military stock. Strangely, it is in .30-06, and the bore is actually .308". Shoots very well and would be a great platform for a genuinely nice sporter. The bore is excellent, metal is reasonable and the stock is as to be expected.
Japanese Arisaka Type 38 Rifle Custom Sporter 7x57 Ackley Improved SN: 8476

A gun to loan your brother-in-law when he comes over to hunt deer. Japanese Type 38 with (believe it or not) a 19" stainless Hart barrel chambered for the 7 x 57 Ackley Improved. A semifinished Boyd's stock and a four power Redfield scope have been added. Very good for what it is.

Here's what you get when you add a $10,000.00 gun and a $5,000.00 "name". The rifle's receiver is a fully-engraved Heeren action made by Max Heim in Suhl, Germany. The stocks are two pieces of highly figured dark stained Myrtle wood and the barrel is a 28" varmint weight Ackley barrel chambered for his exotic .224 Ackley Belted Express. This was one of the Ackley Hightower series of cases based on a belted (swaged) .30-06 case. (It is now much simpler to form these cases from .22-250.) The stock was made in 1949 by Russell Hightower who was Ackley's stocker and the Hightower in the cartridge's name. It bears his initials in the fore end. The fore end tip and the pistol grip cap are rosewood, the butt plate is a case-colored Niedner type. All metal is almost 100%, as is the bore and the stocks. Also present is a 10X Unertl scope of the same vintage. Unfortunately what you get when you add $10,000.00 to $5,000.00 is neither. Includes about $250.00 in CH/4-D Custom reloading and forming dies. The gun is fully documented by the previous owner who was one of Ackley's employees at the time the gun was made.

Stegall FN-based Sporting Rifle 6.5mm-.270 SN: WP4585

This is a beautiful FN-based sporting rifle made by master gun maker Keith Stegall for writer, hunter and benchrest champ Warren Page in 1960 (documented). The stock is a nice piece oF English Walnut with Stegall's usual outstanding multi-point checkering and unbelievably fine inletting. The trigger is a Sako, the floor plate is hinged, the pistol grip is checkered steel and there are case-colored and engraved heel and toe plates surrounding checkered wood. The pistol grip cap is dated 6-22-60, the barrel is stamped "K. Stegall 6.5.270" and the stock is stamped "K. Stegall". A period Weaver KV scope is present. There are very slight signs of hunting use, but overall, the gun is excellent throughout. It is also very accurate. A superb example of a great rifle with a fine pedigree and it comes with custom RCBS dies. This gun featured in The Accurate Rifle, June, 2001.
Sako L61R Custom Rifle .300 Wby Mag SN: 44837

A fine custom Sako-actioned rifle. This one is in .300 Weatherby Magnum with a very light- tapered 24 1/2" barrel. The Winslow-style stock could be described as plain ugly, but it shows its true beauty when the rifle is thrown to the shoulder and it comes up like a fine double. The stock sports skipline checkering as well as a rosewood forend tip and pistol grip cap. The rifle is far more accurate than would be expected, and I made my longest one-shot kill on a big game animal with this gun. Very minor hunting wear, but all excellent in and out. Scope pictured is not included. This gun featured in Precision Shooting, February, 2004.
Persian Model 1930 Mauser Custom Sporter 8x57S SN: 4375-2

An interesting gun for the brother-in-law who you actually like. A sporterized model 1930 Persian Mauser carbine with the original 18" 8 x 57S barrel. The military stock has been nicely sporterized and has a very extensive amount of reasonably good checkering complete with ribbons and fleur-de-lis. There is a Lyman receiver sight. Overall excellent in and out. Farsi serial number translated to english.
Mauser Sporting Rifle 8x57J Improved SN: 124850

Here is a genuine Oberndorf Mauser sporting rifle; that is the good news. While all there, functional and safe, virtually all aspects have been reworked. There is a high-gloss blue over much-polished metal, a high-gloss varnished stock with a bit of wood missing along the forend and the checkering has been better days. Still, all parts are original, except possibly the bolt handle and scope bases and it has the lever release floor plate, double-set triggers and a 24" round barrel with all original sights. The bore is excellent but has been rechambered for the 8 x 57J Improved. In a quirk of Fate, it is consecutive to a rifle pictured in Speed, Schmidt & Hermann's book on original Oberndorf sporters. Scope not included. This gun featured in Precision Shooting, March, 2006.
Shilling M-88 Commission Rifle Sporter 8x57J SN: 29273

V. Chr. Shilling M-88 German Commission rifle sporter in 8x57J. It has a 22" octagonal barrel, double-set triggers, a stippled receiver ring, flat bolt handle, and original checkered stock fittings. The metal has been excellently redone somewhere along the line. The bore is excellent. There is one standing and one folding rear sight. This is a nice, light (7lbs.) old German sporter.
Custom Mauser M98 Small Ring Sporter 9x57 Imporved SN: 4449

Mauser small ring M-98 Custom chambered for the 9 x 57 Improved, a ballistic twin of the .35 Whelen. Full-length cherry wood stock which was cracked behind the tang, repaired and checkered. Niedner-type butt plate and pistol grip cap, both checkered. Gun includes a 1.75 - 5 X 20 Tasco World Class scope.
Mashburn Arms FN Sporter .270 Mag SN: 8848

Here's one that has me baffled. The barrel says "Mashburn Arms Co. 270 Magnum". (This is their proprietary cartridge based on a 2 1/2" belted case.) However, the stock looks like nothing I have ever seen come out of the Mashburn operation. What is on the rifle now has been exactly and expertly duplicated from the original which was split, repaired and camo painted. The original trap door steel butt plate has been retained. The figure in the butt stock is spectacular. The receiver is an FN. All metal retains 100% of satin blue and the uncheckered stock is perfect, as is the bore. The reason I am baffled is that the serial number is consecutive to a previously owned 100% pure Mashburn Arms 7mm Super Mag!
Husqvarna Custom Full-Stock Sporter .260 AAR SN: 20995

Custom full-stocked Husqvarna sporter. (This is the small-ring commercial M-98 style receiver from the 1960s.) Semi-fancy American Walnut stock chambered for the .260 AAR (also known as the 6.5 x 257 Improved as made famous by the Apex Rifle Company.) Weighs 7 lbs., 2 oz. with a 1.5 - 4 X 32 Alpen scope. Overall excellent condition with a checkered Niedner-styled butt plate and pistol grip cap. PLEASE NOTE: This rifle is shown with a Leupold scope affixed. That scope is no longer on this rifle. The scope that is currently on the rifle is the Alpen Kodiak 1.5-4.5x scope. The Leupold scope is not included with this rifle.
Mauser Model 98 Custom Sporter .360 Imperial Magnum SN: 5947

A masterpiece of the metalworker's skills. Carl Chiocca took a military Model 98 Mauser receiver and made the finest custom rifle I have ever owned. From lengthening the action (from the rear, as it should be done) to making all the bottom metal, including the three-faceted floor plate, to filling in the thumb slot and shaping the 26" octagonal Douglas barrel, he did it all. He also chambered for the very powerful .360 Imperial Magnum. (A proprietary round from a Canadian company which preceded the Remington Ultra Mag cartridges by a good 10 years, this is what a 35 Remington Ultra Mag would be if Remington made such a thing.) Complete with a detachable octagonal muzzle break. The stock is Exhibition Myrtle wood crafted by Randy Seitzinger and checkered in a very elaborate ribboned pattern. All metal work is satin blued and it, as well as the stock and bore, are in almost new condition. Scope not included. This gun featured in The Accurate Rifle, December, 2001.

Swedish Model 94/17 Carbine 7x57 SN: 28820

A very rare Swedish Model 94/17 carbine (Carl Gustafstadts, 1904), BUT IN 7 x 57. Sam Cummings, after one of the European skirmishes, bought a good supply of surplus military rifles from the Swedish Government, sent them to Denmark where he had the barrels rechambered to 7 x 57. Then he sold them to "a South American Country"? and later purchased a few back from that country after it declared them surplus. Only a handful are known to exist. All numbers are matching, except the bolt sleeve and cocking piece. The gun is in surprisingly great shape in and out and is very rare.
